Honestly, I have no idea what these other folks are talking about. Some were complaining about spending hours setting the unit up?? Only if they had to stop and learn English. After running through the set up which was no longer than 15-20 minutes of super easy questions, I was not getting live tv. I called Spectrum and the tech paired the tuning adapter and m-card to the bolt + and whammo! It worked. The cable company tech couldn't believe it because the m-card I was given from Spectrum was defective and would not respond to commands. He actually had to convince me there was something wrong. I did replace the m-card the next day just to be safe. But even though the equipment mounted to the machine was broken, the Bolt made it work anyways! I cannot guarantee it was the bolt making it work but I like to believe it was.
The TiVo guide is simply awesome. It is very intuitive and makes just about every operation you do with a dvr so much faster and easier. The guide shows new episodes, season and episode numbers of each show, and just a lot more information for you then the cable dvr. The machine is snappy on commands not like the cable machine where you get into a last channel loop where you hit the button and wait for a second and then hit the button again, and the channels keep changing back and forth and you feel like throwing the remote through the tv.
The one grievance I could have with the process so far is the service agreements. I called Tivo to activate the Bolt plus. I wanted a month or two before I committed to the lifetime service. Before I plopped down $550 greenbacks, I wanted to make sure the Tivo wasn't a big steaming pile of crap, but no. You have 30 days to make a decision. I am on the monthly pay plan with the year obligation and after the 30 days is up, I have to wait one whole year before I could make a change to the service plan even when upgrading the service plan. Fortunately, I do like the Bolt plus very much and will do the lifetime service before the thirty day money back period is up.
I have had the machine only for a few days now. I would not hesitate to revise or edit this review in the future if things change. I felt I needed to make a fast review because of the ratings so far and how new the Bolt Plus is.
I am a long time Tivo customer. I've used tivo since the day they came out and have generally loved the product. The only time I have not used a tivo was when AT&T came out with a dish based TV system and DVR called ultimate TV. I think I used this for a year and hated it. It was laggy, it made mistakes on recording shows and was generally aweful software. So I loved Tivo and have two of them in my house.
I decided to buy the bolt because I was wanting to upgrade my TV to 4k. So the day I got the bolt and put my cable card in and fired it up I was pretty excited. I think this was the happiest day I had in over two years with this product.
So after setting up a couple shows and watching tv I noticed that it would get random bursts noise in the video. Little burst like when you watch a video the bits are not all there this would happen randomly maybe every couple minutes. It was VERY irritating and not acceptable. I called support and they had me do a bunch of things. In the end they said my Signal to Noise ratio was too high. As an old electrical engineer this didn't make much sense but hey what can you do. So they said the problem was with my cable and I needed to get an attenuator. So I called the cable company and they said everything tested fine, they would have to send a tech on site to test the signal in my house. They came out and tested it and said it was ok, I had them go through everything and showed them the tivo diagnostics showing signal errors. So long short they replaced the box on the side of my house, the cable in my attic going to my tv, and played with a bunch of splitters, said some boxes have issues because fios signal is 'hot'. Finally after playing with attenuators and splitters and a lot of trial and error, the problem was pretty rare but still happening. I went back and forth on it for a bit and obviously spent a fair amount of money getting services done. I wasn't happy but it was tolerable and I used it like that for 6-7 months.
I'm not sure what prompted it but I ended up calling TiVo about something else, namely my bill. They were charging my CC for services on the old tivo I replaced and canceled when I set this up. Needless to say I wasn't happy and also unloaded on the noise issue. Finally they credited me some money and said they would replace my tivo.
At this point I do want to say that the Tivo support people were generally great, it was not had to get hold of support and the queue times were pretty quick. They tried to help me within the limits of what they could do and I was not pleasant to talk to at times.
I hooked up the replacement and the picture was perfect. Everything seemed great. Then I found that the apps didn't work except for vudu. Looking it up online it was a common problem. I called tivo like 3-4 times and each time they were escalating it and said in a week or two it would just start working. I would receive email that they reset something and the problem would go away with the next update. Unfortunately it didn't.
Support then said we will send you a replacement tivo. BTW unless you pay extra they will not send you the replacement until you send back your old one first so each exchange I paid extra money for the exchange and one time expedited shipping. Ok so I get a new tivo bolt hook it up and the apps are good but it is complaining my cable card is bad. finally after replacing it two time and having the cable people on site messing with my cable and testing signals I gave up. I had an old tivo pulled it out and tried the cable card fine. So frustrating as I was on with both cable company and tivo for a couple weeks going back and forth on this and made 2 hour and a half trips to replace the cards.
So the tivo people say ok lets replace it again. I say I want a new on not refurbished one. They say they can't do that, I respond that this is the last time so do whatever it takes to test it and make sure it is perfect. So this one comes in and low and behold everything works. Perfect noise free video, no errors in diagnostics, all the apps run properly and I am breathing a sigh of relief thinking this 1+ year trial is over. For 3 weeks I load all the one passes start recording shows and am very happy.
Well today it died. No lights no nothing. I went to best buy and bought a new power supply. Nothing. Tested the outlet it is good. I just got off the phone and canceled my tivo service on both boxes.
So I wish this worked. I love the tivo software and the specs and what this box does when it works. But it appears to me that the bolt hardware must be very cheap and tivo quality has degraded. No way you can have 4 boxes that all fail in different ways as random chance unless the hardware is poor. So this is a warning to anyone looking at this product. I think tivo is in financial trouble and this is just the cracks beginning to show. Sad to see what was once a great product fall to this state esp when there is no real competition in the niche.
