I decided on this system since we bought one at my place of work and after I had configured and joined it to our network, but before finally handing it over to the final user, I played with it extensively. FAST boot!! Between 11 and 15 seconds from power on to the desktop (before it was joined to the domain and required a login).
My refurbished system worked great right out of the box, though the first thing I did was wipe the HDD of the Win 7 Home edition and the avalanche of HP and 3rd party bloatware. Clean install of Win 7 Ultimate and MS Office 2012 Pro, and it was flying!!
Incredibly quiet with a very nice solid feel. I especially love the backlit keyboard. Comes in very handy.
A few SMALL Cons:
This is a "Sealed System". It is built and designed almost like a smart phone. There are no rear covers for access to HDD, system RAM or any other installed components. Yes there are torx screws on the back cover, and yes I popped it open, but this option is not for the faint of heart. I've been an A+ certified hardware technician since 1998, and I'm still researching how to properly upgrade the small(ish) 128 GIG SSHDD to something a little bigger.
That's the second con; pretty small capacity HDD. Back in 1985, I would have lost my mind if I heard someone tell me that 128 Gigabytes of storage was barely enough for useful storage, but today it's true. To get around this, I purchased a 64 Gigabyte SD card and popped it into the included card reader and leave it installed as my D: drive. This I've mapped as my documents/music/etc folders. By combining these 2 media disciplines, I've be able to keep about 65% of the primary boot drive clear. Only issue is that by doing this, I am losing the benefit of the solid state drives' ability for VERY fast data access. Though what I'm storing is mostly data that is not accessed unless I specify (open a doc, play an mp3...) the delay is negligible.
Third con; no optical drive. Once again, not a big issue for me, as I have an external USB DVD/RW drive and it works great for installations and movie watching. Since this system is so slim and solid, I have no issue carrying it along with it's power supply and the external optical drive in a light "messenger" style bag.
System is at 4 Gigabytes of system RAM and can not be upgraded, so there is that also....
Overall a wonderful, extremely portable system for the money. Would I have spent $1300 for the factory model like we did at work? No. But as a refurb at almost 1/2 that cost, it's a great bargain. I love the feel of the keyboard and the screen is clear and bright while playing DVD's (via external optical drive as stated above) with clarity expected from systems of much higher cost.
If the need arose, I would not hesitate to purchase additional systems.
Hope this helps with your buying decision.
The problem that we encountered was the additional HP installed software provided for customer support seems to have conflicts with the Windows 7 operating system. The result is a repeated blue screen and a system dump. The problem only worsened when we had to engage HP customer support (located in the Philippines). The agents were friendly but unlike Dell they did not really understand the configuration of the PC (e.g. Dell service tag) and as of this writing have not resolved the PC issues. After four sessions of trying to work with HP technical support and 12 hours of wasted time, I am beginning to lose interest in HP products. Their resolution finally was to send me a pre-paid box to return the PC to their repair service center with a promise that I would have it back in a week. Poor consolation for the amount of trouble that the HP product support has caused and a very weak comparison to the Dell support that we have received over the years.
