4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 330 ratings

An Indecent Proposal

Lady Lucy MacMorlan may have forsworn men and marriage, but that doesn't mean
she won't agree to profit from writing love letters for her brother's friends -
letters that become increasingly racy as her fame grows. That is, until she
deliberately ruins the betrothal of a notorious laird, Robert, Marquis of
Methven.

Past centuries of bloodshed have left the Methven and MacMorlan families bitter
enemies and Robert is furious that Lady Lucy's letters have cost him the bride
he needs so urgently to save his ancestral clan lands. Now he makes Lucy a
shocking proposal;  in return for his silence she must become his wife and
provide him with the heir he needs. It is an inconvenient marriage of
convenience but can the rugged laird and the bluestocking beauty fight against
the power of love?

Book 1 in the Scottish Brides trilogy where Regency elegance meets Highland
passion!

One of the things I love best is discovering a new author, especially a good one. Ms. Cornick had the ability to capture my attention from the first pages of her book and kept me captive till the very end. Her characters were intriguing and well developed. What I liked best was that Lucy and Robert showed strength and vulnerability making them believable characters. She also swept you away into another time where you could almost taste and smell your surroundings. This was a wonderful love story where two people were destined to find each other no matter the tragedies that befell them. Well done Ms. Cornick, will definitely be adding you to my list of must read authors.

Strong characters, good plot makes for a delightful read. I like stories set in Scotland and this wove history in with the romance plot very nicely. If you like books with strong Scottish Lairds ...you will like this book. I will look for other books by this author.

Nice.

This book is the first of three stories about sisters...each of the women can be easily be identified to any number of women sans the personal backgrounds- being daughters born in the Georgian era, in the Scottish highlands and daughters of a Duke. It is their personal stories and how they interact[or don't interact] with each other, their personal weaknesses, strengths, fears and dreams. The first sister is the youngest-a surviving "eldest" twin who at 16, lost; at the death of her sister; her best friend & confidant, and as the eldest carries the burden of feeling responsible for her younger sister's unexpected death. As a young adult she retreats into her own world, "experiences life" through reading books, denies the validity of emotions and omits considering possible consequences resulting from the reality that humans utilize her vehicle[written words] to earn money, as a way of dealing with the fears she experienced watching her sister die and being unable to prevent the death.Still in her "own world", she becomes entangled with a hero, that for his own reasons and life experience, functions the same way. Together they struggle, manipulate, "bargain" and rediscover their long dormant humanity, love of life and each other. It is a "can't put it down" read with a lot of "oooh" twists and plot turns, but on the down side, can be rather heartrending if the circumstances reflect aspects of the reader's real life. Ms Cornick understands the finer nuances of emotions, human interactions and I love her dialogues and "real life" characterizations that transcend time, culture and social status. I became aware, while reading, that about half way through each story, that I was picking up clues about what the next book would entail so that was really fun, but it requires that the books be read in order.

Lady Lucy built her life around staying in the shadow and creating a life for everyone else. When her secret hobby disrupts Robert Methven's life the table may be turned on her and the decisions she has made.

Robert needed a wife to avoid losing the land his family worked so hard to hold on to. When Lucy's assistance to her brother has Robert's wife choosing another husband he decides he will make Lucy fill the slot. She fights, kicks, scratches, a screams a little but realizes that perhaps a marriage she can have without all the messy attachment. Robert knows he can wear her down and see that the magic two people can create is something never to be missed, especially by a married couple. Lucy has seen what letting yourself think passionately can do and she will never allow herself to be that careless with her body or affection.

Time has a way of wearing you down especially with Robert so masterful with his passionate kisses and words of love showing Lucy that anticipation is sometimes the best part of the relationship. So every night Robert chips away at Lucy and her defenses one sweet word at a time. Even battling for land that he cherishes and rousting out a traitor will never stop Robert from protecting Lucy and all that he loves.

Thank You Nicola Cornick for having the gift to write about the many intricate and delicate pieces to the puzzle of romantic love with such grace

This is the best of the Scottish Brides series. Lady Mairi and Jack become very appealing as the story progresses. I also enjoyed the setting in Scotland. The other personages, who also appear in the other books, are welcome friends.

The beginning is interesting the ending is exciting but in the middle it's so boring I almost stopped reading it. Why do romantic authors have to stuff nothing but endless sex and emotional anguish into the middle of their books? It seems like they have no imagination. Nicola Cornick wrote a good beginning and a very strong ending. But in the middle of the book I was forced to hit page after page after page and just skim over it using my iPad. I really don't recommend this story at all.

I choose this book due to the title 'The Lady and the Laird' as 'Laird' is a family name. This name is a last name, middle name and a first name. Of course it comes from Scotland. Laird (The Lord and his Lady) means Scottish landowner, just like in this wonderful romance story. Scottish feudal barony, a castle in the Highlands and all the power and respect along with it. This title was first known of in the 14 century.

So, yes I loved this powerful story - it calls to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A challenge to trust...
Reviewed in Canada on August 22, 2018
Oh my, this was a very romantic Highland story... I couldn't put it down until it was clear that the nasty villain would lose everything! And as Lucy overcame her fears of intimacy and childbirth, and Robert rose to the challenge of trusting his feelings to her - a marvellous happy ending ensued. I enjoyed reading how both needed to be vulnerable and trusting. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read from Nicola Cornick
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 3, 2013
In this story, Nicola Cornick has spun a web of impossible obstacles yet somehow, the dashing hero overcomes them and while proving his rugged determination to protect what is his, he shows great tenderness towards the damaged heroine. We follow their adventures from the ballrooms of Edinburgh up into the Highlands and eventually into the Islands. The scenery forms a wonderful part of the story, giving us a flavour of a harsh but beautiful country with doughty folk, loyal to the true laird. There is a most horrible, slimy and sinister villain and I love the way he keeps reappearing, determined to protect his own evil interests, and wreaking havoc on everyone else. The last part of the story is so full of action and suspense that I couldn't put it down until I reached the end. And then I wished it was longer.

I first read this back in 2014 but needed to read a historical novel for a challenge I’m a part of so thought it was a great excuse to reread it. And boy was I right. Still as addictive as that first time I read I automatically bought the next two (didn’t even know it had extra novels!). Great read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story but too spicy for me
Reviewed in France on June 17, 2014
The idea was really tempting and I couldn't wait to read it but even if the story was well written and the characters with a real depth, there was too many graphic scenes to my taste to make this book really great.

Of course, some scenes can be explain as important because of the storyline but at least, the ideas could have been suggested and not so much described...

I really was upset by this because I loved Robert/Lucy alchemy...

That was my first book of Nicola Cornick so I don't know if she writes a lot of "spice" moments in her others stories. Like I said, I chose this one because I thought it could be fun but I didn't expected it to be so spiced.
