This innovative kit contains over 30 color-coded, real circuit components that snap together to create working electronic circuits and devices. Recommended for children 8 and older, this set offers 101 do-it-yourself projects that will give your child an entertaining, concrete education on how electronics work.

Create Working Electronic Circuits
Snap Circuits comes with over 30 pieces to create 101 different electronic projects. The pieces, which include snap wires, slide switches, an alarm circuit, a music integrated circuit, and a speaker, snap together easily on the included plastic grid--no soldering required. Each piece is numbered and color-coded to make identifying them easy. These components combine to create working circuit boards just like the ones found inside televisions, radios, and other electronic devices.

Simple, Fun Projects Let Kids Learn While They Play
With its easy-to-follow instructions, Snap Circuits gives your child a hands-on education in how electrical circuits work to run the everyday devices that they're familiar with. They'll also gain valuable lessons in building and in following instructions. The project manual includes large color illustrations and simple directions for each project.

The projects include a sound-activated switch, a musical doorbell, a voice-controlled lamp, a flying saucer, and a light police siren. With these projects, children will experiment with things like electric switches, integrated circuits, digital circuits, fuses, and the transformation of circuit sounds into other sounds.

Grow as You Go
Because the projects are arranged in order of complexity, kids can build on their skills as they progress through the manual. The lessons start out with a simple electric light and switch project that demonstrates how electricity is turned on and off with a switch. Further along, kids can put together a two-speed fan, create clap-controlled sounds, and more.

Design Your Own Circuits and Upgrade Your Kit
Once children have mastered several of the techniques introduced in this kit, they can use the components to experiment and create their own customized circuits and electronic devices. The Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 can also be upgraded to the Snap Circuits SC-300, Snap Circuits Pro, or Snap Circuits Extreme with the purchase of a UC-30, UC-40, UC-60 upgrade kits, respectively. Kids will enjoy additional parts, manuals, and projects that'll take their kit--and their fun--to the next level.

Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 requires two AA batteries, which are not included.

First, yes I know this set says it's for ages 8-108. However, my 4-year old is OBSESSED with electronics and kept trying to play with my arduino stuff. This seemed like a safer option, so I purchased it for them and will be reviewing this from that perspective, should you have a similarly ambitious preschooler that is no longer satisfied with Code-a-pillar.Pros:* Physical form - this is perfect for little hands. Check out my photo of the resistor, with a regular size coffee mug for scale. The snaps can be a little "sticky" which sometimes presents a challenge but not a biggie. My kid definitely needed my help getting pieces apart sometimes, but putting pieces on was pretty easy for them.* Quick-win projects - being able to light up a light or make a fan go with relatively low effort was a big plus.* Modular - love that we can get more of these kits and combine them. There's also a pretty active community creating new projects, so google "snap circuit builds" if you run out of projects and want to see some more cool stuff you can do.Cons:* Why are so many of these projects "war" and "bombing" and "battle"? This was honestly the biggest turn-off of this kit for me. Like can we just not? Can we just build some cool stuff?* Instructions are definitely for bigger kids. See my photos - this is not a fault of the product. They're clear, and good illustrations, but my kid isn't yet advanced enough to really understand the differences between all the numbers in the image - so they didn't really get that there's an order of operations. With me helping they got it, but particularly for the more complex projects, I basically had to build it -- which I had expected, but hopefully the images here will give you an idea of what you are dealing with so you can decide if you're up for it.* Mostly loud sounds and lights. This was my own fault for not looking more closely at what was in this set, so this might be a *pro* for you. For my loud-noise-hating kid, this was a bit of a con as they really wanted more projects involving motion.* A lot of projects with subtle differences - I hesitate to call this a con because I think it's super cool that they show things like say, what an AND entails vs an OR, but the distinctions are too subtle for my kid to care. That said when kiddo gets a little older I suspect this set will get some new life as they begin to realize what these other projects are teaching. All in all I still give this 5 stars because it's a great product for getting kids into electronics and we'll definitely get a lot of life out of this. And, let's be real, I am enjoying it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely captivating – this was a big hit this Christmas!
Reviewed in Canada on December 26, 2017
This turned out to be a fantastic gift – our 7-year-old nephew opened this gift on Christmas Eve and absolutely loved the snap circuit projects. He’d finish one, get excited about the results (lights, fans, music, siren, etc.) and want to move on to the next project immediately. It’s a wonderful contraption for cultivating reading and comprehension skills (following detailed instructions), dexterity, patience, and even for building self-confidence. If he missed any components during assembly, the resulting structure wouldn’t respond as expected – so ‘back to the drawing board’ until he achieved the expected effect.

We were surprised at how our nephew was immediately drawn into the circuit board tasks – he was so enthusiastic and genuinely excited to build something that lit up, powered a fan or light, or triggered a siren. He said it was “awesome!” but more importantly he showed it was awesome by completing ten or eleven projects in a row, immediately after opening it.

I would recommend that you don’t just leave a child to figure it out alone, when it’s first opened. I attribute some of our nephew’s excitement to the fact that his uncle spent a good twenty minutes with him guiding him through the initial projects to ensure his success. It really just fueled his enthusiasm and then he happily worked independently and was thrilled to show off the results of each project.

The Elenco snap circuits are truly captivating; they are entertaining while offering a unique learning experience. A couple hours after opening it, our nephew matter-of-factly said, ‘I’ll probably be an electronics engineer when I grow up” and then he proceeded to explain how he thought he could use electronics to work in a bank…. so it definitely fired up his imagination in addition to stretching his attention span. With these results, it’s easy to highly recommend the Elenco Snap Circuits.

Tip: Two AA batteries are required and not included; so if you're gifting this, I'd recommend opening the box and including the batteries so it can be enjoyed as soon as it's opened.
