Editorial Reviews
Black Country Communion are the rock super group comprised of vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Trapeze), drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin, Foreigner), Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Alice Cooper, Billy Idol) and blues-rock guitarist/vocalist Joe Bonamassa. This is their long awaited and highly anticipated fourth album, BCCIV. Their last album, Afterglow, has sold over 33K.

IV pretty much picks up where they left off with the Afterglow vibe, a nice mix of bluesy tunes (like their debut) and the more Zeppy tunes (like BCC2). Bonham once again turns in an excellent performance, much like he did on Afterglow. I think he seemed a bit more subdued and blended in on the debut and 2, but really came to the forefront with some splashy grooves and fills on Afterglow. Lyrically, most of the songs this time were written by Hughes, but Bonamassa’s contribution “The Last Song For My Resting Place” is brilliant – probably my favorite song here. Love the interplay between the mandolin and fiddle and the great lyrical tribute. “Over the Top” is another great song here, somewhat more catchy and melodic than the typical BCC output. But the rest is all good too with many moments of jaw-dropping solos from Bonamassa and Sherinian. Great to have these guys back in action.
I know, I know, some people had some gripes with "Afterglow", and while I could certainly understand some of those, I didn't really agree with most. That being said, I would say that this is a happier, snappier record, with superb playing and great songs.
I can't really pick a favorite, since the quality is really high, but gun to my head I'd say that "Last Song For My Resting Place", "The Cove", "Wanderlust" and "Love Remains" will be the ones that'll probably stick with you the fastest, pretty much upon a first listen, since they feature catchy choruses. And as I already mentioned, the whole band is in top shape here, Glenn putting all other singers half his age to shame, Bonamassa playing with great feel, Bonham crushing it on drums, and Sherinian adding a really cool, retro feel with his keys. And Kevin Shirley's production is big and fat, as usual.
Only complaint? It's much too short (only 10 songs! But that still amounts to one hour of music), and to add insult to injury, the vinyl edition features a bonus track!!!!
But other than that…. in a nutshell, if you're a BCC fan you just need to get this, and if you're looking for great, 70's rooted hard rock played by true geniuses, then look no further, this is the record you've been looking for, ENJOY!
When giving a critique of this band or their music, they are automatically at a disadvantage, because we expect 'better than really good.' They claim supergroup pedigree, so that's where I start from with them. That said, this disc is as good or better than anything else in the pure rock genre that I've heard this year. If you liked the other albums, you'll like this as well. One more opinion, the whole group is better than very good, but it's Hughes' vocals that separate this band from some others. The guy can flat out sing with a passion.

Black Country Communion was no exception. Comprised of Glenn Hughes ( Trapeze,Deep Purple,Black Sabbath ),Jason Bonham ( Bonzo's boy ),Derek Sherinian ( Dream Theater,Billy Idol ) & blues/rock guitarslinger Joe Bonamassa,BCC issued 3 decent studio albums before disbanding acrimoniously some years back.Happily, they've mended fences and released probably the best Classic Rock album of 2017.
It's pretty bombastic,of course ( Jason's a "basher",like his Dad ),but there are enough shafts of light and shade to keep the record from getting too repetitive and tedious.
I can't quote chapter and verse from the bible of Zep, but ,there is A LOT of Led on this record. You can't help but hear it,practically everywhere.Sway,Last Song For My Resting Place, the riffs of Love Remains & Awake.Even JP Jones' mellotron/flute line from the Stairway intro during When The Morning Comes.
Joe B has a lot more melody in his solos on this record, but he still likes his big, wide, bent, blues notes.
I like GH's distorted bass solo on The Crow.Much of his playing on BCCIV reminds me of Black Sabbath's Geezer Butler.
( In fact,The Cove could've easily fit on Sabbath's "13" Yes,even the vocal delivery could've been "OZZY-fied)
Sherinian is absent from 2/3rds of the proceedings, but, when he surfaces,it's with grand piano flourish and a genuine Hammond organ solo.
Glenn Hughes sings well, & cuts his tomcat wails to a minimum.
Some of the song outros could've been shortened as they are mainly chorus repeats and/or guitar fills.
Whether or not all the Led Zeppelin nods are coincidental or intentional, this is a finely crafted record and certainly BCC's best yet.
