Summer writes a lot, so for an easily digestible overview of her various series, visit her website: www.summerhanford.com

As Summer Hanford, Summer currently writes Pride & Prejudice retellings (with a touch of humor...and sometimes a little adventure). Summer is currently working on more Pride & Prejudice variations with Renata McMann, as well as writing some on her own, and creating several illustrated Children's Books.

Summer lives in New York with her husband and compulsory, deliberately spoiled, cats. The newest addition to their household, an energetic setter-shepherd mix, is (still) not yet appreciated by the cats (we literally have a wall down the center of our living room), but is well loved by the humans. I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet romance loving Lanora and William both. And I appreciated what a hero William was in real life. Add in some laugh out loud moments and a perfect HEA, and I had a very enjoyable read. Looking forward to Ms. Hanford's next book.

This is a delightful tale of two people with secret identities, unknown connections and a care for the downtrodden.

Both have an admiration, as does much of London, for a "widow" and a "knight" who serve the poor and beset upon in the evening hours. She hands out loaves of bread on the steps of a church. And he, being so familiar with the darker sections of London, acts as a type of patrol finding and stopping crimes against those unable to protect themselves. He has earned the title of Lord Lefthook while she simply goes by Mrs. Smith.

He is leading a double life: necessary due to his evil father's demands that he act the part of a typical roué in society, even setting down the rule that he cannot marry until a certain age. His father is willing to pay for a mistress, but, here also, he can't keep one for any length of time as it might show an affection...which is forbidden. Marriage is only for begetting heirs. BUT then called to his father's barrister's Lethbridge’s office he learns that the latter rule has been amended due to his father's learning he is near to death. William Greydrake, future Marquess of Westlock learns that he must marry within 20 days and must select from a list provided. If he fails all will go to his half-sister.

Part of the mystery in this book is due to the fact that William's father has had three wives and two have died while one has disappeared. Or so the public is told. William youth was spent with his mother in hiding and when he finally revealed his existence to his father a tale was invented with ties to Egypt to cover the fact that he was not in England for years.

Lady Lanora Hadler is the daughter of Robert Hadler, Duke of Solworth, who works in parallel with his fellow archaeologist, Mr. Darington, the man giving the excuses for William's "missing years". Lanora and William have been aware of each other while making appearances at balls or otherwise among the ton but neither has found reasons to want to know the other better...until her name is found on the list of acceptable brides for William.

We read this from alternating viewpoints. And the Egyptian connection has its own mystery. Her father refuses to allow her to come live with him and even seems to ignore her letters. William has kept up a correspondence with Mr. Darington in Egypt, who is the man he was supposedly living with for ten years. The man's letters tell about his daughter and in the reading about this young lady William has developed some admiration. But he has never met the father nor, of course, the daughter.

It was very interesting to read about these two people crossing paths and not really knowing with whom they were dealing. BUT even when they do meet, secrets are not revealed and soon forces are working to prevent their futures being united.

This story has no MA scenes. It does have several interesting character in both lives: a young street urchin, a maid/friend and a courtesan who play significant roles. (less)

Wonderfully sweet love story with lots of action, villains, and happy endings. And I absolutely adored the main character, Lanora. Highly recommend!

An entertaining story, with plenty of surprises. I'd like to have seen more about archaeology or Egypt, but these were peripheral to the story.

William Greydrake, future Marquess of Westlock, is a rake on the outside but a defender of less fortunates in secret. Lady Lanora Hadler, daughter of the Duke of Solworth, is an ice queen on the outside but just a regular girl and defender of less fortunates in secret. Lord William must marry, by order of his father the Marquess of Westlock and a vicious man. Lord William keeps up the facade of a cad and a worthless rake to appease his father, and he's been given a list of eligible young women of the ton from which to choose his wife. Lady Lanora's name is on the list, and he chooses her. They both have many secrets, so what follows is an awkward and contentious courtship.

I like this author. She's a superb writer. I took a chance on this non-JAFF work and although it's well written as usual, I found the premise to be somewhat silly and predictable. The "do-gooder" activities of the main characters reminded me of the Legend of Zorro, where a disguise is worn while helping the poor and unfortunate. However, the romance is lovely, if a little poorly developed. One day they meet. Almost the next day he's professing his ardent love. You gotta love these nice persons, but their love isn't based on much of anything.

The evil Marquess is a bit over-the-top. We're supposed to be sympathetic with Lanora's dad, the Duke. But I can't muster much sympathy for a father who abandons his daughter when she's four, runs off to Egypt, never answers her letters, and leaves her to be raised by his housekeeper, all because his wife died. Sorry, but he's an idiot for doing that.

The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it with reservations for a light and silly romance.
