Four paramilitary soldiers are directed by their leaders to leave Detroit and travel to Wisconsin in search of a former member who had left the fold and was now leaking information about the group to the authorities. Their orders were clear - kill him when he was located. It didn't take long, but they didn't count on him being accompanied by an FBI agent. Both men were driven out to the mountains by the soldiers where they found a secluded group of cabins. The snitch was killed and the agent badly beaten and left near death when the group left for a nearby town for the night. They'd deal with the agent and dispose of the bodies tomorrow.

Jacob Alexander, a computer geek, caught his wife having sex with his brother and decided to put it all behind him. He took his savings and headed for the hills, building a small cabin where he became a hermit. He shared a small lake with four other cabins on the far side and agreed to watch over them for the owners during the winter months. When making one of his checks, he wasn't counting on finding two bodies in the farthest cabin. He didn't have an internet or cell phone coverage so there was no way to contact the police. It was his job now to protect the innocent and resolve this problem.

When they face off in the morning, the tension builds and keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the end. That is where I was quickly disappointed as the story abruptly ended. One reviewer mentioned that it was like a final chapter was missing and no follow-up on the characters. The author doesn't say that the story would be continued in another installment. Too much was left open ended.

The story is short and can be read in an afternoon. I was very close to rating this three stars...hopefully the author takes this information and does a rewrite.

I must admit, the blurb intrigued me. The story idea had considerable merit and Koloen did pull me in to the premise. Nothing gets a person’s attention more then watching a man move from having a brilliant career, a happy marriage, and enjoying life, to becoming a hermit in the woods. Why would anyone make such a major turn around in their life? Well Jacob’s thorn was a job that had become more of a burden than love and the dagger that gutted him was a cheating wife.

Renovating an isolated cabin became his healing. I can understand that as I, myself, renovated an abandoned house that most said should be torn down, not rebuilt. But in an isolated wilderness? No thanks, not for me. Jacob was angry enough that his new world made perfect sense. His limited contact with the outside world was with vacationers in cabins across the lake and his occasional need to stock up on groceries. Other than that his world was peaceful, quiet, and well, isolated.

It was all that until he heard the gunshots from across the lake, the frozen lake in the middle of winter. His distant neighbors had all left the woods allowing winter to settle around their cabins. No one should be there, especially with heavy artillery. As isolated as he was, Jacob had to walk miles to find enough signal to call for help. Help in that territory meant an assistant sheriff might drive by to see who was making the noise. Spoiler Alert: The sheriff found out in a way that he definitely didn’t like.

Koloen pulled me in, had me wondering what would happen, got my interest and… he left me hanging. The end of the story came way too fast. Yes he tied up all the loose ends, but at a pace that didn’t keep with the prior speed of the story. I wish he put just a bit more time into the closing chapters. Had he, this book would rate 4 or even 5 stars. Apparently I’m not alone in my thoughts as may other reviewers wanted more, too.

Jacob has been living in his cabin in the woods of Northern Wisconsin for years. He, after a failed marriage, chose to isolate himself from the world. His cabin is at the top of a hill overlooking a pond and four more cabins on the other side of the pond. It is winter and snowing enough to make everything impassible. Jacob has, for the owners and occasional users of the other cabins, kept an eye on them. One day he spots two SUVs at the furthest cabin and some men nearby. Not knowing who these men were and why they were there he goes to investigate. While he is hiking over, the vehicles leave. He looks around the cabin and through the windows. There he sees a man bound to a chair and appearing to be dead. He also sees a dead man on the floor. Jacob leaves, tries to contact the Police (cell phone reception is very iffy) and decides what he will do about all this. The novel goes on from there. It also tells some of the back story of the antagonists and what led to their being at the cabin. It is well written and the chapters are short and to the point. It will keep most readers engrossed. Thanks to the author and publisher for an e-galley for an honest review.

The title of this book intrigued me, especially the part about an "off the grid suspense thriller." But that was a perfect description of this story. The first few paragraphs might seem a little slow, but very soon it picks up speed and then it just takes off. And there is plenty of suspense and action all the way through.

A man who has chosen to live away from the general public, alone in a wilderness area where intruders are few and far between when suddenly his quiet peaceful existence is disturbed loun noises, loud people, and gunshots not too far from his cabin in the woods. And when he discovers who they are, his life is now in jeopardy too. He manages to find a strong enough signal to put a single call in to the authorities for help, but with a heavy snowstorm bearing down on them all, to expect help to reach him in time might just be impossible.

This is a stand-alone story, full of suspense and excitement, and very well written. I loved it!
I should not be surprised by his talents. I have read his "Insects" trilogy and could not put it down once I started. One of the very few serials that I have actually read and never regretted doing so.

A bit short on details but entertaining just the same. Decent storyline, minimal character build up, but still a nice relaxing read. I think you will enjoy the time if you want to just kill some time.

Jacob had a hard time with his cheating wife with his brother he moved away to a deserted cabin bought the land built a new cabin and spent his life alone until one snowy winter day he noticed two suv outside a cabin across the frozen lake . His life would become in danger little did he know at that time a gang had taken over the cabin inside was one dead body and another bound to a chair . He noticed that the cars left so he decided to check out the cabin. He found the man tied to the chair and the dead person on the floor. He ran for help took his phone to higher ground to call 911jhe spoke to the emergency services and reported what he'd seen. The went back to his cabin where he noticed the door open and someone crawling out he rushed over the frozen lake to help layer on things got worse a police officer was killed and set alight in his patrol car. This has been well written keeping you wanting to read to see what happens to Jacob and the injured man . A n added man came to be rescued when he drove his snow plow down an embankment . There was everything to fight for what with gun fire brutal beating of an FBI agent. Explosion when a ticket was fire into the cabin. The only down side it ended abruptly you don't find out if all three people survives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping short read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 7, 2018
Read this for free and really enjoyed it, gripping fairly short read of good guy stumbles across very bad guys and is forced into action. He is not a secret agent with skills just a regular bloke who does what he can. That makes the story more compelling than if he was a retired SAS or Seal with combat skills. The only criticism is the ending is a bit to abrupt you find out the end in a couple of paragraphs, the story and character demands more than that, it needs an epilogue. Would read more by this author.
