Product Description
Physics Pro V2.0: Advanced Physics Kit. Physics Pro is our biggest, most advanced physics kit. With this kit, you can continue your study of statics and dynamics from previous lessons and begin your study of more advanced topics in physics, including fluid dynamics, energy, oscillation, hydraulics and pneumatics. By adding advanced topics like fluid dynamics to your physics repertoire, you can now build some really spectacular models and devices, such as a wind tunnel, pneumatic shocks and a hydraulic lift. You will see how physics extends far beyond the classroom, giving us an amazing set of tools that can be applied in the real world to engineer marvelous things. The main focus of the kit is the behavior of the two most important fluids in our world - water and air - and objects immersed in them. You will investigate how air and water rest and flow, what they can carry and how they move. With experiments and models, you will find out what forces work on them and what kinds of energy they possess. You will learn how ships float and airplanes fly, why a streamlined shape lets a car drive faster and how power plants convert a current of water into electrical current. The 96-page, full-color experiment manual has two major sections. In the first part, you will enter the physics lab, where you will get to know the properties of air and water and become familiar with currents and energy. There is a series of 17 experiments in which you will stat building smaller models. in the second part, you will move on to the workshop, where you will build 14 larger models of complex real-world devices. More than 213 parts are included in this kit, which are compatible with all of our other Physics kits.

How did we get our start?
Thames & Kosmos was founded in 2001 when a Rhode Island science museum director and her son partnered with a 200-year-old German publishing house to fulfill the great need for science education materials that were more stimulating, effective, relevant—and of course, fun!
How do we support our products?
Our full-time team of in-house product experts is professional, knowledgeable, and responsive. End users should not hesitate to reach out to speak to an actual person should they need help with an experiment, missing part, or anything else!

He did open it at one point and fool around with it a bit, but he never really got into it, and I wasn't sure why. So I decided one day to sit down with him and try one of the experiments. I found out I was biting off a bit more than I'd anticipated.
On the plus side, this kit is very comprehensive--far more comprehensive than I anticipated. It has many, many parts, and the instruction book is packed with experiments exploring various aspects of physics. Experiments are divided into sections on air, water, etc.
However, it's so advanced that I definitely wouldn't recommend it for kids, and while a lot of the experiments do seem appropriate for my nine-year-old, I don't think he could manage a lot of them without adult help. This is disappointing because I'd hoped he'd be able to tinker and discover things on his own. Even I was rather overwhelmed by the instruction book. Plus while most of what you need is in the box, some experiments do require other simple, cheap objects, so it's a good idea to look one over and prepare in advance.
As for that instruction book, I was disappointed in it. It's got a lot of facts in it, breaking down how and why things work, and that's great, but it read more like a high school or college textbook than I'd expected. The experiment setup does include instructions, but they're very basic, and you mostly have to rely on the pictures that accompany them to figure out how to assemble the experiments. I think the kit would have been a lot more user friendly if the book had contained step-by-step instructions, the way Lego sets do.
All in all, this may be a really great kit for older kids (probably at least 12) who are interested in physics. I could also see it working very well in a classroom setting, where a teacher could walk students through the building and experimentation process. For a casual, at-home kit, though, I don't think it works as well. It might have been better had the kit been broken down more into subparts, say maybe a kit dedicated solely to hydraulics, as it would then contain fewer pieces and could have more detailed instructions.
The set is quite large and has a lot of very small pieces, so caution should be taken with small children and pets. Our dining room table is our usual work area, except for the the water related experiments. The included manual is well written and easy to follow, but younger users will definitely need adult help with some of the builds and explanation of advanced concepts.
This kit is an excellent starting point that will give your budding scientist a good foundation to build and expand on the concepts being shown here. I was very impressed with the included wind tunnel in particular since my daughter build a similar one many years ago for a Science Fair experiment on lift (she won 1st in her division for that one).
Highly Recommended!
