This book explores many of the old county of Huntingdonshire's Ghosts, Myths and Legends. The book provides a comprehensive collection of ghost stories, along with a wealth of historical quirky local facts relating to the haunted locations.

In some instances the author was able to spend the night inside some of the haunted properties too. An honest and balanced account of what he experienced is featured within this book. With over 38 years of experience as a Paranormal Investigator the author provides help, advice, tips and guidelines to assist the paranormal investigator..

The book was first reviewed in September 2017 by Robert M Snow the former General Secretary of the world famous 'Ghost Club. The 'Ghost Club' was formed in 1862 and is the oldest psychical research establishment on the planet.. The author himself was trained by eminent former Ghost Club members Peter Underwood and Trevor Kenward (his Uncle), during the late 1970's.

The book boasts 20 chapters, contains 108K words and explores 55 different Huntingdonshire locations. The book also contains over 300 unique images and illustrations. Mark was born in Huntingdon on the 4th February 1961, he is 60 years old. The son of a bricklayer, Mark was raised in the small rural village of Southoe, which is situated between Huntingdon and St Neots in Cambridgeshire, England. Mark was educated at Southoe, Brampton and Hinchingbrooke School in Huntingdon. He spent the last 2 year's of his education studying at Hinchingbrooke House in Huntingdon which is featured on the books front cover. After leaving school in 1978 he then spent the first 25 years of his working career working for American chemical giants DuPont, working for DuPont in St Neots, Stevenage and also in Cambridge. Since then he has run his own business, and has also worked as an FDAP accredited Drug and Alcohol Worker within Cambridgeshire. Mark has two grown up children, a son named Matthew and a daughter named China, who both live locally in Huntingdonshire.

Mark first became interested in the paranormal following a personal experience which occurred way back in 1976. This experience was to have a profound effect on his life, and this is all fully explained within the book. Mark was only 15 years old at that time, and he has been fascinated by ghosts, apparitions and the paranormal ever since. The paranormal is a very broad subject, and Mark's particular area of interest is predominately Ghosts, Hauntings and Poltergeist phenomena. His early interest was encouraged by his late uncle Trevor Kenward, a long standing and highly respected member of the world famous 'Ghost Club.' The 'Ghost Club' is the oldest psychical research organisation in the world. Its roots date back to the early 1850's, but it was formerly founded at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1862. Former eminent members of the 'Ghost Club' include world famous authors Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle and the celebrated 'Hammer Horror' actor Peter Cushing, along with paranormal experts Harry Price and Peter Underwood. Peter Underwood was actually President of the 'Ghost Club' from 1960 intil 1992 and Peter was the cousin of Mark’s late uncle Trevor Kenward.

Mark was fortunate to receive tuition from his late uncle Trevor Kenward, and he was also privileged to meet and receive help and guidance from Peter Underwood, who was at that time, President of the 'Ghost Club'. For a lengthy period of time Trevor’s wife Marilyn (Mark's Aunt), was responsible for the 'Ghost Clubs' general finances and admin. Mark is now semi-retired and lives back in the village of Southoe, where he grew up. He's a very keen Sportsman and his other passions include reading, 'Classic Rock' music and a liking for traditional English Cider! Thanks to his late father Harold (a born and bred Liverpudlian), Mark is also a lifelong and passionate supporter of Liverpool Football Club.

I loved reading about an area that my family lived in when my father was at Alconbury AFB. We lived in Huntingdon and had several paranormal experiences ourselves. Thank you for a wonderful albeit chilling walk down memory lane!

Mark George Egerton has created an interesting book, The Haunted History of Huntingdonshire, which includes a touch of mystery with a historical basis. I thought it was a great read for a dark winter evening with a blanket to huddle under. Full Disclosure: I was allowed to read a copy of this book for free as a member of NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review. The opinions I have expressed are my own and I was not influenced to give a positive review.

3.5 stars

This was an interesting read despite coming across as rather disjointed.

The sections that were pure historical description were well executed and obviously the result of extensive research. These portions were reasonably academic in nature, giving an interesting and enjoyable third party account of the events described. However, the sections that were written from a first person perspective regarding the paranormal investigations themselves seemed to be as if written by another person. The language and construction was overly simplistic and did not mesh well with the general tone of the rest of the book.

Overall this was an interesting tour through the history and geography of Huntingdonshire, directly inspired by the paranormal events associated with this region.

This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher, provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in the paranormal history of this part of the UK. I spent a number of years in Huntingdonshire while growing up, and remember many of these tales and the locations very well. The author did a great job compiling all the local stories and legends together in the this book. Loads of great pics.

I was given this book as a gift as I love history and old houses in particular. I can't say I'm a believer in the supernatural and things that go bump in the night and was concerned that the book would lean towards trying to convince me that ghosts are real. Much to my surprised it did not. The book is a fascinating combination of history, personal experiences, historical research and paranormal investigations, presented honestly and with a touch of humour and allows the reader to draw their own conclusions.

Gripping accounts and brilliant social local history entwined in the pages of these stories. The ghosts themselves are slightly elusive, so left wanting more.
