The 10-album/12-CD box, and digital download each feature all of the material officially released by Bowie during the nascent stage of his career from 1969 to 1973. All of the formats include tracks that have never before appeared on CD/digitally as well as new remastersExclusive to the boxed sets will be Re:Call 1, a new 2-disc compilation of non-album singles, single versions & b-sides. It features a previously unreleased single edit of "All The Madmen" which was originally set for a U.S. release but was never actually released. Also included is the original version of "Holy Holy," which was only ever released on the original 1971 Mercury single and hasn't been available on any release since. Also exclusive to all versions of FIVE YEARS 1969 - 1973 will be a 2003 stereo remix of The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars by the album's original co-producer Ken Scott, previously only available on DVD with the LP/DVD format of the 40th anniversary edition of the album. The CD boxed set will include faithfully reproduced mini-vinyl versions of the original albums and the CDs will be gold rather than the usual silver. What it is, is a mostly comprehensive reissue collection of officially released only material from Bowie's glam period once he became famous. "David Bowie (1969)", "The Man Who Sold The World", "Hunky Dory", and "Pin Ups" are actually new masters. The rest of the albums are untouched from their last issuing (on CD between 2003-2012). New also is a "Ziggy" mix, (previously only available on the 2003 SACD edition and 2012 vinyl-and-DVD-Audio edition of the album). All of these are classic albums, without question. Comparing the sound really is the heart of the issue. My personal comparison and appreciation is from a variety of RCA vinyl, and Rykodisc, Virgin CDs. With the exception of the deliberately different "Ziggy" (more of a remix, with the different elements arranged alternately but with the same over-all effect), everything sounds great! There is a good balance, with nice sharpness but maintaining warmth. Nothing comes off as radically different, or out of range, but as 'true' and clear as you could want.
What it isn't, is an all-encompassing set. None of his early mod singles or first album are included. None of the 'previously-unreleased' or alternate bonus tracks that have been added over the years are present. No 'new' extras. The 'Five Years' gimmick is good, but Bowie's eras don't fit so neatly into these easily consumable or marketable chunks. The glam period really ended with "Diamond Dogs" (1974), and the self titled 1969 album fits more comfortably with Bowie's earliest output than it does with "The Man Who Sold The World", which is when the Spiders From mars Band begins to coalesce. But, I digress, and I have far more conceptual issues with the following sets than this...
As far as the material presented here, is it worth it? Maybe. If you are just getting into Bowie, absolutely buy! If you are already a fan but on a budget and wondering if you need to upgrade, skip. If you are die-hard (and amazingly haven't already purchased), do it. Like me, you'll get off on examining the subtle differences between mixes, and enjoy hearing everything all over again.

"Amsterdam" (Brel),"Holy Holy" (Spiders version) "Velvet Goldmine" (B-side to the 1975 single reissue of "Space Oddity") e "Ragazzo Solo, Ragazza Sola" (versione in italiano di Space Oddity con testi di Mogol)
Che dire in conclusione un box strepitoso consigliato sia ai neofiti di questo grande artista che ai collezionisti più esigenti. 5 stelle senza compromessi, ma attenzione al prezzo di acquisto!
This was a critical period for Bowies career and with Ken Scott his engineer and co-producer, he made some total classic records. Packaging is faithfull to the original including inside pictures on liner notes. the orig record label be it Phillips for David's first outing, A Space Oddity (simply named David Bowie for the European release), or RCA, the label Bowie was with till he released his Scary Monsters album. Generally speaking, Hunky Dory, Alladin Sane and Man Who Sold The World are kind of hard to find used so getting them all in this one set plus the BSides of radio edits of album tracks and unreleased marterial like Velvet Goldmine are in the 2 LP Recall collection. This set includes a superbly bound box set wtih sleeve that pulls out holding 13 180 gram LP's + a comprehensive hard cover bound book with short blurbs about each album and it's tracks by Ken Scott and others. This really is a must have in my opinion.
