I didn't expect a strong wind -- it doesn't provide one. I didn't expect the flexible stem to be too great -- it isn't.
I DID expect it to be quiet, and it absolutely IS. In fact, it's noiseless, completely, so it exceeded my expectations there!
I DID expect it to work on any power source, namely portable battery/charging devices that can charge USB items, and it DOES. Only drawback there is it seems to be backwards somehow on such devices, meaning, how a battery charger would seem to have a "front" to it, like where a power level indicator display or power button is found, for example, the direction of air flow is opposite to that -- not really a problem, except on chargers where having to put the charger face down, the wrong way, means it doesn't sit flat. I've solved that by standing such chargers vertically, so a flat side can be found, to be used, and, instead of bending the stem of the fan (which is fairly loose anyway) I then just keep the fan standing straight. It is very stable, and doesn't blow hard enough to knock itself over.
Uses? Well, now that summer is here, I actually am using it, at times, as an added cooling aid for my laptop, but it also does push enough of a small volume of air that it can be felt a few feet away, so, like in my office, since my air con is across the room, it helps circulate cool air toward me while I'm working, and I really like that it does so in absolute silence, and I like that, using a charging device as a power source, I can put it where I want.
I've hit my hand a few times on the exposed blades, and it's always a shock, of course, just the reaction. It doesn't hurt or even sting, at all, but it's just the unexpectedness of it, so I've learned to place it out of the way when using it, to avoid that self-created annoyance.
I really like that it can connect to a portable power source -- I have a few back up chargers that I really rarely use, and it's actually good to be able to use them for something now, and the power drain is very slight, meaning the fan will run for hours and hours, and I don't have to take up a needed USB port on my laptop or data hub, plus, as mentioned earlier, I can put the fan wherever I want it.
The flexible stem will hold somewhat of flex, if you get it just right, so, as I say, I was able to use it to help cool my laptop, using a flat charger I have and bending the stem upwards to just over a 90 degree angle, to aim the airflow at the computer. Worked great.
Right now I am using it at my desk, on this hot day, just to help move air around and cool me down somewhat.
I was going to get the one with the data hub, but it was sold out, and this one was less money anyway, and I'm glad I got this one, since it is so portable, in use with a charger. It's a go anywhere fan, and, while it doesn't blast a huge breeze, it is a noticeable air flow that is pleasant, so, like I say in my title, it's not a windstorm, but it is what it is, and is exactly as described.
So, if you're looking for a small air circulation/cooling fan, that is noiseless and totally portable through the use of a charging device, this is definitely the fan you want! Compared to units that are desktop/USB plug in fans, that run more like twenty or even thirty bucks, this one, for eight dollars, performs just as well, and has the added benefits of no noise and extreme portability.
All in all, knowing what to expect, and not thinking it should be something it's not, I have zero complaints and am very pleased with this purchase, a very low cost fan I can have anywhere, so it sure gets five stars from me!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
The fan itself is small enough not to take too much space. The gooseneck felt sturdy, I felt the friction of the gooseneck every bend I made. The gooseneck can hold the weight of the fan head in different position. If you pick up the gooseneck, it will not bend itself with the base. It will stay where the position is. The fan itself look like a computer case fan without the griddle and the protection shroud. As other reviewers stated, my finger will not be injured if I accidently touch it. The variable fan speed knob is a great way to control the amount of airflow. One interesting thing about this fan is that I felt chilly effect from this fan than another desk fan. I am not sure if it is a placebo, but I do feel being chilly as the fan blew directly at me. Sometimes, I would decrease the fan speed because it become too chilly for me. That is one of the positive features of it.
One of the positive features is the noise, it is barely audible. You know when you turn on the fan, you can hear the air moving around, this is common for air circulation devices. But with this fan, I couldn’t hear the airflow. All I can hear is a small whirring noise from the motor. Again, it is barely audible. Also, it has a good heavy base to prevent tripping over. The base itself is mainly metal with plastic covering the top, it is padded with foam to prevent vibration on the desk. I couldn’t feel the vibration on my desk.
This device is powered through USB. We are moving into the era where USB become common for using as power source. I have a few devices myself that is running from USB which make it great for portability. I can use my power bank to power it, or my laptop. Unfortunately, this fan does not include USB wall outlet/charger. Lucky for me, I have a wall surge protector (APC brand) that have two USB outlet. If you do not have it and you found yourself having devices that use USB as power, I recommend you invest in a new surge protector with USB built in or get one of those more than two USB port wall charger. As right now, some laptop is making a transition to use USB as main power source. It would be wise for you to get one.
This USB Desktop fan won’t be a disappointment to you. I full on recommend this desk fan to you. The price is extremely reasonable. You get a long-lasting quality of the product.
Hopefully, I will report back to this review after a year to give update. Hope I remember….
It's virtually silent too. At least compared to an old USB fan a friend got me a few years back. It looks something like this New USB Mobile Port Mini Fan For PC Mac Laptop Notebook and generates more noise than wind. The Arctic fan is virtually inaudible in comparison. (It still emits noise, but it's low...and often overshadowed by the sound of the laptop's cooling fan) .
I've also tried it with my mobile charger ( Anker® Astro 5600mAh Backup External Battery Pack and Charger with built-in Flashlight ) and it works just fine. It barely uses any power. I don't have numbers, but the charger was displaying 3 full bars (out of 4) when I plugged the fan. Left it for 8+ hours overnight. When I woke up, charger was still showing 3 bars.
The blades are made from plastic. Don't worry about accidentally hurting yourself while the fan is running, While you're probably bound to touch the blades while it's running, the fan immediately stops rotating, and you won't feel a thing.
Only drawback I can think of is the short gooseneck. It is sturdy though and it will hold the shape you bend it to. But a slightly longer gooseneck would give more flexibility.
If you're looking for a small, inexpensive fan to keep you cool while on your laptop, or perhaps while you're out and about (used with any mobile charger with USB output), I do recommend this one. Arctic are known for their PC cooling fans, so they know what they're doing.
