About this item
- CARBON PRODUCTION: All plants require a source of carbon, and Flourish Excel is a great and convenient source of bioavailable organic carbon.
- IRON PRODUCTION: Flourish Excel also possesses iron reducing properties, thus promoting the ferrous state of iron (Fe+2), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe+3).
- PHOTOSYNTHESIS: Plants must produce longer chain carbon compounds (photosynthetic intermediates). By dosing with Flourish Excel you bypass the involvement of chain carbon compounds, and introduce the already finished, structurally similar compounds.
- TREATMENT: On initial use or after a major (> 40%) water change, use 1 capful of Flourish Excel (5 mL) for every 40 L (10 US gallons). Thereafter, use 1 capful for every 200 L (50 US gallons) daily or every other day. For smaller dosing please note that each cap thread is approximately 1 mL.
- SAFETY: Flourish Excel is completely safe for fish, however if you have Anacharis in an aquarium in which you are dosing Flourish Excel, then it is recommended to use it every other day rather than daily.

Seachem Flourish Excel Bioavailable Carbon for The Planted Aquarium
Flourish Excel is a source of bioavailable organic carbon. All plants require a source of carbon. This is typically obtained from CO2, but, may also be derived from simple organic compounds (such as photosynthetic intermediates). The use of either CO2 injection or Flourish Excel does not necessarily negate the use of the other. Because the processes of producing photosynthetic intermediates and building onto them occur simultaneously, one can derive a substantial benefit with the use of Flourish Excel either alone or in conjunction with CO2 . The combination is particularly ideal for situations when continuing to add CO2 could result in dangerously low pH levels. Flourish Excel also has iron reducing properties which promote the ferrous state of iron (Fe+2), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe+3).

Over thirty years later Seachem is still approaching old problems in a new way.
Seachem’s philosophy is that the knowledgeable hobbyist makes the best customer. This is reflected in solid and reliable customer education and support as well as products proven in science and performance. While Seachem has grown rapidly into a national and international firm, it retains the culture of a small company and is readily available to its customers.

I have had very good results with my aquatic plants since I started using Excel. Even plants that are hard to grow, like Dwarf Hairgrass, thrive when using a combination of very high light levels and Flourish Excel. I have not noticed any adverse effects on the fish.
Will Excel completely prevent the growth of algae? No, it will not. It discourages algae growth, but will not prevent it completely. With a good tank maintenance routine, spare use of fertilizers, ideal light levels, and Seachem Excel, you should be able to manage algae. You will still get algae, but not to the point where it takes over your tank.
Seachem Flourish Excel is one of the best products you can get for a planted fish tank. Even if you already have a CO2 injection system, you can still use Excel. You will naturally have to play around with dosing.
Having said all of that, regular dosing of Excel can get expensive if you have a very large tank with a lot of fast-growing plants. Then again, an automated CO2 injection system will also set you back a lot of money. You can try and find cheaper sources of liquid CO2, like some aquarists have done and are using surgical instrument sterilizers. However, you need to know what you are doing and will naturally have to play around with dosages and concentration. If you have a small tank, say less than 75 gallon, your best choice would simply be to use Excel.
This is an excellent, excellent product. Algae is one of the banes of aquarium keeping. To find a product that not only encourages plant growth, but also discourages algae, is a double blessing. This is one of the most useful advances in aquarium-keeping in recent times.
Highly recommended.
The algae has begun to disintegrate and fast. It's patchy now and coming off in clumps. The rocks pictured were 90% covered in dark hair. You can see it is no longer a healthy algae color. The green spots I suspect are cyanobacteria but it hasn't spread beyond those rocks in months. If it does I have Blue-Green Stain Remover which works wonders. After one more day I'll do a good 50% water change and my tank will be beautiful again. This stuff is amazing. They should really advertise its algae controlling properties more. I know it's not really this products job to kill algae, but it seems to be a good side effect of it helping plants grow. It really drives a wedge between aquatic plants and algae.
Bought this because I got an infestation of black hair/black beard algae. It came in on the back of an assassin snail and began to cover everything. It's friggin everywhere. After research I found there are 3 options: Start over, use hydrogen peroxide , or use this stuff. Since I added the first dose of this 6 days ago 2 things have happened: The algae has stopped spreading and plants that were struggling or just slow to grow have started improving drastically. I even see a 1/4" of new susswassertang popping out of the algae that is covering it. I've never seen it grow that fast. I wish I had started using this stuff sooner. As of now the algae is not dead yet, but I'm sure it will be since it's color has changed from very dark green to a sickly light green with spots that look like rust. I'm thinking that with the ferrous iron going on, I might even see more red coloring in my ludwigia in the future. I've got tetras, assassin snails, amano shrimp and "pest snails" and they all seem unaffected by the product, so 5 stars all the way.
A note about the snails: assassin snails are not a good way to control "pest snails" You put those guys in there and they go to work eating as many pond snails as they are able all the while mating and laying eggs every day. My tanks is going to crash hard when they all hatch. Right now I'm just trying to save my beautiful plants in time to migrate them and the fish and shrimps out. I'm going to migrate some pond snails over as well. Turns out they weren't pests. They were policing the algae better than anything in the tank. The assassin snails mucked that up right good.

It's hard because I know that this is a great product, I just can't really use it because I like my anacharis too much. Once my anacharis either recovers or dies I'm going to switch to dosing my tank every other day and only ever a single dose and it'll be fine, just be really careful because it's not good for every plant.
