This book was recommended by homeschool curriculum we're using. Almost didn't buy it because who can't find a recipe for bread pudding on the web? There's historical info in this about recipes in colonial times and then an updated recipe to make. Colonial recipes are written as they would have been written in that time...fun to read that. Plus other info about food during the colonial period. Makes me appreciate the ease of opening the fridge to find the milk and eggs, of having flour and baking soda and salt available. Frankly a few of the dishes make me cringe - not an oyster fan. But good fun making the recipes. Up next pea soup which I'm sure will make my high schooler gag! lol

Bought this as a Christmas gift, and it was a huge hit.
It's full of old, traditional recipes, nifty historical tid bits, and interesting information on the evolution of cooking. One of the most helpful features is the book listing modern day substitutions for ingredients that aren't as plentiful as they once were.
The book is a paperback, but the cover is made of a thick high quality material. The book itself is a slightly odd shape, so it doesn't quite fit on my shelf with my other cookbooks how I would like.
It's full of old, traditional recipes, nifty historical tid bits, and interesting information on the evolution of cooking. One of the most helpful features is the book listing modern day substitutions for ingredients that aren't as plentiful as they once were.

Interesting history, would like more recipes

This book has a brief history of Hamilton's life and times as well as a timeline of cooking developments throughout his lifetime. It also contains info on how cooking was accomplished in this era which was very interesting especially to a history buff like myself. However, I would have liked more recipes. There are really only a handful and only a few that sounded appetizing to me. I like that the author also provided copies of the original recipes. They were sometimes hard to read but give you the option of doing it the old way should you like to try. Interesting how the old recipes are very inexact when it comes to ingredient amounts or steps - almost as though they assumed all readers knew how to cook (because you had to back then given the absence of restaurants?) and they just had a few tasty ideas to add. :) I would be interested in more historic cookbooks and to be able to cook meals that were exactly as they ate historically. Quite enlightening!

Much more than a book of recipes!

I love this cookbook which is much more than a book of recipes! Author Laura Kumin has used her outstanding research skills to study the culture of Hamilton's time and what his contemporaries ate and how they dined. And living in Washington, DC, Laura had access to the Library of Congress and was able to visit the Library and look at original material. Laura is an excellent writer with an eye for what is interesting and significant. I love having the original recipe alongside her contemporary ones. I've made the gingerbread cake, chocolate puffs and bread pudding and they are all easy to make and delicious. I served them at a party I gave and they were big hits.

The combination of cooking and history in an easy to read book

As a student of history and an occasional chef, I enjoyed the book. It capsulized the long history of Hamilton in a light format that was the right approach to the man and his food. The recipes are easy to follow and so far those that I have tried are delicious. Read and enjoy!
