Product Description
Riverdale: The Complete First Season (DVD) Based on the characters from Archie Comics, Riverdale gives a subversive take on small-town life. Things aren’t always what you expect in Riverdale. As a new school year begins, the town is reeling from the tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom. The summer’s events made all-American teen Archie Andrews realize that he wants to pursue a career in music, but his fractured friendship with Jughead Jones, and Josie McCoy’s focus on her own band leaves Archie without a mentor. Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper is not ready to reveal her true feelings for Archie, and new student, Veronica Lodge, has an undeniable spark with her crush. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom, Riverdale’s Queen Bee, who stirs up trouble amongst Archie, Betty and Veronica. But is Cheryl hiding something about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there’s more to the story.

It's like watching a Freaks and Geeks/Twin Peaks mashup. But it works well enough for me to keep watching to see what happens next, because it's really unpredictable and not quite like anything else on TV at the moment.
My only beef is they either need to stop making Archie be a whiny idiot who makes the worst possible choices ever OR they need to get rid of him. He does not fit in with any of the other of his friends. So much so I have to wonder why he's even there. He just blunders from situation to situation, but in a really irritating "Betty, Veronica, Jughead - you all seem like sharp, bright kids with a future. Why are you hanging around with this clown and what do you even see in him?" He just seems like a total fish out of water whether it's him looking blankly at Betty while she talks about her summer internship and getting to meet a literary idol or him deciding it's a great idea to burst into a baby shower to publicly announce another friend's less than stellar criminal family affiliations.
I didn't like the Archie in the comics either though, the guy was an idiot and I could never figure out why the girls fought over him to begin with. Ditto this series too and I hope the writers start to shape his character as being something other than a Justin Beiber wannabe who does exactly the wrong thing and can't see things like "Hey, that older female teacher with the false ID and gun in her car may not have your best interests at heart" or "What part of walking into a dive bar full of known criminals to accuse people wildly of something with no proof did you not get is a really bad idea." Not to mention rejecting Betty at the beginning of the series only to now show a mad face whenever he hears about her and Jughead together although the two of them have far, far more in common than he and Betty ever did. They are like the Scully and Mulder of Riverdale and a more perfect couple could not be found on that show!
And I guess what makes this show a success is it's made me care about what happens to these kids. Plus who in the heck DID kill Jason Blossom? That mystery alone has me tuning in.
It looks like the gang over at Warner Bros. are trying to step up their game, with devastatingly effective results. Time Warner should probably say screw it to the Big Screen and just focus on consolidating their enviable hold over the Small Screen. Just when I thought that television had lost its Mojo, then this little gem of a show comes along.
As an added bonus, the fictional town of Riverdale is set somewhere in British Columbia, Canada (I personally loved the panoramic vista shots). Overall, the actors chosen for the various roles are pretty good, but I tend to think that Veronica is portrayed a bit too much on the Goth side. Still, she's got edge- and a fair bit of cheek, and I like that. Betty is very believable as the attractive girl next door, struggling to break free of the grasp of her overly protective (and somewhat domineering) mother while at the same time desperately trying to attract the attention and win the favor of the boy next door. Archie, the protagonist and hero of the show, is a bit strained as the jock with natural athletic ability (and an Adonis-like body) who also happens to be a tortured, but promising young artist. Veronica's character is the true wild card- is she good, is she evil (or a bit of both). I'm thinking that the writers and producers of this show tried not so subtly to create her in the mold of Lex Luthor- the similarities are too many to be 'purely coincidental'.
I can already envision how this delicious and twisted little tale is going to play out. Oh man, this is gonna be good!
First of all, I never read an Archie comic growing up or really ever had the desire to. Archie was and always is a very popular pop culture icon so I had always had the image of Archie and his pals but didn't know anything about them beyond what they looked like.
That being said, I decided to order this show, an Archie art coffee table book, and a couple of the trade paperbacks for the most recent runs of the series due to Archie always being named as an important influence by alternative cartoonists I love and admire.
Wow! I found myself saying that many times while watching this series. I was expecting a bright Saved By the Bell-esque show based on what the comics look like (even the modern runs). That I did not get, but what I did was something way more up my alley in terms of personal taste. This show is like a combination of old film noir/David Lynch (specifically Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks)/John Waters campyness and overall meloDRAMA!
Although Riverdale takes place on planet Earth and in the USA this show is pure fantasy. Each episode is so outrageous with the things/events that seem to happen, but I this is definitely why I enjoy it so much. Also, the soundtrack and score is just fantastic.
I kinda feel bad for fans who might have been looking for a more faithful adaptation, but that definitely wouldn't have been a show I'd been interested in.
*Slight Spoiler*
The character of Jughead is an openly out "asexual" in the current run in the comics but not in this show. I was disappointed by that because asexual representation in media is almost non-existent. That uniqueness would've added to the greatness of this series.
