Fun uke - Much better than I had hoped for

Fun uke - Much better than I had hoped for
I've read the debates between Mahalo Rainbow and Makala Dolphins ukes for a long time. I've had Dolphins for years and adore them. But I needed a yellow uke with a "plain" bridge for a project I was working on. I found a second-hand yellow Mahalo in excellent condition and paid about $15 less than I would have paid for a new Dolphin. With the original strings, I found the projection of the Mahalo to be weak with little resonance and only marginal tone. The interior work was shoddy with obvious, unsightly splintered edging. However, the action and intonation were solid. So I moved ahead with my project.A week later, project completed, I restrung the Mahalo with Martin M600 Fluorocarbons, which I use with many of my sopranos. This made a huge difference! It still is not as robust or resonant as my Dolphins, but it's respectable, very playable, keeps its tuning, and is a welcome member of my stable. As an acoustic uke, it's well above average. When I hook it up to my Memorex karaoke machine or amp using my Korg clip-on mic, it really sings!I do think the Dolphin is superior, and its quality is more consistent. If you can afford the few extra bucks for one, I recommend the Dolphin over the Mahalo Rainbow. That said, this is a great little uke, and I have been delighted with it.

For the price, this thing is great. The sound is nice and bright, the build is solid. You can tune it with reasonably fine precision, and the uke keeps proper tune at all points on the neck (I've had problems with this on other budget ukuleles).

It also stays in tune as well as any other stringed instrument I've played. After unboxing, you have to give them a real thorough stretching - takes an hour or two - but after that you're good to go. You do need to tune before every session and during breaks between long sessions, but this is par for the course for even top shelf guitars & strings.

Extremely satisfied with my purchase. Like any uke, it's very easy to learn, and a blast to play. And for the price, the sound is very good as well.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this ukulele due to the very low price. I was so pleasantly surprised, however. I've had this thing for months and it's still holding up amazingly. It loses tune rather quickly, but it's been keeping a tune longer and longer the more I play (pretty typical of an instrument so I don't really care). Just because it's a beginners ukulele, that doesn't mean it's super easy to play and learn. It takes practice, time, commitment, and a lot of sore fingers, but this ukulele has survived all my terrible playing. It sounds great too which was again something I worried about due to the low price. Sure, it's no handmade wooden instrument, but it works well and holds up.

Awesome little starter! Because the strings are nylon they require frequent tuning for the first month (every 15-30 min of play) but we’ve had it for over a year and she’s still going strong in a house with 3 small boys!! The tone is clear although not as rich as a more expensive piece. Well worth the price and it will likely get you hooked!! Buy a clip on tuner!!! And fashion a strap!! Good tutorials come with it!

Nice little ukulele. I bought it for a Christmas drive for a child interested in music, but I took it out and tuned it up and played a few songs before wrapping it up. The strings held their tuning longer than I expected based on some of the other reviews. It has a pretty nice sound and was really fun to play. I was really pleased by it. This is a really nice affordable instrument that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I think this is a fine instrument for a beginner or casual musician. There was a bit of minor cosmetic imperfections with the finish on the instrument, but nothing that detracted from the overall quality or enjoyment of the instrument. I would definitely buy this again as a gift for a child or adult. For about $20, you can't go wrong.

This is a great STARTER ukulele but if you have someone who gets serious and you can tell are going to continue learning then you will want to upgrade to a nicer one. My daughter bought this one with her money because she wanted to teach herself to play (also very doable if you're musically inclined and/or have had any string instrument instruction). She loved this little uke but it did get out of tune daily so get a tuner and/or get on YouTube and watch videos to help you learn to tune your instrument. This is a great deal though for beginner Ukulele players.

I bought this based on reviews and price for my teenager .I have a couple problems so the lesson she tried to download on her phone but I reminded her she should use her tablet so she stopped it then she tried on her tablet it told her she couldnt try agian for 120 hrs which was ridiculous...it seems kinda cheaply made and it doesnt stay in tune very well I wish I would have spent a little more and got a little nicer one. Another problem was it is sold as a beginner item didnt have any papers stating what notes the strings were suppose to be tuned to we had to look everything online

I got it for my sister who has wanted to learn for a lot time. The sound is really nice. It is a real instrument, not just some slapped together glorified toy uke. I ordered a similar kit from Sawtooth before I got this one and it was garbage. The Mahalo is a nice uke. My sister loves the lesson download worth Ukulele Bart, she says it's really a good lesson and Bart is adorable.
For brand new beginners: It came totally untuned. When you first tune strings they have to stretch and settle and, until the do, they keep going out of tune. To get it to stay in tune I tuned all the strings really, really sharp to stretch the strings. I kept coming back to it a couple times a day for a couple days to re-tune and see how well it held the tune. After a couple days it held fine. So don't be frustrated or disappointed if you tune it but then can't play it. It'll be fine.

Perfect ukulele for a beginning child. At first I thought it looked a little cheap, but after a month of being owned by a 7 year old, it's holding up fine. We still have to tune it before it's played each time, but the sound is nice and the strings seem to be of good quality. I would purchase another one for my other children to learn on.
