addendum 2023: I have made a few adjustments and upgraded to this guitar and now it is not too far off par with a genuine telecaster. I changed out the pickups to a set of Dimarzio's and that really improved the tone. I put Fender locking tuners on it and some brass saddles. I also put a 1950's style pick guard with 5 screws instead of 8 and think it looks pretty cool. I also put a round string tree to make it old style and a genuine Fender Coronado CA neck plate. I also plan to change the controls to a better them. The controls that come with the guitar are pretty cheap and have wires about as thick as a frog's hair. But the guitar now is close to a real tele. The Chinese tele affinity is a pretty good guitar for the money and going up, up in price. I paid $219 and they now 4 years later sell for $289. I recently got an email from another guitar seller stating all Fender products will soon be increasing in price. Get one before they go up even more.
Well, I never got the American Standard. I put a nicer set up pickups in this one, and this is what I play. Here's the thing, I think, with these guitars -- one of the main things separating it from more expensive fare is that they are mass produced in China and almost NO time and care is put into setup. But if you are willing to buy a few tools and spend some time on the internet (and a LOT of time with the guitar), or are willing to pay $30 or so for a music store setup, you will end up with a wonderfully playable guitar, and like me, will not lust after a fancier "real" Fender.
The maple neck is the C-Shape (and I would bet a lot, from feel, that it is the same neck they use on the Mexican-made Fenders, just with a different decal). My frets took a little bit of dressing with a fret file, but they are easy to play and bends are easy because they are jumbo. The tuners really hold nicely.
The bridge and truss rod are what took the most adjusting, but once that was taken care of, it played like a dream. If you are getting this for or as a beginner, take it to the music store to get it set up. It should not cost much. If you are more experienced with guitars, you may want to do it yourself, but either way, if you're willing to put in the time and effort, you will have something every bit as good as a "real" Fender at a fraction of the price.
One note about the body. It is alder wood, like the American Standard, but is in five pieces rather than three. For that, I still found it had great resonance (you can tell this by playing an electric unplugged). Being a female and slightly small, I appreciate that it is a quarter inch thinner (and therefore lighter) than the regular Fenders, so if you are buying it for a kid, or a smaller person, this is a real plus.
If you have questions, I'd be happy to answer them, or you can look at some of the other reviews here, which are really good. For the money, this is a really excellent guitar, and that would actually be at three times the price. I've played mine for a year now, and wouldn't replace it with something pricier. I did buy it some new pickups for Christmas, but the old ones it came with were fine; it was just a bit unbalanced -- the bridge pickup was much louder than the neck pickup. Also, the only other issue was that the tone knob doesn't really do anything. I suspect it's just wired backwards. ;) All of these things are easily and cheaply fixed if they bother you.
A solid guitar -- you will be really happy with it, especially if it is your first electric, or one you will be learning on. If you do upgrade to a more expensive guitar, I'll bet you keep this one, also.
