Amazon.com

Combining an area light with four portable lanterns in a single clever unit, the Coleman LED Quad lantern is a versatile choice for indoor or outdoor use. The Quad is equipped with four removable LED panels that hold 24 LED lights total. Users can remove any of the four panels and use them independently, such as when needing a portable light for the bathroom or tent, or they can keep all four attached to the lantern and produce 190 total lumens of light. As a result, the Quad is the perfect light for group camping trips and any other occasion where folks might splinter off into smaller groups during the night. Each of the panels is a fully functioning light, with six 5mm white LEDs, a rechargeable NiMH battery, an independent on/off switch, and a top handle for carrying or hanging. The NiMH battery--which recharges when stored in the lantern base--provides up to 1.5 hours of light on its own. The lantern base, meanwhile, requires eight D-cell batteries (not included), which provide an approximate run time of 75 hours for the entire lantern. Other features include a main on/off switch located on top of the lantern, a light range of 26 feet, and a limited five-year warranty.

About Coleman
More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.

In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

Great Camping LED Lantern

Great Camping LED Lantern
I bought this lantern as well as the Black Diamond (BD) Titan. Both lanterns are well built. The BD Titan is rated at 250 lumens and the Coleman Quad at 190. I have to say the Coleman beats the BD hands down for light output even though it's lumen output is rated lower. It could be the extra 4 batteries the coleman takes compared to the 4 the BD use. I think the LEDs in the coleman are arranged to give out the biggest output of light and works great. The BD uses refactors and the light it gives off is concentrated at a certain angle it doesn't disperse the light evenly. I was really disappointed with this especially since it was rated at 250 lumens and I like the more compact size. But I will be keeping the coleman - it's brighter and disperses the light much much better then the BD. Nice that you can take off the individual light panels. It is a little heavy with the 8 d cell batteries but then you're not going to be lugging it all around the place. A great addition to anybodys camp gear.

We use ours to go camping. It’s so nice to be able to take one panel off when we need to. Night time potty trips are a breeze with one of these panels. It’s plenty bright. It’s also easy to hang this in a tent due to the handles.

After losing power for over 3 days during hurricane Irene this past summer, I decided to start looking around for a high-quality emergency lighting solution. We have 2 small children at home, and don't yet have a generator, so a reliable emergency light source is a must. Most of the models on the market aren't up to the job -- poor quality, poor battery life, poor design, etc. This one is definitely the best that I've found -- each of the 4 light panels are removable and function as stand-alone units, powered by built-in rechargeable batteries in each panel. When connected to the base, their batteries are automatically recharged by the 8 D cells in the base, which powers the base when all 4 are lit. I installed high capacity NiMH rechargeable batteries in the base, which I will top-off every month. The panels used high output, high efficiency LEDs, which put out A LOT of light. Recommended.

** update 11/01/2012 **
I am updating this review after suffering the aftermath of hurricane Sandy. We got hit hard in Long Island, NY, and were without power for 4 days. I topped-off the rechargeable batteries that I keep in the base unit prior to the storm arriving, and this little gem provided light for my entire family for 4 days, without coming close to exhausting the batteries. Each panel puts out enough light for an entire room, and can be recharged by returning to the base. Never in the 4 days of constant use did any of the individual panels run out of power before being recharged at bedtime. I can't recommend this unit enough -- it has already paid for itself in terms of safety, peace of mind, and quality of life provided.

I had purchased this lantern for my husband for Father's Day. The other night, a DOT truck hit a pole in our neighborhood, and our lights were out for almost six hours. We had already placed the batteries in the lantern and decided to try it out. All I can say is WOW! What a light! Seriously, this is the absolute best lantern that I have ever seen. It puts out a REALLY bright light, and the four detachable flashlights are so bright, that you could set each in a different room and light up your house. We were so impressed with this lantern, that we have already bought another one, and then purchased two of the new rechargeable Coleman Lanterns with two detachable flashlights. I will give one to my mother in case of a power outage. If you purchase the new rechargeable Lantern with two detachable flashlights, you have to purchase the charger separately. We paid $19.95 on Amazon for our charger.

