Not only is The Nightmare Before Christmas one of the best musicals of the past two decades; it may well be Danny Elfman's masterpiece, successfully integrating his main influences (from Cab Calloway to Nino Rota) into a fantastic whole. The first disc of this reissue features the original soundtrack, its songs still teetering between dark humor and poetic flights of fancy; this so-called kids' music is at least as sophisticated and skilled as anything you're likely to hear on Broadway. The second disc includes demo versions of four songs on which Elfman plays and sings everything, and five new covers of some of Nightmare's best-loved songs. Marilyn Manson successfully applies his spooky Weimar-circus style on "This Is Halloween" while Panic! At the Disco's lushly orchestrated take on the same tune is closer to the original. Fiona Apple's poignant "Sally's Song" is enhanced by very nice string charts, and She Wants Revenge does a disco take on "Kidnap the Sandy Claws." Best perhaps is Fall Out Boy's cover of "What's This?" which sounds like an unexpected cross between the Beach Boys and Queen. A highly recommended set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Any Boingo fan will delight in an Elfman composition whether it be The Simpson's theme, his latest sountrack or the magical Serenada Schizophrana.
Any Elfman devotee will feel blessed to hear the demo's which have been included on this special edition. Those being less familiar with the talents of Danny Elfman will, no doubt, find much to appreciate through this collection.
The inclusion of artists such as Marilyn Manson and Panic! at the Disco is a wonderful touch as it indicates how Danny Elfman has inspired many with his intuitive and humorous touches.
An absolute 'Treat' for those who love Jack Skellington.
An undeniable treasure for those yet to meet The Pumpkin King.
Please note that if you order the whole album for download, you DO get the covers that say "album only". I had mistakenly thought that I could only get the covers from the physical album, so that was a nice surprise.

To describe the content of this album, I'd say that Danny Elfman gives us all the songs and tunes that were used in this last part of what I call "Tim Burton's Christmas Trilogy", which consisted of Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns and Nightmare Before Christmas. All of this is compiled on the first disc while the second offers excellent interpretations of some of the songs by musicians like Marilyn Manson, Fiona Apple, She Wants Revenge, and Fall Out Boy. As a special candy treat, the composer also offers to us Demos of five of his songs which he showed to Tim Burton.
Inside the CD, the leaflet offers all the songs' lyrics, which is great to anybody who would love to sing to those tunes for the holidays or if you are listening to the album and want to sing-along.
As for the sound quality of the album, I found the sound balanced and clean of any noises or sound dirt.
In the end, I have nothing but praise for this soundtrack which I think stands among the best that Danny Elfman did in his career, but also in his Tim Burton collaboration, along with Edward Scissorhands and Batman Returns.
