"Makes Michel Houellebecq seem like Enid Blyton."-Matt ThorneNelson used to be a radical journalist, but now he works for Monad, one of the world's leading corporations. Monad makes the Red Men-tireless, intelligent, creative, and entirely virtual corporate workers-and it's looking to expand the program.Nelson finds himself at the helm of a grand project whose goals appear increasingly authoritarian and potentially catastrophic. As the boundaries between Redtown and the real world become ever more brittle, Nelson finds himself forced to choose sides: the corporation or the community, the real or the virtual.

My memoir Self & I: A Memoir of Literary Ambition (Eye Books, 2018) was widely acclaimed, described as "a compelling reminiscence" by the Times Literary Supplement, "a moving and amusing memoir" Financial Times, and "an erudite yet hilarious account" by The Observer.

My science fiction novel IF THEN was published by Angry Robot in the UK and US in September 2015. It was followed by The Destructives in March 2016.

My first novel The Red Men was short-listed for the Arthur C Clarke Award and is currently being adapted for cinema by Shynola and Warp Films. Dr Easy, a short film adapted from the first chapter of The Red Men, can be watched free on Vimeo.

My second book The Art of Camping: The History and Practice of Sleeping Under the Stars interwove history and memoir to explore why we camp. It was one of The Economist Books of the Year.

Red Men was an awesome read, both as a sci-fi and as a literary experience. The story is a fascinating mix of corporate culture, pop-occult, themes of artificial consciousness and virtual worlds, Philip K. Dickian reality bending and interesting milieus and characterizations. The Kindle version of the book has some 13 000 words trimmed out, and apparently the more elaborate literary flourishes got the boot, which makes the text flow while feeling still rich and evocative. I picked up Red Men with no preconceptions of any kind and put it down somewhat stunned. Damn. As a writer, this is one of the books I wish I would've written.

Decently well written and with believable characters, but this is not much of a contribution to the conversation about AI. In this book, general AI - as an emulation of a living individual - exists but it's presented as though nobody ever thought about the implications of this. The book is about thinking through those emulations, but it just grates on me that their world is so unrealistic as to have the technology to create such a thing but absolutely no thought put into the implications until they've been around for years. It also presented a bleak view of culture and people, although that might be because it's about the British.

I got halfway and decided it wasn't worth finishing.

Incredible author, great story. Some typos in the print, but totally worth it. Can't recommend Matthew De Abaitua enough

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing novel that more people should read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 4, 2013
On the surface this novel could be described as a post-cyberpunk tale, but it has a lot more depth than it first appears. The story is set in contemporary Britain, the only sci-fi trappings coming courtesy of the Monad corporation, who manage to churn out robots, computers the size of sheets of paper and the titular Red Men (Digital avatars of the wealthy and powerful.) The impact of Monad on society is viewed from two perspectives, Raymond, a bohemian poet brought in to help stimulate the Red Men, and Nelson his long-time friend and one of the men responsible for creating the Red Men.

The novel is full of little twists and populated with rich, believable characters. De Abaitua's writing is also a joy to read, managing to be crudely descriptive and surprisingly poetic at turns. The author even manages to use the story to delve into a variety of subjects, including occultism, social movements, and small town communities.

At its heart The Red Men is a novel about change vs constancy. Can a man change without losing something that is fundamentally him? Can a man who stays the same truly be said to be living? A fantastic novel that I would recommend wholeheartedly to pretty much anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem

I really can't add much to the comments already made by other reviewers, except to add my voice to those who enjoyed this extraordinary novel. Anyone who has enjoyed Margaret Atwood, Christopher Priest, JG Ballard, Michel Houllebecq, Rupert Thompson or Michel Faber should enjoy this highly intelligent but very readable piece of speculative fiction. It took me a while to get into the book and get to grips with De Abaitua's vision, but once I was fully immersed in the world of Monad,it was hard to stop reading.

I find it difficult to understand why this clever, witty and thoroughly gripping read isn't more well known.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Some chapters, and the storyline were very good. I think a re-write with a good editor would push it into the 4/5 star region.
