Hillary Rodham Clinton’s inside account of the crises, choices, and challenges she faced during her four years as America’s 67th Secretary of State, and how those experiences drive her view of the future.

“All of us face hard choices in our lives,” Hillary Rodham Clinton writes at the start of this personal chronicle of years at the center of world events. “Life is about making such choices. Our choices and how we handle them shape the people we become.”

In the aftermath of her 2008 presidential run, she expected to return to representing New York in the United States Senate. To her surprise, her former rival for the Democratic Party nomination, newly elected President Barack Obama, asked her to serve in his administration as Secretary of State. This memoir is the story of the four extraordinary and historic years that followed, and the hard choices that she and her colleagues confronted.

Secretary Clinton and President Obama had to decide how to repair fractured alliances, wind down two wars, and address a global financial crisis. They faced a rising competitor in China, growing threats from Iran and North Korea, and revolutions across the Middle East. Along the way, they grappled with some of the toughest dilemmas of US foreign policy, especially the decision to send Americans into harm’s way, from Afghanistan to Libya to the hunt for Osama bin Laden.

By the end of her tenure, Secretary Clinton had visited 112 countries, traveled nearly one million miles, and gained a truly global perspective on many of the major trends reshaping the landscape of the twenty-first century, from economic inequality to climate change to revolutions in energy, communications, and health. Drawing on conversations with numerous leaders and experts, Secretary Clinton offers her views on what it will take for the United States to compete and thrive in an interdependent world. She makes a passionate case for human rights and the full participation in society of women, youth, and LGBT people. An astute eyewitness to decades of social change, she distinguishes the trendlines from the headlines and describes the progress occurring throughout the world, day after day.

Secretary Clinton’s descriptions of diplomatic conversations at the highest levels offer readers a master class in international relations, as does her analysis of how we can best use “smart power” to deliver security and prosperity in a rapidly changing world—one in which America remains the indispensable nation.

Review

A subtle, finely calibrated work….Hard Choices is a statesmanlike document…with succinct and often shrewd appraisals of the complex web of political, economic and historical forces in play around the world, and the difficulties American leaders face in balancing strategic concerns with ‘core values.’ The tone is calm and measured, with occasional humorous asides, like describing an offer by Vladimir V. Putin, the Russian leader, to take Bill Clinton along on a polar-bear tagging expedition. -- Michiko Kakutani ― The New York Times

[A] clear and at times riveting account of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s four years as secretary of state….The book bolsters her reputation as a strong “representational” diplomat who carried the flag to 112 countries. But the meaty middle of
Hard Choices does something more than chronicle the frequent-flier miles: It provides evidence that Clinton displayed good judgment as secretary of state and understood some important issues earlier than her boss, President Obama…..[O]nce Clinton gets rolling, she does what’s most valuable in this kind of memoir, which is to take readers inside her meetings — sketching portraits of the world leaders with whom she did business…..Perhaps the most revelatory passages in the book involve the secret diplomacy that led to the November 2013 interim nuclear agreement with Iran. -- David Ignatius ― The Washington Post

Hard Choices is a richly detailed and compelling chronicle of Clinton's role in the foreign initiatives and crises that defined the first term of the Obama administration — the pivot to Asia, the Afghanistan surge of 2009, the ‘reset’ with Russia, the Arab Spring, the ‘wicked problem’ of Syria — told from the point of view of a policy wonk… it's also mercifully free of the bromides that mar most campaign biographies. The book teems with small, entertaining details about her interactions with foreign leaders. ― Los Angeles Times

“To its credit, Clinton’s memoir is serious, sober and substantive….No fair-minded reader could finish this book and doubt Clinton’s essential command of the issues, whatever one might think of her solutions for them. She roams widely and delves into war and peace, terrorism and Russia, economic development and women’s rights. She knows the players and the history.” -- Peter Baker ―
New York Times Book Review

“An amazing story….Above all, what comes through is Clinton's sheer persistence. This is how she does politics, by keeping going and totting up the small victories so that they outweigh the defeats.” ―
The Guardian

“Enjoy
Hard Choices for what it is at its best — a rich and lively narrative of Clinton's foreign policy successes, and failures.” ― Entertainment Weekly

“Undeniable depth.” ―
Financial Times

“Blessed with an instant familiarity.” ―
The Independent

“Clinton’s voice and world view is authentic…and this is gripping.” ―
Evening Standard

“Clinton goes into deep detail about her work in Asia, Iraq and Afghanistan, Latin America, and other hot spots around the globe. She details her vision for U.S. foreign policy and the role of diplomacy. Along the way, she introduces readers to a who’s who of world leaders and gives insight into the way they think and do business.” ―

