I could easily write a book about the many great things about ESO but I will try to keep it simple with a quick Pros and Cons list! ~Keep in mind, I play it on console.
~Keep in mind, I'm new to ESO. This review is more aimed towards ESO as a whole~
Pros:
- Music and dialogue. I've truly never heard superb voice-acting in any MMO like I have in ESO. And there's massive amounts of it! (even celebrity voices)
- LORE. You will be hooked to this lore, no matter if you're new to ES or not. The amount of detail that went into side quests is stunning, each quest is epic in its own way.
- Scenery is breathtaking. The creativity of the devs is wild, every zone is so detailed and each feels like a different game!
- Crafting! Blown away with how compelling it is. It might be grindy but I have enjoyed every step so far.
- Customization. There's an indepth dye station, unlock new colors by completing achievements. Character customization is complex. (NOTE: DYE STATION UNLOCKED BY ESO+, SEE IN CONS LIST)
- Class/Skills. So many combos to choose from, each unique.
- Graphics are good, not as good as the PC version though. Still makes for a nice view, either platform.
- ALWAYS SOMETHING TO DO. There's always a goal because there's never a main goal. This is why I love MMOs in general, but ESO is special...it feels like the amount of content in this game is invaluable. Trust me, I could keep going on the Pros list lol but I won't.
Cons:
- Dang, I wish I had unlimited cash. There are so many awesome things I want on the crown store(in-game, real money store). I'd be broke if I bought everything I wanted. In my opinion, it is NOT pay to win. As far as it goes is experience scrolls. There should be more free-to-obtain mounts/pets/etc.
- Lack of settings. On console, at least. Even the audio settings are skewered. IE dialogue 1on1 is too quiet but open dialogue is too loud...but there's only 1 slider.
- Buggy. This game will blow you away one minute, the next you feel like you're playing beta. They've worked out many kinks since release but you'll find some frustrating bugs.
- Quality of life is missing. No minimap, no detailed inspection of players, no class emblem when hovering over players, no search feature on guild store(AH of ESO). The QoL improvements list doesn't end.
- Bagspace. Managing bagspace in ESO is pitiful, until you get a crafting bag.
- Crafting Bag. While it's great to have, it's not great obtaining it. You must subscribe monthly to have a crafting bag, without it- gathering materials is a thousand times harder.
- ESO plus. $15 a month, not including console monthly fees. It's a Con for most, it's a Pro for me. I paid 15/month for years with other MMOs so I don't mind it, the reason being is because you get a lot of goodies(which you wouldn't in other games). IE: Monthly Crowns to buy in-game store goodies, mounts pets costumes etc. 10% bonus XP, crafting bag, dye station and ALL DLCS! It might suck paying for what you thought was a free game, but at least you get all the goodies in return.
- Level 1s begin in the expansion. I didn't know any better so I finished Morrowind firstz even though I didn't prefer to. I am liking Tamriel Unlimited much more than Morrowind, but they're both fun.
Well. That was longer than I thought...
Anywho, pick this game up!
I don't understand why I still hear bad things about this game from people. I can't help but think they haven't played it since launch.
(Not specific to Morrowind but TSO as a whole.)
The only reason I am giving four stars instead of five: I bought this as a gift from Santa to our whole family (2 adults, four children), as we all love elder scrolls and gaming in general. As such, we all have our own profiles on the PS4, and I thought we would be able to each play morrowind on our individual profiles, but that is not the case. The game comes with one code for Morrowind, redeemable only on one profile. I may just not have read properly before buying, and if so, that's all on me, but it was quite a disappointment at first. The good thing is that you can have up to 8 characters on one profile, so we will still be able to play the expansion, and every other profile can play the base game no problem.
I say exactly since you do go through Morrowind in a different era and you can see that the intro to the region is the same. LOL Except you aren't a prisoner this time. Nice little addition.
Other than some characters and locales, this is 100% an MMO and an expansion to The Elder Scrolls Online.
I honestly wasn't hooked with TESO in its vanilla release no matter how much I tried, but for some reason, I'm enjoying this expansion and the updates they've done since. Perhaps, it's also the new class, Warden, that drew me in. This class uses nature, animals, healing and some spells to pretty much be a druid class. I'm so into that combination. My new character is an Archer Druid type character, so it's cool.
Another interesting point is your adventure hook. Unlike in the vanilla game where you were someone who was killed and taken to purgatory (pretty much) to slave away for all eternity and then escape back to the world and help a prophet figure out a way to kill a powerful evil god (which is still doable), Morrowind starts a little more subtle and you can choose to attempt that over the top campaign anytime by taking a boat to any part of the world outside of Morrowind.
This new start helps make the story relatable by starting simpler and building up from there.
The game is totally solo-friendly, I play solo for the most part. It feels like Skyrim and it doesn't due to many MMO features that are mostly obvious is random other heroes jumping around and the mechanics of combat. Combat is fundamentally turn based. Cooldowns, casting and hit boxes. Even if you dodge, most of the time, you'll still get hit.
Biggest wish was that this game was more open world multiplayer action RPG than MMO, but it's good for what it is. :)
PRO TIP: Research what you are pre-ordering or buying before they ship so you don't feel cheated that you didn't get a remake of an ancient classic. :P
