The scanning feature is great! You can scan shapes in and cut them out. You can scan in your material on your cutting mat to make sure the cut is placed properly. I can use all my little scraps! I have been able to draw my own lettering and create cut files with them for iron ons and vinyl.
There are quite a few built in files to cut, so if I just need some plain letters cut, I don't have to open the computer.
I will say that the blade doesn't adjust automatically, you have to set the blade, and then set the speed and pressure on the machine, and these settings are not uniform from machine to machine. So you can't necessarily go by what others have used for settings. So you have to do test cuts. And I have heard of others cutting through their mats. Knock on wood, I haven't done that yet, but I keep an extra mat handy just in case.
Also a con, you have to buy the wireless "card" if you want to transmit your designs wirelessly, otherwise you have to use USB to transmit them.
There is a learning curve with the design software "Canvas". It is very different from Cricut's "Design Space". If you have used Inkscape or Illustrator or Silhouette Studio, you will have no problem. But there are lots of helpful videos on YouTube. Having said that, I feel I can do so much more with Canvas than with Design Space.
I mainly cut vinyl and cardstock and I've had no problems. I still need to test out some thicker materials.
It's sturdily constructed from hard plastic, with a thick high quality cord.
This machine is priced higher than the Cricut Explore (the Maker is more) and the Silhouette machines. I paid for my ScanNCut 2, so this review is purely my own opinions.
Overall, I am very happy with my ScanNCut. It has sparked my creativity, and I am having a lot of fun with it.
I have to say I LOVE THIS MACHINE. Bye Bye cricut. This machine does everything and SO easy to use. I watched a couple of videos before my purchase, so when I received the scan n cut, I took it out of the box and used it immediately. WOOOOHOOOO. I am a card maker and love making my own die cuts. This machine is PERfect for that use. I can scan in anything and cut it out. Seriously people, buy it! You will not be disappointed. I have had this for 4 days and I think I cut more things out with this machine than I did with my cricut in 2 years. The intricate detail in the cuts amazes me. I haven't used the scan n cut canvas site yet, but I will.
I plan on using this for other crafts too. Did I say this machine is awesome? Haha. It is. It's worth the money, in my opinion.

It is great! Once you learn how to use the software, it is excellent at optimizing the use of your vinyl by re-arranging patterns to waste as little space as possible. If you can hand-trace your vectors in Illustrator or Photoshop, it will create the cleanest lines. The scanner is great to preview where the vinyl is on the mat, so you can adjust where you're cutting. You can easily duplicate the patterns, scale them to any size, group the vectors so they're easier to position and move as a unit.
Only bad thing is that when you're zoomed into an area for fine-tuning positioning, you can't actually move the pattern, or at least I haven't found a way. You have to zoom back out then move it, then zoom in to see if it is where it should be.
The lines that are cut are very clean and crisp. I use a speed of 1, pressure 1, and depth of 1 for vinyl. If you use a high speed, the corners are not as clean.
Don't listen to the directions that come with vinyl sheets, or the manual. Instead, start with the slowest speed, least pressure, and shallowest depth and do test cuts until you find a suitable setting for the material you're cutting. I used the settings in the manual which also matched the settings that came with the vinyl I bought, and it was way too deep and almost cut through the mat.
