Typically my backpacking products work, year in, year out. It’s rare an item fails on me. The steripen is the exception. I bought it a little over two years ago for a Na Pali coast backpacking trip. It worked for that trip.Put it away in my backpacking tote, in its protective case, and pulled it out this summer for a Redwoods backpacking trip. I charged it before putting it in the pack, but didn’t inspect the tip, because why would i? It’s been in its protective case since i put it away. Bummer. Took it out miles from nowhere to discover the end had broken off, exposing the UV rod inside. It stopped working a day into the trip, effectively cutting the trip short.I looked for a return policy, or some kind of warranty to no avail. I guess i know why now. Poorly constructed and WAY too expensive for what i got out of it. 8,000 uses? Try less than 50. I will NOT be recommending this product to anyone. No customer service, no option for replacement, nothing. Steripen, where are you as a company? Where are your ethics? I will be petitioning REI to reconsider carrying this product.

(Problem below) I recently went to Peru on a study abroad trip and this gave me confidence when drinking water. (I also now use it on US water. It is scary what is still in the water we drink in the US and this may not help much with our problems, but it makes me feel better :/ ) I took Typhoid pills to avoid any food-related problems, but having this for drinking water, tooth brush water, or even a little water to wash your face, is key. I absolutely loved it and, as I was on a trip of almost 30 students where almost all of them had a SteriPen of almost all the different makes and sizes, I really love this specific style (Ultra). The super small one I remember was hard to put in some containers and because the light could only penetrate so deep, they didn't feel as secure as I did.

***The only problem I did have was it not working occasionally. It's strange, but sometimes I would try to purify water (by the rules) several times, and it would never work. I had to borrow other people's SteriPens, because I thought mine was broke! Another student with the same model (Ultra) found that hers did the same and that the only way to make it work was to run it under cold water, then put it back in the glass/cup/bottle. Quite annoying*** ALL OTHER MODELS OF THE STERIPEN WORKED PERFECTLY!

I chose this (after doing thorough research on all the models), because I liked that it was USB run and didn't need batteries which frankly causes a lot of waste in our world. However, it's inability to always work is a serious problem. I don't want to scare people from running away from this make and certainly not the SteriPen in general, but its good to know. Also, NO other make or model of the SteriPen had ANY problems. The only issue I had is isolated to the Ultra model. ALL OTHER MODELS WORK PERFECTLY!!!

First and foremost, I am excited to have a lightweight water treatment solution for backcountry endeavors. After a few years of hesitating I sucked it up and purchased one that seemed like a proper compromise between weight and battery life (the main dichotomy with Steripens).

Unfortunately, the first one delivered had an electronic problem of some sort. The visual interface was damaged in some way and it would not charge or turn on when charged. Luckily Amazon's replacement policy is easy to use and I had a replacement within days (they actually shipped it One Day like I originally had). I postponed an early season hiking trip because of the issue but I also have a lot of leeway in timing my trips.

The replacement arrived in great packaging and worked as its supposed to. My guess is I will not have any further issues from here on out and will likely be extremely happy with my purchase. The downside is that the original flawed item has left me skeptical and concerned about backcountry travel. I will likely carry a small bleach dropper with me as a backup until I gain complete confidence.

Why I bought it:

1) Lighter solution than my current filter/pump. I have 2 pumps that range in weight from 12 ounces to 1 pound in real packed weight. Both are bulky and relatively heavy for the solo trips I often do. The Ultra weighs 4.7 ounces on my scale (5.7 with neoprene case if desired) and is roughly 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the pumps. That is half the weight of my normal options.

2) Non-chemical: Ultralight hikers have gone to chlorine-dioxide treatments. While they are deemed safe for human consumption I prefer not to add other chemicals to my life and diet.

3) Quick: a half liter takes 48 seconds and 1 liter treatment takes 1.5 minutes. Thats a little quicker than my pump and a huge decrease in time for chemicals (which take 20-30 minutes to 4 hours) to kill protozoas that I would really like to avoid.

4) Ultra Battery: has enough battery life between charges, 50 liters, for 95% of my adventures. Its a perfect solution for 3-4 day trips with my wife and friends or the 1-2 week long trips I do solo. I prefer reducing my use of disposable batteries and the models that take rechargeable external batteries compromise the # of treatments available. And for $10 Steripen will replace the internal battery when it finally bites the bullet (plus shipping I here).

5) Overall cost: Much cheaper then both chemicals and pumps. The UV bulb last 5-10 times longer than the micro filter which cost around $40 a pop to replace.

Cons:

1) Limited duration of use: The Ultra's internal battery only last 50 liters which doesn't not suit all trips.

2) Electronic/computerized: not field repairable and can go dead at any moment. Disconcerting but I can always boil my water if need be. At some point it will die though and add to the electronic waste of this country. Overall though I think it will provide a smaller footprint then the other solutions.

Best of luck out there and I will update if I discover any different benefits or run into any other problems.

Would be a 5 star rating if the first unit had not be flawed.

Unseres hat schon ein paar Hektoliter Drittweltplörre unschädlich gemacht. Keine Probleme mit Haltbarkeit, Funktion, Akku. Natürlich kann man damit Schwermetalle, Fluorid, Pestizide, Meersalz, etc. nicht aus dem Wasser entfernen, es geht hier nur darum, Lebendes zu töten. Das mache ich jetzt aber auch täglich, während ich den Katadyn Wasserfilter noch nicht ein einziges Mal benutzt habe.

Nous l’avons utilisé à de nombreuses reprises pour boire l’eau des ruisseaux dans des campagnes riches en élevage.
Il s’est avérée extrêmement pratique avec ma gourde à larfe goulot, achetée sur Amazon (en titane, 1100 ml et avec sacoche). C’est un super combo. J’utilisais un textile pour filtrer les impuretés puis sterilisais l’eau dans la gourdes.
Avec les gourdes classiques à goulot étroit ou les casseroles trop peu profondes, c’était un peu la galère: je n’avais pas assez d’amplitude pour remuer oublient les électrodes de détection ne touchaient pas assez l’eau. Dans ces cas-là, le steripen arrête le processus de décontamination par sécurité; ce qui est très bien.
Bref, j’ai toute confiance dans cet objet que je recommande.