I would highly recommend these as a gift for your family or friends. These are excellent birthday, Father's Day or even Christmas gifts. It's a little heavy, but not too heavy. This would be great for camping or taking on a trip. One night, we were staying in a hotel and there was a heavy thunderstorm, and the hotel had a power outage for several hours. This would have been great because we were traveling by car. This would also be very nice for senior citizens because it really lights up a house. A family of four could each take the detachable flashlight and be able to see in a dark house. Also, if you're on the road a lot and your car breaks down at night, this would be really handy.

I lived in Florida for six years, and was there during the terrible 2004 - 2005 hurricane season and can tell you firsthand, don't be without at least one good lantern, some batteries, candles and canned goods. Storms in Florida can be really bad and you can sit in the dark for quite a while. Coleman has a winner with this lantern! I have checked other places, but Amazon continues to have the absolute best price on these lanterns.

This is the first review I've ever written on any products purchased thusfar. I originally purchased the 1st Coleman Quad Lantern after Hurricane Irene in August 2011 (wherein, we lost power for 6 days). It is not fun to live on candles and flashlights. I regret not having purchased this item any earlier. I used this during Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 (we lost power for only 1/2 day). The brightness from the lantern base and off (on its' 4 individual panels) is amazing. Looking in from the street, it looks like the house has electricity. You can take the panels to each room and still have more than adequate lighting. I love the fact that the light is not glaringly-shining at you. I agree w/ all the other reviews that it is hard to screw the cover on properly when the batteries are inserted. I place the handle end on a hard surface while I screw on the base. A word of advice: ensure that the batteries are inserted when you are expecting heavy winds, stormy, or Hurricane conditions. This way, you will not be fidigting w/ the flashlight in the dark! The lantern is indeed heavy, after 8 Size D cell batteries are placed in the base. Make sure you do not carry it on the 4 quad panels, but with the recessed handle. Do not pull out the individual panels without first pressing the button on the panel to release it properly. Otherwise, you will be looking at a triple, not quad lantern. The red color of the lantern is very pleasing to the eye! I was so happy w/ my first purchase at Cotsco that I bought a second from Amazon a week before Hurricane Sandy hit NY. However, due to weather conditions, the product did not arrive until the 3rd or 4th day, aftermath Sandy. This product is well worth its weight in gold, whether you purchase it at $79.99 or a lower price. You will not regret it; just purchase it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bright and lasts for long
Reviewed in Canada on January 2, 2014
I bought this light as an emergency light source for my cottage... And it works really well. This Christmas we had three outages more then 20 hours each - use it all dark time on one batteries load. Detachable panels are very convenient - it is always possible to take piece of light from central source with you as well as detach one or more and shut off if bright light is not required. Each panel produces bright wide spread light - not like a narrow spot flash light. This lantern works really good for my purpose - to have stationary long lasting source of light.

Be noticed this lantern uses 8 D type batteries so it is quite heavy
The battery insertion process to the base is not simple because of thin plastic of large diameter bottom cover
Four handles of detachable pads looks very convenient to use them to move entire lantern - don't do this! Panel may accidentally be detached. The only small round handle at the middle of the light's top supposes to be used for lifting of lantern

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a CPX Lantern
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 12, 2013
When i go camping I take a solar panel and a leisure battery because i like all my 'gadgets' to be 12v rechargeable. Not to save the planet from endless battery landfill (lets face it we are all gonna get eaten by Zombies long before the ozone layer depletes) but because i am extreamly tight and batteries are exspensive.

I looked in great detail at the CPX Dual lantern and was quite impressed by most of the reviews apart from the odd tyre kicker ( Lets face it it's a lantern it's not gonna change your life). When i saw there was a quad version i assumed that 'bigger was better' and ordered it not reading all the reviews (my fault i know) and assuming it would also be a CPX lantern.

I was wrong!

However as i was bemoning my stupidity i decided to buy 8 unbranded D type batteries from Home Bargains at a reasonable price of £2.60 and see if the lantern could live up to its boasted 75hr runtime.

14 Hrs later it is still going strong (i'll let you know when it dies).

30hrs itck tock tick tock. About half as bright when used as an area lantern. Panels are still fully bright when detatched.

48hrs and the area lantern still emits a reduced glow but the panels are fully charged if detatached.

I'm impressed!

I may even keep it lol
