- Folding Deck: The design features a patented all gear rack and pinion system with a Safety Lock Deck that locks the deck into place when the treadmill is in the upright position. The F80 also comes with an Easy Assist Folding Deck Design, which allows you to release the deck, step back, and the deck will unfold itself silently while you watch.

- Cushion Flex Whisper Deck: Proprietary stealth technology provides a comfortable, quiet workout while reducing impact by up to 40%.

- SOLE LCD Display: A vibrant blue screen with large, clean readouts provide users with helpful information, including heart rate, speed, pace, calories burned, and other useful bits of information.
- Integrated Message Board: An alphanumeric text center sends scrolling messages to the user in an effort to guide them through all of the details of every workout. The message board will also recap your entire workout after you are finished, so you can see your progress.
- High Torque Motor with Flywheels: All SOLE treadmills feature the heaviest duty chassis and motors in their class. Features include powder-coated, all-steel welded frames and heavy duty stable inclines, industrial quality motors with large diameter, all-steel zinc coated balanced flywheels for a vibration-free secure running/walking surface.

- Belts: Woven two-ply belts with four layers, including two rubber layers over a middle PVC layer with a nylon backing that rolls over the deck and rollers. The rubber provides the durability, the PVC stops the belt from over-stretching, and the nylon provides a smooth, static-free surface to glide over the deck and rollers.

