Recommended 'Shark Week' Reading

Ah some perfect reads before Shark Week starts on Sunday. Looks like Shark Week might be more like Shark Month for me. Thank you for this!

shark books might be fun to read one season but not right now

When the book, 'Meg' came out, I also read a book called 'Extinct' which was about a megalondon. It was suppose to be a mini series on NBC but never made it. the book wasn't too bad.

I think maybe this one is it? Extinct

A great b-movie style shark novel is North Sea Hunters. If you like a good aquatic man vs. monster story you could do worse. I read it last month and really enjoyed it. Check it out.

I also loved Jaws and Meg so I may have a thing for shark books...

Jaws, Meg, Bait

Sharks kill maybe 12 people a year.
Humans slaughter 11,417 sharks per HOUR.
Pretty obvious who the real monsters are.
We're facing fishless oceans in just 31 years and when the oceans die, we will. And it will serve us right

So pleased there are at least a few of us that see the bigger picture. When I look at how many animals have already become extinct at our hands and how many more are on the brink I don't see man ever learning.

On the contrary, I find books on sharks fascinating. Books are much more genuine way of getting information, even in fiction books, where as fictional movies are much more about fake gore and thrills. A good shark book can never be beaten.

I'm afraid to go in the water because it's infested with humans. How many sharks accidently kill humans compared to the murder of sharks by humans? About 1 to 100 million.

I read Jaws by Peter Benchley on its UK publication back in 1974,
It was one of the most exciting reads of that year and I remember thinking what a great film it could make!
Of course todays reader will not have the pleasure of near ignorance of the Great White shark that we in the UK had back then and so the shock of this novel ( The first in this Genre that was aimed at a mass market) will have dissipated.
Now of course there is the film Jaws that nearly everybody will have seen, this film has had the unintended consequence of bringing the Great White Shark nearer to extinction through unfounded fear.
Now we have the disgusting trade in shark fins where the fins are cut from live sharks and then the shark pushed back into the ocean.
We are all disgusted and shocked by this but there is still a ready market for the fins in China and across that part of the world.
Peter Benchley and Steven Spielberg where both shocked and mortified by these unforeseeable future events.
But Jaws is still a great read!!

Peter Benchley is the man when it comes to shark and other sea animal stories. In addition to Jaws, I recommend Peter Benchley's Creature, Beast, and The Girl of the Sea of Cortez and and his nonfiction work Shark Trouble.

Other good undersea sort of related stories
The Deep, Peter Benchley. The Abyss, Orson Scott Card.

Smart about Sharks is another great shark book for young readers. :) (Nonfiction.)