As a longtime admirer of Hillary Clinton, I was eager to read the recounting of her time as Secretary of State. I was not disappointed. First, let m say that the reader will NOT find any new tidbits of gossip about her colleagues, friends, or the like. This is a very frank and complete recounting of some of the most important episodes in the four years she served. The attention to detail is absolutely amazing! Having read her other works, this was not so surprising--she recounts details obviously from notes and because she pays such close attention to events as they unfold that, apparently, they are etched in her memory. Her respect for the leaders of other nations is noteworthy. Whether they agree with her or not, she treats her preparation and meetings together with the activities therefrom with total concern for that government. She is a loyal American! That fact comes through in every single account she offers. Her ability to transition from candidate to cabinet speaks to her versatility. I was particularly intrigued with how hands on she was in her position. The Bejing chapter. Imagining her being awakened in the predawn hours in DC to handle such a delicate matter a world away is most impressive. I was also impressed with her attention to her family and how that carried on throughout the book. Her almost casual mentions of her homes, the walks with her husband, her daughter, and her husband are heartwarming. The picture this book paints is that of a woman who has lived in the forefront of politics for a good part of her life and who knows herself enough to trust her decisions and her staff. She alludes to her stage in life and the freedom it gives her to prioritize the important matters while minimizing the issues such as her hair and makeup. Any woman would appreciate that! Her division of the memoir into six parts covers most of the world and most of the issues of her four years in a most organized fashion. Realizing how much of our history was crammed into those four years and how she, with her staff, covered all of the world is a testimony not only to her intelligence but to her stamina. Many times when one leaves a position or a company, the issues are left there is no concern for what comes next. Ms. Clinton is not that person. Her last words of this book are focusing on the future. The reader is left with the knowledge that she is ready, willing, and able to use her experience and abilities to enable our country to retain its position of world leadership. How I wish we could clone her so that our future generations could benefit from such a dedicated leader. This is an excellent read for anyone who cares about our country and where it is headed.

I really enjoyed reading this book, and I read it surprisingly quickly, given the length. Secretary Clinton starts the book at the end of her Presidential campaign in 2008, and the book finishes at the end of her term as Secretary of State. Each chapter focuses on a country / region or a global theme (e.g. human rights, climate change, etc.). This format was easy to follow and allowed the author to create a narrative thread for each chapter. A lot happened in the world while Secretary Clinton was Secretary, and this format was effective at breaking events up into manageable and interesting pieces.

Her writing style (or maybe the writing style of her ghost writers) kept me engaged. She has a lot of interesting anecdotes seamlessly mixed in with more "macro" level data and information that combined to give a pretty clear picture of the state of the world as she saw it. I like to consider myself a fairly informed person, and I try to stay on top of the news and world events, but I feel that I have a much better understanding of what is going on in the world after reading this book. Secretary Clinton has (unsurprisingly) an incredible understanding of the different places and cultures that she writes about, and a deep knowledge of history. She provides good historical context while explaining how she thinks that history should affect our current decisions. The book also offers good insight into what the people involved with large international decisions were thinking at the time the decisions were being made. All told, that makes for very engaging chapters that provide a lot of context for the problems under discussion.

Most importantly and illuminatingly for me, the book provides a good view into what the life of the Secretary of State is like, and the "everyday" affairs of diplomacy. It is easy for me to think of world leaders as larger than life caricatures of people, but this book does a good job of humanizing them and describing what actually happens in world diplomacy on a day-to-day basis.

I will say that the whole book read a little like an extended campaign speech. While I don't believe she was dishonest at any point, I'm sure there was a certain amount of spin to make her look good. That being said, she is quick to give praise to the people that she worked with, and accept blame where appropriate.

All told, I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know more about foreign affairs, the life of the Secretary of State, or Hilary Clinton herself. It is long, but it is a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard Choices for Madame Secretary
Reviewed in Canada on August 4, 2014
I found this offering by Secretary Clinton to be well written, easy to follow, sprinkled with details that keeps the reader interested. One wants to keep turning the page. The information is presented in a logical sequence and maintains subject/topic threads that keeps the momentum. Not to offer do Secretaries of State take the time and really provide a volume so intense but reads like you are there. The details keep the reader searching for more information, even though you've already read it in the newspaper or heard the nightly news- anchored mentioned the item. While I defer to Madeleine Albright's tome for fascinating and well written sequential work, 'Hard Choices' should be on everyone's summer readings. The inner sanctum if any very large company or consortium is always interesting filled with intrigue, lines, cheats, sandal as well as some down home politicking. I like the book, I would certainly recommend it to get the Middle East and how it works or does not. If you're browsing and have some free time, pick up the book!

About the product-
The pages are somewhat yellowish but no problem.
The content is good from point of view of diplomacy. It gives an account of H. Clinton's tenure as SoS, discusses her personal experiences and the choices every government has to make for its policies. The situation US was in when Obama was elected for first term as President and the aftermath has been quite explicitly given.
