During the winter, my room humidity is 23% if I don't use the humidifier. I would run the humidifier on High during the day and it would take a long time, but it would eventually increase the humidity by around 10%. And then I would turn the humidifier off at night because I figured my eyes won't get dry while sleeping since they are cold, it might be more humid and sticky in bed while I am sleeping if I leave it running (even on Low setting), and it would require me to refill the tank in the morning.
But I found that this is the wrong approach. It is better to just leave it running on Low the entire day, morning and night, and the humidity will actually increase more than 10% because the humidifier won't be off for 8-9 hours while I am sleeping and the room will stay consistently humid. I could run it on High during the day and Low at night, but then my apartment becomes way too humid. I'm using the humidifier in my living room, which is also my bedroom because that is where I sleep. So definitely do not turn the humidifier off at any part of the day. Try having it on Low the entire day. If that's not enough, then have it High during the day and Low at night. Since having it on Low the entire day is enough humidity for me, the added benefit is that I only have to fill the tank like twice a day. Very convenient.
Another thing that I want to mention is that this humidifier doesn't seem to make any white dust. I mean I get a tiny bit of white dust during the winter when I have this humidifier running the entire day, but the amount of dust is the same as I get in the fall when I'm not using the humidifier at all. So that's why I don't think this humidifier creates any white dust.
PREVIOUS REVIEW
Before I bought this Vicks warm mist humidifier, I was using a Honeywell evaporative humidifier. This Vicks humidifier is definitely better than the Honeywell evaporative one. And ages ago, I used a small ultrasonic cool mist humidifier. But I quit using the ultrasonic one because despite only holding 300 ml of water it left way too much white dust everywhere.
The Vicks warm mist humidifier holds one gallon of water just like the Honeywell evaporative humidifier did, but the overall unit seems around 1/5 the size which is really nice.
I feel that the Vicks warm mist humidifier goes through water a lot slower than the Honeywell evaporative humidifier so that's another great bonus. It means that I don't have to fill the water tank as often.
With the Honeywell evaporative humidifier, I had to take off the lid of the entire unit and carry a dripping filter to the sink with the water tank because the filter dried out so quickly. Even when I wet the filter five times a day, it was still dry. The filter became brittle and permanently damaged and it costs $10 per filter. Imagine having to replace the filter four times a month. The Honeywell water tank wasn't as easy or fun to carry and fill as the Vicks water tank it.
The Honeywell evaporative humidifier worked at first, but after 10 days it became useless and wouldn't even increase the humidity 1%.
The Vicks warm mist humidifier, on high setting, seems to increase the humidity of my living room by around 10% (minimum 7%).
I usually only need to fill up the tank once or twice during the day on the high setting. During the night, I usually turn it on low or turn it off. On low setting, I can leave it running for 9 hours and it won't even use half a tank. That's why a medium setting could be better since the low setting only increases my room humidity by 2-3%.
The Vicks warm mist humidifier might create white dust on my furniture, but very little (It's hard to tell because I get dust during the winter time even when I'm not using the humidifier). I'm not sure how much white dust it creates compared to the ultrasonic cool mist humidifiers because it has been so long since I used the ultrasonic one, but my guess is that it creates a lot less white dust. Not that much to worry about. Why? Well, for starters, the ultrasonic humidifier only held 300 ml of water instead of one gallon and it seemed to have created so much white dust that everything was white. But also, consider this. Minerals are what causes the white dust, right? Well, in the warm mist humidifier, a lot of the minerals never leave the humidifier and instead cake up on the warming unit and cooling chamber. So that means less minerals being deposited on furniture than ultrasonic humidifiers, since some minerals are left inside the humidifier.
The essential oils tray is nice. I can smell the oils around three feet away. I haven't tested it to see if I can smell it further away.
Cleaning the Vicks warm mist humidifier is actually easy. The caked up minerals fall of pretty easily. I was able to get the caked on minerals that were stuck on the warming unit off in only a couple of minutes instead of the recommended 20 minute vinegar soak.
The Vicks warm mist humidifier has a really long cord which is nice.
So, to sum it up... The Vicks warm mist humidifier provides a good amount of humidity on high settings. The smaller the room, the more impact it might have. It doesn't require a filter. It's easy to refill. You don't have to fill the water tank up as often as the Honeywell evaporative humidifier I used. It's easy to clean. It might create a little white dust, but wayyyyyyyyy less than ultrasonic humidifiers. And it's a lot cheaper than other humidifiers so you could probably buy two or three for the same price.
Evaporative humidifiers move air over water, usually with an absorbing "wick" or spinning disks, for an accelerated version of the natural evaporation process. Electricity is used only to run a fan or other rotating element, so evaporative humidifiers are the cheapest to run. The physics of evaporation lead to two qualities: They are self regulating, as the water will cease evaporating once the air is saturated, and they have a slight cooling effect. The rate of humidity pumped out is relatively low. The wicking medium - usually a corrugated paper or paper/cloth material - can harbor mold, so you must change the water regularly and avoid letting the water stand around. The fans vary in noise level. Example: Vornado Whole-Room Evaporative Humidifier, HU1-0021-28
Ultrasonic humidifiers use a membrane vibrating at high frequency to atomize water molecules. The vapor output is high and the machines are the quietest of all humidifiers. Their energy usage is middle-of-road: more than evaporatives, and less than steam-based. The main drawback of ultrasonics is that the vibrating membrane atomizes not just water, but also anything else in the water - microorganisms, and particularly minerals, which may appear as a "white dust". This is a big con for allergy sufferers, so many units include replaceable demineralization cartridges and water filters to eliminate microorganisms and minerals before they get atomized. You can use keep replacing these cartridges, or keep buying distilled water, making ultrasonics rather costly. The vapor will be the temperature of the water - which is to say cool, unless you choose a unit with a heating element. Example: SPT SU-4010 Ultrasonic Dual-Mist Warm/Cool Humidifier with Ion Exchange Filter
Steam humidifiers heat water to the boiling point until they, well, boil and produce water vapor. Any microorganisms will be killed, and any minerals are left behind in the water reservoir, making steam humidifiers excellent for allergy sufferers. The left-behind minerals can be significant if your water is dirty, so these units must be cleaned regularly (rinsed out every couple days, and a vinegar soak one a week). Alternatively, you can use distilled water. Energy use on steam humidifiers is highest, usually around 200-300 watts, as they must heat the water. The vapor coming out will be hot - good for winter colds and flus, but also a small concern for those with small children.
Impellers are kind of a cross between evaporatives and ultrasonics. They pass water at high speed through the air, making them similar to evaporatives, but they do so with enough mechanical force that other particles are atomized as well, imparting the same problems of white dust and microorganisms. Example: Sunbeam Health 645-800 Cool Mist Humidifier
I needed strong humidification, so it was a choice between steam and ultrasonics. I was wary of the ultrasonics because I would have to live with white dust, or keep buying either cleaning cartridges or distilled water. They also tend to be the costliest humidifiers. So I chose this ~$30 Vicks steam humidifier, which does the job well and produces plenty of clean vapor. My water is pretty dirty and an unsightly crust builds on the heating element after a few days of constant use, but I'm glad it's in there and not in my lungs. The water volume is on the small size, but this has the advantage of being damage control when/if it springs a leak someday.
Another category to consider, by the way, are air washers, which usually combine an impeller design with electrolysis of water to both clean and humidify air. The humidification level is similar to evaporative and impeller designs, so they weren't for me. Example: Sanyo ABC-VW24 Air Washer Air Purification System with Electrolyzed Water Technology
