We will be using iit n our home that has very nice hardwood floors, so I had to figure out a way to use the pen without scratching the floors. We have an 8 week old German Shepherd that will grow very quickly and be able to push the pen across the floor causing damage.
Solution: I found some thick inexpensive laminate (12mm) at Lowes that is a similar color to our floors. It locks tight together and I needed 3 cases (the pen is roughly 45 sq ft with all panels) that cost me about $68. You can make it square or more rounded in shape so that it fits your needs. We chose a more elongated shape (see photos) to fit our space. It worked out to about 60" wide by about 86" long. In the garage I assembled the flooring in a square , alternating the lengths as you do when laying floors to ensure a tight solid fit. I then assembled the pen on top of the flooring and got the shape set up the way I wanted it. I marked the outline of the pen on the floor with a black Sharpie and removed the pen. I cut the floor to the shape of the pen. I secured the pen with metal shelf pins ($10), drilling holes and gluing them in place on either side of the bottom bar of the panels.
I disassembled the floor and reassembled it in our home on top of a cheap moving blanket (80" x 72") from Harbor Freight ($9). Once the floor was reassembled I cut the moving blanket about an inch shorter hen the outside diameter of the floor so the puppy would not chew it. I then assembled the pen on the floor inserting each panel into the shelf pins. Worked like a charm! The pen is solid and will not move! There are no sharp edges to trip over if I had left the floor square. There is double protection for our hardwoods with the laminate and moving pad layers. The laminate is super easy to clean and maintain. The whole floor system was less than $90 (less if you can find cheaper flooring). The reason I didn't glue this together is so that I could easy move it simply by taking it apart and reassembling elsewhere. Also with the moving blanket between the hardwood and laminate I can easily slide the whole thing intact elsewhere on our main living area. To put it outside simply disassemble the panels and pull then pop them out of the shelf pins.
Very happy with this purchase and our puppy loves it.

My mother recently got a puppy, and we needed to set up a pen in her shared courtyard. Because the space is visible to the neighbors and regulated by the community association, we "took a shot" on something a bit more expensive, which looked nice in the photo. After receiving it, all I can say is - the photo doesn't do it justice. For the extra $20 or $30 over the cost of a basic same-size pen, this comes in a finished and rounded metal which looks elegant (yes, I just used that word to describe a dog pen haha). Once set up in the yard, I can honestly say it *enhanced* the look of her yard (OK - so it's not a really nice yard.. but still... it looked better with the pen in it!)
Setup was a breeze. The pen comes with a bunch of panels (8x2 foot panels I think) and each has interlocking metal protrusions (sort of like hinges), higher on one side than the other. This means that it's very easy to see which way each panel fits with the one next to it. A long, thin metal stake latches each panel together (think of a 5 foot tall shish kabob skewer with a decorative hook on the end). You can drive the stake into soft ground (i.e. grass) or just let it settle on top of hard ground (i.e. concrete). Either way, the pen is quite secure. The stakes slide through the interlocking 'hinges' with no resistance - the whole setup takes 5 to 10 minutes moving at a comfortably lazy pace :p
There is a gate in the front of the pen with two crate-like latches, and the whole setup can be shifted and moved into a plethora of configurations - octagon, square, rectangle, or some wonky shape which only looks good to you :)
Bottom line: I love the pen (if you can't tell) and think it's well worth the $65-$70. (And this is coming from someone who was upset when the $0.99 menus went up to $1.29!)

Very easy to move so it can become smaller or bigger and change shape.
