Tom Hanks plays the beaten down cog in a corporate machine, once a heroic fireman, now just another hope bereft worker with an idiot boss. Told he has 6 months to live and an opportunity to live those last few months like a king all for the small price of throwing himself into a volcano to appease some natives and their volcano god.
Along the way to his destiny, he rediscovers the fearless hero he once was and some good people who are sometimes, just as lost as he is. He realizes he has fritted away his life but is determined to carry out the bargain he made while just at the last moment he realizes he has found love.
It's a silly romp that asks some big questions and has a, silly, hopeful ending.
I think it does get a bit corny with Abe Vigoda and all, but it's certainly a movie worth seeing.
It's "different".
I have to say, though, that I've never met or heard of anyone who 'gets' Joe (i.e. knows what it's about, sees the symbolic nature of the people and events, knows it is talking about the deep issues of life) and hates it. All those whom I've met who don't like it also don't get it. They think it's a comedy, a love story, a 'light-hearted' film; all the things it's not. 'Joe' is everything that Ingmar Bergman ever wanted to say, but failed to say because he didn't know how to.
JVTV is about, to quote Joe, courage. The courage to face life, to face down the fear that prevents you from being the person you know in your heart you are. It's about facing life with what life requires to be happy and fulfilled.
When Joe was young he had the courage he needed. He was a firefighter. He ran into fires to rescue children and save people from the most painful death. Then he lost his courage and got a job selling "rectal probes". He always felt sick, seeing doctor after doctor until one told him the bad news: he was dying.
Joe accepted the diagnosis, and this set him free from his fear. The worst had happened, nothing more to be scared of. He's going to die soon. His last task is to live well for the short time that remains. He is offered a few days of unlimited wealth and freedom if he agrees to leap into a volcano afterwards in order to help a businessman clinch a contract with superstitious natives. Joe accepts.
Through a series of mishaps, Joe discovers what life is and what it requires. One memorable scene is when he is cast adrift on a raft, and, almost dead from exposure, watches a glorious Moon rise over the ocean. He's says, "Thank you God, I've forgotten how BIG...." when he collapses.
When, finally he is standing on the lip of the volcano, ready to leap, the woman he has fallen in love with says:
"Joe, nobody knows anything. We'll take this leap and we'll see. We'll jump and we'll see. That's life."
This is the message of the movie. Nobody knows the future. Nobody knows what will happen. There is always risk. The only thing we can do is have courage, and leap. Those who don't leap are forever on the sidelines, watching those who have chosen to live. In essence, the message of Joe is: To leap is to live.
I haven't spoiled the movie. There are many many parts that contribute and support the message. At one point Joe says, "I've come a long way on a crooked road to find you." The "crooked road" is a lighting-bolt like symbol that occurs frequently in the film. Watching for it is fun. Why are there ducks everywhere? Why is Joe always losing his hat? Why is Meg Ryan playing 3 characters (hint Joe is always telling the new Meg Ryan character: "I think I've seen you before."). Why doesn't Joe sleep? Why is Patricia 'soul sick'?
There are so many things happening on so many levels it's hard to keep up.
This is a movie for people who want to participate in the art experience. That's the difference between art and entertainment. Art requires the audience to think, to see, to participate. Entertainment just need someone to watch and react: "laugh at this, laught at that."
Joe vs the Volcano is for the elite of movie watchers. Sorry, but it's true.
In this Odyssey, Joe Banks, the movie's main character, realizes he has to change his life after finding out he has a "brain cloud." Visited by Samuel Graynamore, played by the wonderful Lloyd Bridges, he is given a chance to "live like a king and die like a hero" if he will agree to jump into a volcano on a Polynesian Island. Thus begins a fairy tale journey to the "Big Woo." His crooked road there leads him to a new understanding of life, a new appreciation of the world, true love, and the importance of one's soul. Joe learns that in life you must choose between being asleep or awake. As Patricia (Meg Ryan) says in the movie:
"My father says almost the whole world's asleep.
Everybody you know, everybody you see, everybody you talk to.
He says only a few people are awake.
And they live in a state of constant, total amazement."
"Joe Versus the Volcano" teaches that you can go through this world alive and yet not be alive. Like Joe, you can be dead and walking around. But it also teaches that you can change all of that if you really want to. All you need to do is have a little faith and the courage to take some risks. To quote Patricia again:
"Nobody knows anything, Joe.
We'll take this leap, and we'll see.
We'll jump, and we'll see.
That's life, right?"
Many thanks to John Patrick Shanley, who wrote, directed, and infused this charming film with a rich tapestry of recurring symbols. Here are a few to look for when you watch JVTV: nautical symbols, the volcano, ducks, the rose, the big dog, Joe's hats, the zigzag, closed and open hands, the moon, and many others. Although silly at times, at heart, this lovely movie is showing us how we can live our lives well. I "tip my hat" to Mr. Shanley. "May you live to be a thousand years old, sir."
I also want to thank the production crew and the wonderful actors who worked so hard to make JVTV special. Meg Ryan, who plays three different characters, gives her best performance in this "little" movie - what a marvelous job of acting. Tom Hanks is the perfect Joe Banks and the supporting actors are superb: Ossie Davis, who plays Marshall; Barry McGovern, who plays the luggage salesman; Lloyd Bridges, who plays Samuel Graynamore; Abe Vigoda, who plays the Waponi Chief; Dan Hedaya, who plays Frank Waturi, Carol Kane, who plays Cassandra, the hair dresser, and many others - thanks for such a wonderful film. I would also be remiss if I didn't tender a special thanks to the late Georges Delerue for his hauntingly beautiful original music score. "Marooned Without You" will always be one of my favorite songs.
This movie is like no other, and you can go to it again and again to lift your spirits and renew your soul. It will whisper its beguiling sea-song to you, if you listen.
So, let Joe, Patricia, and the gang show you how to leap into that volcano and enjoy this most lovely of movies.
Good luck, and have a great "journey."

Très content de cet achat. 😉
Joe is plucked from a meanlingless life, into an adventure whose final chapter must mean the end of his life. He has one month to live like he has never lived. And he does.
Who else would ever have the excuse and need to purchase luggage like that!
I believe this film is really for a select group of people who want to live the key line "My father says almost the whole world's asleep. Everybody you know, everybody you see, everybody you talk to. He says only a few people are awake. And they live in a state of constant, total amazement."
Its for people who don't need any sort of drug to feel high. For people who just need an occasional reminder on what life's priorities really are.
