This compass was well packed in small box wrapped in plastic and inside a larger box with other recently ordered items, and it delivered ahead of estimated delivery date. The finish of the compass is good. The included instruction booklet was fairly well written. Bearings taken with it were accurate when compared to other higher cost compasses I own.

But, I knew within 15 minutes after it was opened that I would return this compass. Mostly because the holding ring (aka thumb loop) was not only too small to insert my thumb into it. It is also to small to pivot, and fold underneath the compass into the depression on the bottom of the compass. And because it will not fold underneath, it blocks the top cover from fully opening and laying flat.

I had read reviews of other similar compasses (this same design seems to be sold under many different names at widely varying low prices, some lower in price an some higher than this one) where comments have been posted stating the holding ring was too small to fully insert their thumb and/or the thumb ring was to thick to allow the compass to set flat on a map when it was folded underneath with the top cover fully opened. iow it was too thick to fit into the depression in the bottom cover. And the thumb ring has to fold out of the way to allow the top cover to be fully opened. Installing a holding ring to small to fold underneath may have solved the problem of it being too thick, but it introduced another problem -- the top cover can not be fully opened. I took a chance that this fault had been fixed in newer production, it was not. It has been made worse. See pictures of the thumb ring, and the top cover opened as far as it will.

Additionally, I was also initially going to return it because the aiming line in the top cover can not be seen in the v-notch rear sight. It's just barely tall enough to see over the top of the compass housing and the aiming line was to high to be seen in the v-notch. But eventually I figured out on this compass the top cover has to be tilted forward, about 70 degrees past vertical, to see the aiming line and the distance measuring marks, on the horizontal line. In that position you can sight the target with the v-notch rear sight and the aiming line in the top cover, and also see and read the bearing/+ back bearing through the rear sight eye piece. In the end I was ok with feature after figuring out how it has to be used. But that isn't really mentioned in the instruction booklet.

A bearing or azimuth taken to a distant radio tower was within reasonable agreement (1.5 degrees) with my Silva model 15TDCL 360/6400 and Cammenga H3 lensatic compasses.

The bezel (360 degree dial) rotates too easily, making it easy to be bumped off the set bearing, it should be a little tighter. It does glow nice and bright in low light, the north pointing arrow is much dimmer. And there were no other luminous bars to help guide you in the correct direction in low light, iow no dot, (direction of travel) arrow luminous marks on the cover. (a closer reading of the description of this compass would have shown me there are no other luminous sight lines on this compass. Not a huge problem for me as I seldom use a compass in the dark, but it is a design flaw imo. ) Additionally the top cover is not held closed by any mechanical means. It can easily open if not wrapped with the lanyard, or other means to hold it closed.

This compass, I think, is intended to be a Chinese made version of the Kasper and Richter Meridian 381120 compass at one seventh the price of the K&R compass. I knew that before I ordered, and that's one reason why I ordered it. I would probably have kept it if the holding ring (thumb ring) was not a major problem. I think the small thumb ring is a production problem, not a design problem. The bottom cover shows it was designed to have a larger thumb ring installed. For $20 I would have tolerated the other short comings. This order was really just to see if I might like the K&R Meridian compass before laying out 7x more in payment. Or not need too if this compass worked well. Unfortunately, I am disappointed that it did not. The fault with the thumb ring was the deal breaker, with the not quite tight enough bezel ring being a second more minor fault.
