Melissa Baldwin, ‘See you Later Broadway’, Broadway series book 2.

As an ARC reader I received this book for free. And promised an honest review. Here it is. English isn’t my first language. Sorry for errors.

Rating: 4 stars (of 5).

In general: Young heroine looking for real love and a promising career.

Leading character:
- Maris Forrester.
Born and raised in Virginia. Talented singer. Her great ambition: to perform on Broadway. So she moved from Virginia lo live and work in NY. First as a music teacher at a music sudio, but she keeps dreaming of Broadway.
Her love life is complicated. She has three admirers and choosing is difficult for her, because all three men are gorgeous: Kyle, an old boyfriend she broke up with when she moved from Virginia, but meeting him again in NY not all of her feelings for him seemed to be gone. Or Trevor the grandson of her beloved old Virginian friend Beatrice (90 years old and a very dear substitute for her diseased granny). Trevor is the favorite of her family and she becomes close with him when Beatrice is in hospital. And the third admirer is Zack, the brother of her roommate Layla. He’s a restaurant owner looking for a second location of his company in NY.
The author, Melissa Baldwin, describes how Maris, advised by family and friends, tries to make good choices for her love life and her career. That’s a complicated process. It results in many interesting scenes about family life, starting entertainment companies, loosing old friends and finding new ones. Perhaps is the change in behaviour of old rivals a bit too sweet or illogical for me, but - all in all - this reader enjoyed reading about a lot of lovely characters with interesting ideas about art, relationships and choosing with your head or heart.

“I have learned that true joy will come if you follow your heart.”

Maris and her dreams are back in the second book of the Broadway Series. Maris wears her heart on her sleeve as she follows her singing path to New York City.

This is a character driven story and the characters are all wonderful. Maris has a new roommate, and still depends on her sister and best friend for support. I liked that she had a strong connection with her grandmother.

Maris approaches her love life with openness and possibility. In this book, she ponders her two boyfriends from the past, and a new love interest, Zack. Zack and Maris have a strong connection, possibly because he seems like Maris- creative, accepting, alive.

“I just want to enjoy the present, and right now the present includes Zack.

Along with her romantic possibilities, Maris has some interesting career choices. The coveted Broadway role she seeks is still elusive, but Maris has some solid opportunities with new performing arts companies. One of these companies, LivElle, brings together former problems from her past.

To me, the theme of the second Broadway Series is “Moving Forward”. Maris steps up her game- she learns to make more decisions on her own. From whether or not to leave Broadway, and start a new love relationship to trying yoga, spaghetti squash and gluten-free eating, Maris is ready to move forward!

She isn’t on Broadway yet- but part of her may be!

Author Baldwin writes with a humorous, positive voice and her witty dialogue and vivid scenes of New York City add to the delight of this read. Recommend! I didn’t not read book 1 (yet) and I still enjoyed this read.

“I’m ready to take the next steps in my life, and I’m not going to look back.”

This was a pretty disappointing follow up to what was a great first book. Beatrice dying so early on set the story up perfectly for Trevor to move to New York City and pursue Maris, but no Trevor’s sweet and hot character was ruined completely. Then in comes Zach who we know really nothing about but he is magically perfect (even though it’s long distance and everyone can be on their best behavior when they see people only sporadically) and him and Maris start a serious relationship right away. It was disappointing. Trevor should have been made into a bigger storyline and Maris was so selfish constantly. Also the fact that there was no wedding scene despite Georgie’s wedding being hyped up throughout most of the book was weird.

In See You Later Broadway, the second book of the Broadway series, author Melissa Baldwin weaves a sassy tale that continues to follow the Broadway dreams, life choices and decisions, and complicated romantic trials and tribulations of Maris Forrester.

Set in New York City and told in the first person narrative, the reader was introduced to Maris Forrester in the first book of the series, See You Soon Broadway. The reader followed Maris as she made the decision to move from her hometown to NYC to chase her dream of performing on Broadway. Now in See You Later Broadway, Maris' story continues as her aspirations to perform on Broadway go awry when unexpected choices leaves her with a lot of decisions to make in her career and romances, in order to move forward with her life.

This was such a fun book to read, it had a great mixture of drama, humor, and romance, that easily kept me engaged and laughing as I followed the continued unfolding of Maris' story. Anyone can relate to the craziness surrounding dreams and goals, and how the best laid plans can unexpectedly go awry, especially when romance issues are added into the mix. There are lot of laugh-out-loud moments and surprising twist and turns: from her family and friend relationships, to her complicated romances, to her determination to follow through on her career plan to star on Broadway. Nothing is going to keep this sassy lady from achieving her dreams and finding happiness in her life.

See You Later Broadway is a fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable romantic comedy that will leave a smile on your face.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
