Product Description
Traditional pumps operate at set, unchangeable speeds. Those speeds are almost always higher than required. As a result, they overpower the jobs they're assigned to do, which wastes energy. Intelliflo allows custom programming of optimum pump speeds for specific tasks such as filtering, heating, cleaning, spa jets and waterfalls. for virtually all applications, the optimum speed is lower than the preset, unchangeable speeds of older pumps. When water moves more slowly for longer periods, it helps reduce the occurrence of algae that forms more easily when water is pumped briskly and then allowed to rest for long intervals. Your filter works more effectively because it has more time to sift out particles from the water, and because particles aren't forced through the Filter media under needlessly high pressure. Automatic chemical dispensers and chlorinators also work better when water is kept moving.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
We bought a house with an in ground pool, and our filtration system was taking in large amounts of air. The DE filter would make toilet flushing sounds within an hour of running. Our inline chlorine feeder wouldn't dissolve tablets either. They wanted to replace various parts of our filter, valves, gaskets, chlorine feeder, etc. I decided to just replace the pump after seeing evidence that it had been ran dry by the previous owners. Sure enough, replacing the old pump with this one fixed everything on its own.
The Intelliflo is very quiet. This is great if your equipment pad is close to the pool or have neighbors close by.
It's simple to program once you get used to the quirky "enter" and "select" button arrangement.
The slow ramping up of speed is especially nice when pumping to waste through a discharge hose. It looks like the vinyl hose will have a longer life before springing leaks due to the pressure being applied smoothly.
I really have no complaints yet. Even with no rebates from our energy provider I feel the price was worth it so long as the pump lasts a reasonable amount of time.
Ok, it's been 3 years now so I'll give an updated review.
-I installed the pump myself.
-15K gal. pool in Florida.
-Seals needed replacement at 18 months as others have indicated. I purchased the parts on Amazon, watched a few YouTubes on replacing the seals then did it in an afternoon. Success.
Other than that the pump's been great. A real money saver.
It works different than a normal pump.
My pool objectives: cleanest water, lowest maintenance at lowest cost. After 3 years I've been able to dial this in.
This is how I run this pump:
-Drain the pool in October for $30/month electrical savings during Oct - Mar which pays for next year's chemicals.
-I purchase a new filter every spring and install it after I've filled the pool and cleaned the well water silt from the pool.
-I use high levels of copper-based algaecide and 1/3 chlorine for low-chemical due to some family members' sensitive skin. Cutrine Plus algaecide for yearly startup then In The Swim algaecide for swim season. In the Swim tabs and granules for chlorine.
-I run #2 setting, 200 watts 24/7. The lower pressure, longer filtration makes for a very-fine filtration of water. Every few days I pull the filter and hose it down and replace. Then I'll run it at high-power, 2000 watts+ for an hour or two until the pool bottom is swept clean of debris. Then it goes back to 100% on the skimmer. If you use higher chlorine you may want to do 10% on the vacuum or main drain to prevent chemical 'hot spots'.
-At the first sign of algae I add algaecide and chlorine.
-I watch for algae like a hawk since it will kill a filter. Once a filter gets algae in it its filtering efficiency goes way down and cannot be reversed. New filter is solution.
Bottom line: I pay about $30 a month in electricity, clean the filter about once a week in swim season, never have to brush the walls, add algaecide about once a month and use a floater for chlorine. The only time I ever have to shock is at season start up when it's filled from well water. The water is brown and opaque so it gets shocked and high-algaecide on day 1. The result is minimum cost and maintenance for OUTSTANDING water quality. When the Ex came and took a water sample to have it checked the ppl at Pinch a Penny couldn't believe the water came from a pool because it was so clean.
So far so good. 10 months in. Saved hundreds installing it myself.
West Central Florida. I run it for several days at 1500 rpms/200 watts. When algae begins to show I clean the filter; turn on the pool vacuum until the algae is gone; clean the pool filter; add chlorine; switch back to skimmer and 1500 rpm. Then repeat as necessary.
Electricity savings are approx. $70 per month vs. the previous pump so yes, this will pay for itself in 18 months.
Tip: A few months ago I heard a squealing or whining beginning at high speed which sounded really bad. I read up on it and there is a rubber pump gasket which is accessible through a rectangular access hatch on the bottom. I sprayed the gasket with silicone spray using a long spray tube and the squealing is gone. Apparently this gasket dries out from the heat and what not and just needs an occasional re-lube.
It is quiet, incredibly energy efficient, and has been reliable thus far. We did have a Pentair dealer install it for us, and they warned us it would be difficult (impossible) to reprogram without carefully reading the guide. As a typical man who has no desire to read instruction manuals, I must admit they were right. The interface isn't intuitive at all. Therefore, for those of who have made a hobby out of heavy pool pump operational modifications on a regular basis, this may not be the pump for you. For the rest of the world that wants to set it and forget it, I can't recommend it enough.
When my previous pool pump ran, it sounded like an army of riding lawnmowers being chased by a massive swarm of bees. It dimmed the lights in three zip codes and caused neighborhood children to weep. This new one, despite being installed about 3 feet from a window, cannot be heard when sitting in the same room. Sometimes I imagine what it might sound like if we could hear it, and in my mind it makes a sound like a sweet, sweet mixture of violins, waterfalls, and unicorns singing.
My electric bill dropped about $30 - $50/month when I installed this pool pump. That's up to $600/year you can reallocate to a hobby, unless that hobby is frequent advanced pool pump operational modifications, in which case this pump may not be right for you (pay attention!)
I would unequivocally recommend this product to any Amazon shoppers unless:
1. They don't have a pool, or
2. They have a hobby involving frequent advanced pool pump operational modifications
