Fuel Heated Water, But No Full Boil. Stove Works Fine
I bought the stove almost 4 years ago for emergencies but never had to use it. I decided to get it out and test it. The following is more about the heat tablets than the stove. The stove is simple, compact, sturdy and does its job. It has 2 positions for smaller or larger vessels. There is not much I need to say about the stove. To test it, I measured 500 ml of water (about 2 cups), per the description, into a metal cup. The water’s initial temperature was about 70 degrees. I used a tablet that came with the stove. It took one match and about 15 seconds to get the tablet lit. At 8 minutes I used a meat thermometer to check the water. The max temperature I got was 195 degrees. The tablet lasted for about 11 minutes before it was consumed. For reference, the air temperature was about 75 degrees, no wind and the altitude was about 640 feet above sea level. There were air bubbles at the bottom, and some water movement and vapor, but I never got to a full rolling boil. I repeated the test with another tablet I got in a box set of 12 tablets (several months older than the stove or about 4-1/2 years old). I got a max temperature of 205 degrees. While not a true boil of 212 degrees, I suspect the water was hot enough for rehydrating a freeze dried meal or making hot drinks. And the tablet lasted about the time Esbit says it would, about 11 minutes. I suspect had I used a lid on the cup and/or a windscreen, I might have gotten a higher temp or a quicker time to the max temp. The tablet left a lot of soot on the bottom of the cup. The new aluminum cup was black on the bottom after 11 minutes over the lit tablet. However, I got the soot off with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.A lot is said about the odor. The sealed tablets did not have any significant odor that I could notice. But the open tablet did have a strong odor. Interestingly, I have a Bradford Pear tree in full bloom next to my house. The blooms have a very distinct “fragrance.” The Esbit tablets smell just like the tree blooms. The tablets are sealed with a thin plastic sheet that the tablets can be pushed through. It’s probably a good idea to keep the tablets sealed in a heavy plastic bag for extended shelf life.I gave it 4 stars because I could not get a full boil as the description says.
