After setup I went straight to breaking the saw in on a small project using Douglas Fir 2x4s. I made 27 cuts with miter and bevel at 0, and 18 cuts with miter at 45 and bevel at 0. I could not ask for anything more on accuracy or consistency, and the power was plentiful for every cut. The saw never bogged down a bit, not even on the 45 degree miter cuts. And thanks to the elastomer handle grip my hand felt comfortable throughout and never got sore. I also didn't notice any vibration, just smooth cuts for the duration. All the cuts were made using the stock Hitachi 24 tooth blade, which actually does a nice job. I'll probably put a Diablo 60 tooth on it tomorrow for another project, but the Hitachi blade actually left a pretty good finish.
One feature that concerned me based on the reviews is dust collection. Many claimed it hardly collects any dust in the bag and that a shop vacuum or dust collector didn't seem to help much either. I used the bag today just to test it out, and tomorrow I plan to hook it up to my shop vac with dust deputy. The bag wasn't as bad as I feared. I filled the bag completely and there was also a lot of dust on the ground, but had I stopped to empty the bag I believe it would have collected a lot more. I'd say it probably collects about 50%, which isn't great by any means but it's not terrible either imo. Most of the dust was within a couple feet from the saw and the vast majority was right behind it under the dust bag or on the saw. I can't say for sure but I believe my dust collector will collect significantly more than the bag.
I believe this saw is worthy of 5 stars based on performance, price, and the 5 year warranty. I would recommend this saw to anyone interested in a no-frills saw that is accurate, consistent, powerful, and portable. If a laser is an important feature you can either buy the laser model or get an aftermarket one for $10 or so.
The saw is light, a bit more than 20 pounds, and is pretty portable. It's not a large saw. Mine cuts 6 inches on the 90* and straight bevel, and a bit more than 4 inches on the 45* and straight bevel. I didn't try any compound cuts. The power is more than sufficient and I didn't experience any problems with the saw bogging down. The stock 24 tooth blade is fine for rough work like cutting 2x4's, but I put on a Freud 80 tooth blade for trim work and it cuts like glass with no fraying or blow out at the beginning and ends of the cut.
The saw fence was perfectly 90* to the table and the blade on delivery, and the 45* bevel was also spot on. I had to adjust the 90* bevel screw a half turn to get it perfectly to 90* to the table, however (using my Starrett combo square and a digital angle gage to verify square). Miters were right on. Be sure to check the bevel adjustments when you get the saw. After adjustment, the bevel indicator gage is now 1* to the left of 0* on the stop, but I can live with it (since I know 0* is when I hit the stop). The only other weird thing is that the screw actions seem to be counter to standard - turn the bevel handle counterclockwise to tighten, and turn the arbor screw counterclockwise to tighten, instead of "righty-tighty." Just remember to turn the other way before you start swearing at the saw.
This is a great saw, and you can't beat the price. Hitachi has a 5 year warranty, which is also stellar.
On first inspection there were no issues with the packing. The saw was undamaged, all saw parts were present, and aside from an annoying over-abundance of packing grease everything was as one would expect. Two tools were supposed to be included a 10 mm box wrench and a 4mm hex L wrench. I finally found the box wrench in its location on the back of the saw head a few weeks later but I've never found the L wrench. Possibly it has a special hidey-hole somewhere under the saw. Who knows? Since I have a reasonable tool set, I didnt need either to complete the saw setup.
The instructions need special mention. Hitachi is a large company. One would assume they had (at least) one person who spoke english working for them. Unfortunately, that one person or those people either never read these instructions, they failed to pass on their critique of the writing, or management just didnt care. Either way, they are the worst written set of instructions for a power tool that I've ever attempted to read (and that's saying something). Fortunately, there isn't much to actually setup and despite my concern over some adjustment I might have inadvertently failed to do, all went smoothly with the first trial start and cuts.
In terms of actual use, the saw has performed very well. The blade starts up and stops quickly and the cuts are clean and accurate. The only quirk is the "dust bag" which has only collected more than minimal amounts of sawdust only once and I have not been able to recreate that blessed event since that time. I've even attached a shop vac to the dust port instead of the bag and it still spews most fine dust from the sides of the blade rather than directly back into the port. Larger, curly, shavings do go backward but they tend to clog the port and have to be periodically removed by hand even with the obstruction in the dust port (mentioned in a previous review) forcibly removed.
One important point that I need to mention is that the saw only tilts in one direction. Depending on your needs that may or may not be a problem. In my case, it has meant some design changes.
About a month ago I added a laser guide that activates while the saw is spinning (see my other reviews for the exact one). Its installation was similar to changing a saw blade and that task was commendably easy with the aforementioned box wrench (now that I've found it) and gibberish instructions. The version of this saw equipped with the installed laser (which I'm assuming does not require saw rotation to activate) may be a slightly easier/better combination for some users than that which I'm using. However, I'm not sure its worth the extra 50 or so dollars for what is a good "entry level" saw.
Top reviews from other countries
Note that you will need to bolt this down: The center of gravity is to the rear and the saw is a bit unstable otherwise. I fixed mine to a piece of 3/4 plywood that gets clamped down when used, to make it easier to move the saw around when needed.
Lost a star for quality control issues: Assembly instructions are awful, spending more time telling you not to cut your fingers off than it does telling you how to assemble the thing. The "included" box wrench was missing. The blade guard assemble is a bit wobbly and there are no means to adjust this.
