Alvvays is due to release it's much-anticipated second full-length, Antisocialites, this September. Amazing Album Packaging
This is more a review of the actual vinyl than the album itself, because as we all know this is like a 9/10 album.Luckily the vinyl does this already amazing album justice. Some albums I order are really bland; you get the vinyl in the sleeve and that's about it. As you can see from my pic, this album comes printed in a clear vinyl which was a pleasant surprise. The sleeve artwork? Wow. You can tell it's printed from a hand-drawn design that has each song featured with it's own little doodle. It really adds even more personality to this wonderfully delicious album. On the reverse of the sleeve are the full album lyrics. Molly never seems to mumble her words and they're never buried under the music so lyrics aren't really needed, but they're there and it's nice. In short: an amazing album backed up by an amazing vinyl!

Hard pop band: Jangly, with a good rhythm section, keyboards and two guitars. The songs have an overwrought, romantic bent. The sound is a little grungy, with overdriven drums and guitars. What puts it over the top is the singer/songwriter is made of hooks! She pulls them out of her pocket and delivers them constantly. That’s what sets the record apart. Stand outs are “Undertow”, “Saved by a Waif”, “Not my Baby” and “Hey” for the superb arrangement. Imagine if they were recorded in a real studio...Nah, that would spoil it! The cream-colored record I got had a slight flaw, but the music’s so good I bought another copy from their website.

I bought this album after hearing the song Dreams Tonite. Like a female Morrissey, the lead singer has a plain style that carries plenty of emotion without showy vocal ornamentation. Most of the songs have a dreamy nostalgic mood with a couple of fast songs to break things up. Also, most of the songs are brisk with a decent hook that doesn't overstay or repeat too often. I am caught off guard each time the album ends because it's so short. Standout slow song is Dreams Tonite; standout fast song is Your Type.

What can we say? Their first album was brilliant. And this, their second album, is brilliant. It also shows signs of artistic development, for the vocal arrangements are more complex on this one - and it's delightful. Everything is good: the thoughtful, melodic songwriting; the clever arrangements full of unexpected-but-natural-sounding twists and turns; the charismatic performances all around; the creative production, full of interesting sounds that do not overwhelm the songs they serve... wow, it's good. Listen to it twice, and soon you will have these excellent recordings in your head for a while.
