4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,505 ratings

I lost my mentor, my K9 partner, and damn near my will to live. But when a ruthless killer targets a woman on the run, I'll do whatever it takes to save her.

Still grieving over too many losses in my life, I've got no room for more distractions. But though my instincts scream to keep my distance from Jules Jackson, I can't seem to stay away. It doesn't help that my new K9 companion has fallen head over paws for Jules's rambunctious family.

Or that when I'm with her, I finally feel peace.

In the heart of the beautifully rugged Colorado Rockies, Jules offers me a safe place to land, and to heal. With her warmth and compassion, it's no mystery why my K9 can't live without her either. But neither of us were prepared for the dangerous threat lurking so close to home…

And this time, there's no escape.

Review

The narration was great! I loved the different voices and accents. . . . [Callie Beaulieu] really brought these characters to life. She was clear and easy to understand, yet infused the emotional tenor.-- "The Book Nympho"

"Ruggle's latest romantic suspense series is sure to be a treat for current fans and new ones alike...A great series opener and will find fans with readers who enjoy brooding cops and heroines that challenge them."

I pre order all of Katie Ruggle's books, they are written well and a great balance of romance and suspense. This book is yet another awesome storyline. Jules and her siblings are on the run from an abusive parent. Jules is the adult in the sibling group and also step sister to her 4 sibs. Having been put in a situation, Jules has no recourse except to run. She has help to assume new identities for her family and they relocate to a small town in Colorado. There she meets Theo a member of the police K-9 unit and he is currently grieving the loss of his mentor in a tragic situation and the loss of his K9 partner the previous year. So he is broken and trying to find his way through all the heartbreak, and Ms. Ruggles does a wonderful job writing about Theo's emotional struggles as he is grieving. He was also partnered with Viggy his mentors K9 partner but there are issues between dog and man because they are both missing their partner/mentor. Jules works as waitress where the K9 officers frequent and an attraction develops between Jules and Theo. I love them together, I love Viggy and the kids together, I love Theo and the kids. Jules and family help heal Theo and Viggy and Theo and Viggy are there for Jules when something awful happens. Another knock out of the park for Ms. Ruggles. Thank you!

This was a really good story and beginning of the series. If you've read Ruggle's "Search & Rescue" series, then you wont be surprised to find that while the romance ends happily at the end of this story, there appears to be an overlying series storyline that probably wont be completed until all the books are complete (although I can't say positively).

Also, the story actually ends at page 351/408 (the 74% park on my Kindle). After that, there's some deleted scenes from Run to Ground that are interesting (until 377/408 aka 80% mark) and then we get the first 7 chapters of book #2, [book:On the Chase|34006761].

Jules is the new waitress at the diner in Monroe, CO. Jules moved to the town with her 4 younger siblings, 3 brothers and a sister. Jules used to be a CPA but she had to leave that all behind when she broke some laws in order to rescue her siblings and keep them out of the hands of a terrible woman. Jules' main goal is just to keep her family safe and make enough money coming in to keep them afloat.

Theo is a K9 cop that works in the town of Monroe, CO. He lost his K9 companion a year ago to cancer and then his (human) partner killed himself 2 months ago. Theo is feeling a lot of guilt over not noticing his partner's depression before his suicide and is having trouble recovering from the lose of 2 individuals that meant so much to him. His partner's dog, Viggy, is supposed to be Thoe's new K9 partner but Viggy isn't handling things any better than Theo.

Theo and the other 2 K9 cops normally have breakfast in the diner every morning before their shift. They all notice Jules on her first day but Theo takes particular notice and realizes that she's nervous and probably is hiding something. It doesn't help things when he tries to talk to her to find out more about her but it turns out more like an interrogation than anything else. Theo's still broken (emotionally) and doesn't feel much in the way of emotions so the interest he feels in Jules is a surprise and prompts him to continue to think about her. Jules is freaked to have gained Theo's notice and she's not that great of a liar so she's hoping she can put Theo off and maybe he'll lose interest.

Theo's interest doesn't wain though, especially when Viggy comes out of his shell for Jules' siblings (particularly her younger sister, Dee). Theo sees this as a good thing and the more interaction they both have with Jules' family, the better they both do...Viggy not only responding well to the kids but also to Theo's improving attitude. There are a few instances of trouble though and when Jules is in danger, Theo is there to save her and her siblings. Jules tries not to fall for Theo but he's a really good guy and the more time she spends with him, the more she does fall for him. Theo knows that Jules is hiding something but he also realizes she's a good person and what she's hiding from is to keep her family safe so he doesn't push. There is another issue that comes up and is resolved by the end of this story and in the end, Jules and Theo are pretty firmly together (HFN verging into HEAerish?), even if Theo doesn't know everything.

