“How a Movie Fan Turned a Love for Movies into a ‘Reel’ Business”

There are probably many who still wonder, “Who is VCI?” and sometimes I wonder the same thing. Fortunately for you, I might be able to shed a little light on that subject, because I’ve been here since the inception of the company.

Once upon a time… or so the story goes… there was a young man who loved movies. His name was Bill Blair. Bill grew up in a small Oklahoma farming and ranching town; far, far away from the Hollywood glitz and glamour. He loved movies so much, he saved his money until one day he was able to buy a film projector. On many warm summer nights, he would set that ‘magic lantern’ up in an open tent and project movies on a big white bed-sheet to anyone who could afford his 2 bits admission charge; however, more often than not, he let people in for free.

Some years later Bill got married and moved to the big city of Tulsa and started a family. (That was when I and the other little Blairs came in the picture, but more about that later.) His love of movies continued and he began collecting old prints of some of his favorite films as a hobby. Before too long he had accumulated a sizable film collection. You know how one thing can lead to another, and that’s exactly what happened here. He started a movie rental business out of the house. That part-time business grew so quickly that it soon became a ‘reel’ business, and United Films was born.

Sometime around 1975 the Betamax Video Cassette Recorder was introduced, launching the world of “home video entertainment”. Bill Blair had already been experimenting with broadcast and commercial video long before the Sony Betamax arrived on the scene, and he immediately fell in love with this new “home video” medium, realizing the significance it would play in the distribution of movies.

He felt this was such an important development that he created a separate company, Video Communications, Inc. (VCI) in 1976 to produce and distribute movies and special programming on video tape.

Did I mention that Bill Blair loved movies… all kinds of movies? He was particularly fond of ‘classic’ movies; you know the type, the kind Hollywood doesn’t make anymore. I believe that VCI was created (as was United Films) in part, because the business gave him a legitimate excuse to expand his movie collection; he was a movie buff/collector first and businessman second. Well he passed the movie/buff gene on to the whole Blair family, who in their own right, are all true movie mongrels too. Now with his three sons and only daughter at the helm, along with the many employees who are “like” family and even some of his children’s children now working at VCI, it is truly a ‘family affair’.

Bill Blair sadly passed away in 2006, but his memory and his love of movies live on at VCI. We wholeheartedly continue the tradition he began almost 50 years ago: of finding, preserving and distributing classic (and sometimes eclectic) movies, spanning decades of film production and many popular genres, of the highest-quality reproductions we can procure.

"Audi Precas Meas, Satana. Blessed Be!"
4 Stars
"Audi Precas Meas, Satana. Blessed Be!"
A group of buxom, nubile, well-curved cheerleaders are off to a competing town to cheer at a rival football game, but when the vehicle driven by the charmingly naive Ms. Johnson breaks down along the way, Billy the janitor picks them up, but with his own personal agenda for some comeuppance in retaliation for their persistent teasing. Seems he made his own little deal with The Devil to possess 'Patti' - but little did he know that she is actually the "chosen one", which is the only reason there was an issue. Unfortunately, despite his desperation, he is struck down for his trouble at the very Tabernacle of Satan.Satan here is represented as a mighty fearsome Lion* totenkopf upon a pillar overlooking a stone slab, while the cultists wear The Pentacle of The Evil Eye, as well as prominently demonstrated in Emma's private Ritual Chamber. Turns out Sheriff "B.L. Bubb" was merely pretending as presiding High Priest, which earns him an impalement by the apparently resurrected zombie janitor. The red-robed Officiant leading the black robed congregants through the wilderness is reminiscent of The Devil's Rain, while one of them was being tolerated in the group being a hellariously salacious former monk with a persistent bad habit of gesticulating the signum crucis, and is seemingly preoccupied with "guarding" the maidens, which the appropriately ferocious dobermans 'Lucifer' and 'Diablo' do quite well. They manage to escape both the house and the barn by the resourcefulness of Patti, "the smart one". The only town dweller not involved with the Cult is the local hobo played by John Carradine, considered too insane to be included, yet amidst brief instances of clarity, does seem to realize the goings-on, then quickly lapsing into another mad episode. It's Evil vs. Evil to witness with devilish delight, DeCarlo {Lily Munster} at The Altar of Satan uttering the Words of Power "Audi Precas Meas, Satana. Blessed Be!"** while attempting to kill Patti. She seems to be the only one that realizes the girl is a dangerous element and does what she can to avert The Devil's wrath. Her words echo across the Ether in diabolical magnificence. The cultists consider it fortunate happenstance that the girls are in town, and would make for ideal sacrifices for The Black Mass of ancient times, while a virginal maiden is selected for The Prince of Darkness Himself. It is quite unexpected exactly who it is, but due to the sheriff's liberties, compromises her condition, thus accused and combined with pretension, the cheerleader assumes the role as leader. The cheerleaders do finally make it to the game, and thus with Patti's realized Powers, win in abundance. ∞_____________* As in "...be on the alert. Your adversary, The Devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8.** Which translates to "Hear My Prayer, SATAN. Blessed Be." Shemhamforash! Hail Satan!

If you like "so bad they're good" movies, you should get a kick out of this. (You should also visit ManorOnMovies.com for many more recommendations of this type of movie.)

Keep an eye out for John Carradine and Yvonne "Lily Munster" DeCarlo!

I have no idea how many stars to give this movie. It had bad acting, a dumb plot, and a bizarre premise which was sort of 1970s-b-movie-cheerleader-sex-farce-comedy meets creepy-Satanic-cult-horror-b-movie and the result is astonishingly bad. I mean I've seen a lot of bad, stupid movies based on dumb ideas and this was one of the worst conceived ever. It hurt, but once it was over I decided it was a good hurt. Yeah, five stars is a little much. Er . . . a lot much, but go to Youtube or browse the net and you can find the trailer for this thing and get some feel for it yourself.

I saw this movie on late night TV when I was a kid and thought it was unintentionally funny. Now that I've finally found it on video and have been able to watch it again decades later as an adult I realise that it was intentionally funny. Also great commentary track for the film buffs out there.

Still better than any of the "Bring It On" movies...especially the direct-to-video ones. They should seriously consider doing a remake, smarten it up.

A silly, sexy 70's movie.
The Horror element is quite campy and I wonder if it was regarded the same in 1977.
It's great to see Yvonne DeCarlo (Lily Munster) play a Satanist who is afraid of a petite cheerleader.

Good campy movie. If you are up on your TV trivia, one of the cheerleaders is one of Blair's friends in an early Facts of Life episode. Name her for 10 points...

It's a fun flick with the Cheerleaders strutting their stuff 70's style until they're held captive by two Satan worshipers- John Ireland, Yvonne De Carlo ( and their cohorts) looking for a virgin to sacrifice. Question is, will they find one among this band of loosey goodies?
