StellarScopes and planispheres are not really toys in that they have no play value. However, they definitely are useful aids to learning to recognize important features of the night sky as it changes throughout the year, and are suitable for beginning observers at any age. Some clever teachers have their students make their own simple planispheres with custom features emphasizing different aspects of the night sky.