This was a very enjoyable story. I really liked Jules and felt for her and what she had to do to keep her family safe. Theo was kind of grumpy at first but he was a good guy once he got pulled out of his (understandable) funk. The story wasn't perfect but it was very good and kept me engaged until the end...even if I wish some things hadn't been left unresolved I'd still recommend this story. :)

I love this book! It has mystery, romance, humor, a wonderful storyline. Jules is amazing, and she does everything she can to keep her younger brothers and sister safe and happy. Theo is a cop, and after his partner committed suicide he has become gruff and despondent and blames himself for not noticing how depressed his partner had become. When Jules and Theo meet...they are so right for each other! I love these two so much and cheered them on and wished forever for them. And the kids...WOW! These four kids are so cool, so sweet, so wonderful and so much fun. Even with everything they went through, they adapted and trusted Jules to keep them safe. I am so glad I read this book. I have ordered the next one and pre-ordered the third. The characters are wonderful.

Theo was never charming but after losing his mentor and trying to reconnect with his K9 partner - he is considerably less so. The last person a woman on the run should fall for is a cop - so when Jules can’t stop thinking about or kissing Theo - she is in serious trouble.

I have read a few Katie Ruggle books and enjoyed them. Her stories are always a little romance and quite a bit of adventure. I had glanced at this one a few times while seeing what else was by her and finally picked it up for the Emergency Services roll on Romanceopoloy.

Theo is a classic dark and brooding hero with the social skills of a wet cat and Jules is a warm and fuzzy heroine who is tougher than she looks. They have some serious personal issues (trigger warning for references to abuse in Jules’ case and references to depression and suicide in Theo’s) and some serious action issues (trigger warning for gunplay and bombs on the page) but the heart of this book is an inherently sweet romance. It is not instantaneous love and at times awkward and cute and very kind.

My major hang up - without spoilers - is that I am just not sure I buy the end? It seemed to wrap up really fast and without a ton of resolution to Jules’ storyline. This one was definitely the steamiest of the ones I have read by her - still pretty much like a 6/10 I would say? Overall, I enjoyed it though and if you are looking for others by her I have read a few and have written up my favorite which was Gone Too Deep. Sidenote: my criticism that I didn’t get enough of hero’s side of the story and that does not apply to Run to Ground.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can he make up the rules as he goes along….just this once?

Explosive from the start, the first sentence hooks you and from there Katie’s cast quickly reel you in. Each character is perfectly described and draws an instant gut reaction, they make you shudder, growl, melt, frown and laugh out loud, how can you not enjoy it?
I have read the series before this ‘Search and Rescue Team’ and enjoyed it – I would say all books are worth 4 stars but there is just something about this series that gives that little bit more.
Jules is amazing, she is terrified, completely out of her depth, but is everything her siblings need and more. The fact that she has put her life on hold, risked her freedom, left everything she knows to try and give Sam, Ty, Tio and Dee a better, safer life melts your heart and has you praying for her every step of the way. Theo is the biggest challenge Jules faces, not only is he big, surly and nosey, he also makes her heart race and she cannot afford to be distracted….no matter how gorgeous he or his dog are!
Theo has had a very rough year and the last thing he needs is a ‘squirrely waitress’ in his town, bringing trouble and disrupting his peace……he is exhausted, grumpy, rude, angry and very, very intrigued by Jules – even when he tries not to be. Although he is surly and gruff there is something about Theo that pulls you in, but the more we get to know him and see the way he cares for Viggy, the more we see peeps of a softer Theo. This is the Theo that steals your heart, small pieces at a time and this is the Theo that Jules cannot resist. But being with Jules means he has to let go, not dig into her past and trust her completely, even if he doesn’t have all the facts. Can he do it? Can he let go of his need for control and trust Jules, Sam, Ty, Tio and Dee with his heart?
I loved this book and have just read this and the rest of the series for a second time before reading the new forth book in the series when it was released. Whilst each of the books is a stand alone story it is helpful to read them in order as there is a background plot running through all four books, with the final ‘showdown’ in book four pulling all the pieces from the previous three books together – a great read.
This bonus at the end of this book is a number of scenes that were cut from the main book during editing but the author has included them as a ‘little bonus’, a fun little extra.

Wow talk about an action packed small town I have to say I love that Steve has moved to this small town I was disappointed at the end of the search and rescue series that he didn't get a happy ending I'm looking forward to more of him.

Jules is just gorgeous and such an awesome character what she did for her siblings was just pure love these kids have been through so much I'm so happy they found a safe haven.

Theo is not as broken as he thought, finding the right woman then nearly losing her was the smack in the head he needed lol and Jules, Sam, Tio, Ty and Dee are exactly what Theo and Viggi need they all just fit together.