The wide belt is awesome and after researching other models with a 22 inch belt they were well into the $2,000 to $3,000 range. The wide belt allows for a more natural stride. Regarding noise, initially the machine was really noisy. In fact you could hear us running outside the house! A call to customer service cleared things up quickly. The customer service wait time was brief and the service representative was knowledgeable and professional. The representative registered our machine on the spot and diagnosed the problem as a combination of lubricant drying while sitting in a warehouse and a possible bad roller. A replacement roller was mailed ASAP at no charge and a local technician came out fairly quickly. The roller was fine and did not have to be replaced. The technician conducted standard maintenance and added lubrication to a few spots. The machine is now running really smoothly and quietly for the last two months. In fact, it's so quiet you can't hear it upstairs.
There are a few minor issues. Several reviews reference the slow acceleration and deceleration speeds. These complaints are accurate as the machine does take a long time to get to the full desired speed, especially if you are skipping several levels (for example going from level 4 to 7). It probably takes 30 seconds to reach your desired speed. I think hardcore interval runners would be disappointed with this machine and should look at other models. We have not played around with the programs or the heart monitor option. We usually just use the manual mode. I wish the instruction booklet spent more time talking about the program features but it does not, which makes me suspect the program features are not particularly interesting.
Overall I think this treadmill was a great value and I imagine it will last for quite some time. With the impressive warranty and customer service I feel like I got my money's worth.
Some tips:
If you are going to place the machine on a flat surface like hardwood or tile use a treadmill mat as the machine has a tendency to slightly wobble on these surfaces. This can be really annoying so the mat becomes a must have with this machine.
Don't make the mistake we did and try and carry the 300 pound machine into your house from the front door. If you are going to keep the machine downstairs unfasten the deck strap and place the machine in the upright position. It will then be super easy to move. If you are going to place the machine upstairs get professionals to move it. It is VERY HEAVY.
One person could probably assemble the machine by themselves but I would not advise it. This is really a two person job.
I hope this review was helpful. Thanks
Original review:
Acquiring this treadmill was a nightmare! But so far, it's been worth it.
I decided I wanted a Sole treadmill because they have actual buttons. The flat panels that are popular now look nice, but it can be hard to find the sweet spot, especially when you're in motion. After 5 months of twice a day workouts on an otherwise serviceable Weslo 5.9, my poor fingers hurt and I wanted real buttons. I settled on the F80, because it's at that spot where the warranty improves. I don't need a huge motor, as I'm tiny and I walk, rather than run, but I wanted something sturdy and reliable. Also, you can get the F80 for $50 less than the F65 if you watch prices.
So, I saw that the price of the F80 was where I wanted to be, but I needed to know what "Scheduled Delivery" means in Amazon-land; there was no way I would be able to get a 300 pound box into my apartment on the second floor. Someone really needs to put casters (rather than just wheels) on the bottom of stuff like this, rather than just wheels! I emailed and received an unhelpful response. After 3 rounds, Amazon was promising me "white glove" inside delivery with assembly at no additional cost. SCORE! I went to buy the thing, and the price was up $150. I called Amazon for a price match, and they wouldn't budge, which surprised me. Especially because the price was back down about 5 hours later. So I ordered my treadmill.
After I placed the order, I confirmed again the promised enhanced delivery. Yes, no problem. Getting excited now. The day before the delivery, in the late afternoon, the delivery company calls and says the treadmill arrived damaged and they sent it back. So I ordered a replacement. The day of the second attempt finally arrived.
The delivery guys forgot their dolly! I live on the second floor. It's a 300 pound box. Thankfully, at least it fit in the elevator. So far so good. I have them put the box in the living room so they can carry the pieces into my workout room. "You don't think we're going to assemble this, do you?" one of them asks.
A conversation with Amazon later, I'm assembling it myself. This was NOT fun. You don't really have to lift any heavy pieces, but it's fussy and the instructions are bad. You need to slide two different pieces of trim onto the uprights before you can screw them down. And one of them has an electrical connection that needs to be plugged in, too. There wasn't any extra wire, so I'm supporting a heavy-ish upright with two pieces of plastic on it while trying to make a connection with maybe an inch of give. Except I needed to do this three times, as the instructions were bad. I had to redo it, adding a piece of trim each time.
Then, the display needs to be bolted on from the back, but it's easier to support it from the front. So, of course, I bolted it on incorrectly, and had to fix it, dropping a washer in the meantime. Good thing I have excellent eyes! I subscribed to the theory mentioned by another reviewer that you should probably bolt the display on, then connect the wires, because you'd rip out the wires if you dropped the display with them connected. Of course, it would suck to drop the display either way. Also, there's a wire tie holding one of the wires to the upright. I probably should have removed this first, as it goes through a bolt hole. I had to cut it, then pull the pieces out with pliers.
The last step is to secure the pieces of trim. I guess to make it look nicer, some of the screw holes for this are deep in the pieces. So you have to drop the screw into a small, deep hole, get it lined up correctly, then try to get your screwdriver in there to fasten it. I'm sure there are specialty tools for this, but I don't have them.
Then, the belt was tracking way to the left. And the part of the manual that tells you how to fix this is far away from the part that tells you how to adjust the tension. Even though I would think this was a tension problem. So I may have made some wild tension adjustments before I got that sorted.
Word to the wise - the heart rate monitor comes with a battery pre-installed. It also comes with an extra battery. This is nice, but there's no indication that there is a battery inside already so I had to check. And, instead of the battery compartment screwing open with a coin, it has tiny eyeglass style screws. They're a little soft, so of course I stripped them all. I didn't even get one of them all the way out. I probably wouldn't have worn the strap anyway, but still.
The speakers seem to be loud enough, but I would only use them if the volume control of my music source was easy to use, or if I knew whatever I would be listening to was at a steady volume. Instead, I've got external speakers set up. I have a small tablet I use to listen to music that I velcroed over the fans, which are pretty useless anyway, rather than covering the display. I suppose that's actually my biggest gripe, that the place to put a tablet or whatever is right under the display, rather than over.
So, with all this whining and drama, why did I give the treadmill 5 stars? It's quiet and sturdy. While my knees didn't hurt while using the Weslo, they would be a little achy after. They don't hurt anymore at all. And some of the uglier callouses I was developing on my toes are a little less ugly for some reason. I set up a user defined workout and now all I have to do is turn on the console by hitting any button, then hit the user workout button and start and I'm off. If you make changes, it asks if you want to save them after the workout. The buttons are convenient and I really like the ones on the armrests. I actually don't need to use the buttons much while I'm working out, unlike the constant fumbling with them on the Weslo, but I like that they're there and easy to use.
People complain that there aren't that many pre-programmed workout "apps," but you can customize the ones there are by selecting a maximum speed and time. If you change the speed during the workout, the rest will reflect that change. I don't believe this is so for the incline. You can also make your own workout. Once you've entered your preferred settings, it remembers them for next time, or you can start again.
If you are very tall and have balance issues, you might want to reconsider. The arms are pretty low (and far apart), even for me, especially at an incline. But it's better if you can walk without holding the arm rests, anyway. All the buttons are within easy reach, even for tiny me, though the console SEEMS huge.
This treadmill doesn't have all the bells and whistles that some others in its price range do - no iFit (extra charge anyway) or internet connected this or that. But I wanted a sturdy treadmill with a good warranty from a company with a good reputation for service, and that's what I got.
I'm a little nervous over some of the reports of initial quality issues, but four workouts in, I'm getting comfortable.
Update after a few weeks:
After a few dozen workouts, I've gotten more of a sense of what I love about this treadmill and what I could live without:
1) Customer service. It seems that emailing Sole is not a good idea, as they don't respond. However, I decided that I at least wanted to have the heart rate monitor strap available and try it out, so I called them up. They answered pretty quickly. I told them that I broke the thing myself and they sent me a new one for free. It took a little over a week to arrive because it was backordered, but arrive it did. I'm glad to have it and I've used it a few times. I like that it shows percent max heart rate, as well as pulse.
2) User workouts are awesome! You can set up two different ones. You can also make changes as you go, then save them afterwards. I'm still kind of wavering on whether I prefer the 1:40 segments to having the workout divided into minutes and I wish there was a choice, but I'm satisfied with the way it is.
3) The heart rate handles give me a good shock when I touch them. The treadmill itself seems to be well grounded, as I don't get a shock if I touch the metal hand rail first.
4) On my old treadmill, I had to wear crocs, as the sneakers I got made my knees hurt. On this one, the sneakers, plus the better quality treadmill, have really eliminated almost all of my knee pain. I find that I am able to go faster than I dared on my old treadmill.
5) I do kind of wish there was a little more granularity in the information provided on the display. It only shows tenths of a mile and full calories. In addition, the quarter mile track is divided into, I believe, 23 segments, which is just weird.
Overall, I still think the quirks are far overridden by the positives and I'm happy with my purchase.
