The Sage knife represents Spyderco's 30-year pledge to knife crafting and continuous improvement. The Sage is equipped with a CPM-S30V steel blade with a PlainEdge that's ground flat for precise cutting. The blade is paired with a twill-woven carbon fiber handle that vibrantly combines bonded multi-colored fibers. The weaving runs deep, making ridges and textures for the palm to grasp while gripping and cutting. The knife's main distinguishing feature, however, is the LinerLock folding system. Designed by knifemaker Michael Walker, the LinerLock system is one of many ingenious locking devices and mechanisms that Spyderco recognizes with the Sage series. The Sage concludes with a silhouette wire pocket clip that adjusts for left- or right-hand carry.

Spyderco will donate approximately five percent of sales of the Sage to the National Alzheimer's Association Denver, Colorado chapter.

Lightweight, Deep Carry, Comfortable Grip, Could be Sharper, Quality Design/Build
    > Lightweight. (4 of 5)This pocket knife is great for everyday carry (EDC). The lightweight style of this blade creates a comfortable pocket carry. The carbon fiber is a clear lightener of the knife. For the amount of steel from the blade, its always a surprise to feel how light it is.> Deep Carry. (4.5 of 5)The wire clip allows this knife to carry deeply. The clip is strong and holds the pocket well. The wire clip is durable and I have had no issues with the clip bending on this knife; however, I have had another Spyderco wire clip (on the Dragonfly 2) get caught on a chain link fence and bend off of my pocket. The wire clip is removable and I'm sure if it bends on you for the same reason, you can bend it back just as I did on my other knife.> Comfortable Grip. (5 of 5)It just plain feels good in the hand. Finger grooves and jimping on the knife is perfectly placed. It simply feels good and there are multiple ways to comfortably grip the knife.> Could be Sharper. (3.5 of 5)The knife comes sharp out of the box, don't get me wrong. It was able to gut through paper and cardboard consistently with relative ease. However, for over $100 dollars, I expect a razors edge. I have gotten cheaper knifes from Kershaw that come sharper out of the box. The Sage was easy enough to re-profile and sharpen to a razors edge (30 degree). Again, I shouldn't have felt the need to resharpen it straight out of the box.> Quality Design/Build (4.5 of 5)Look at the pictures. Spyderco makes great stuff. The quality is fantastic and I feel as though I can rely on this for EDC. However, the lightweight nature of the knife would make me want a heavy knife for intense cutting tasks. After using the knife for heavier tasks however (extreme boxes, heavy fabric, light wood use), the knife holds up better than expected.>> Total Score >> 86% << (21.5 of 25) This knife gets a solid above average score. If you want it and have the money to buy it, buy it now. You won't regret purchasing this knife.

I have the Benchmade Emissary, the Kershaw Blurr and now the Spiderco Sage. For me, the Spiderco is the perfect size for an EDC; the Benchmade slighty small; the Kershaw slightly large. The Spiderco can take on jobs that either of the other two knives would excel at. The Benchmade handles small up to medium size; the Kershaw handles large down to medium size. Fit and finish of all three knives is excellent except that the Benchmade has very slight slack or side to side movement of the blade. Not bad but still not perfect. The other two are perfect. All came very sharp and hold their edge well thanks to the S30V steel used for the blades. The Benchmade opens the fastest and hides best in the pocket. The Kershaw is more noticeable in the pocket and opens very quickly but is only 2nd fastest. The Spiderco is the slowest but is very smooth opening. I had to learn how to open the Spiderco one-handed because I had used the other two first. With them the knife axis lies along the axis of your palm and the blade is flicked open using the thumb stud. The Spiderco is a little different. Its blade has a hole for the thumb and the axis of the knife has to be at a small angle to the axis of the hand. The thumb is used to rotate through a full 180 degree arc whereas with the other two less than 90 degrees is required. The 180 arc is very smooth though and provides for a certain tactile satisfaction. One-handed closing of the blade is a lot easier with the Spiderco for me and I feel safe doing it. I'm still a little nervous to do so with the other two. There are two other features that the Spiderco has that I like that the other two don't have. Gimping at the top anchor of the blade and a thumb stop at the bottom anchor. This allows for an extremely sturdy grip. The bottom thumb stop is the reason I don't mind closing this blade one-handed.

If I could have only one knife I would get the Spiderco since it covers from small to large EDC tasks. But, the Kershaw is awesome for outdoor work and the Benchmade is awesome for light duty and opens super fast. For night carry I would pick the Kershaw; for office carry the Benchmade; for everything else the Spiderco. I feel lucky to own all three.

Oh wow, Where do I start?

Fit and Finish: The fit and finish on this knife is amazing. When I received this knife I spent a good couple minutes looking for imperfections and I could only find one. On one side of the blade the grind isn't fully ground to the back of the blade, where the finger choil is, it's only a very very small portion. It's not that big of a deal because I don't use the edge that far back on the knife, but it's there. It does however still cut paper with ease on that spot. It's just a visual imperfection, and I could get it fixed if I so desired. The blade centering came perfect out of box and stayed that way for quite some time and only takes 10 seconds to get it back to perfect with a T8 bit. I am very impressed with this knife, don't let "Made in Taichung Taiwan" fool you. Spydercos quality control is excellent and the people they having making their knives in that factory know what they're doing. For me the knifes lock up had a breaking in period, it was stiff at first but now it's perfect. it feels like glass on glass when I open it and I don't know if it's just my knife or if anyone else has noticed it but when the blade locks open it gives the most satisfying POP I've ever heard on a knife. I'll literally just sit on the couch watching TV with the wife and just open and close it just to hear that sound.

Ergonomics: When I decided to purchase this knife I was a little worried how I would like this blade, being how it's on the smaller side that what I'm used to. I wear a large sized glove and this knife is perfect in my hand if I choke up and use the finger choil. I can hold it normally but for this knife it just feels natural to use the finger choil. The edges are smoothed and feel comfortable. There's jimping on the spine of the blade and on the choil, it's the best jimping I've come across on a knife. It grabs and holds onto your thumb but it doesn't feel uncomfortable by any means, it just works. It has a wire pocket clip and let me tell you, I had my doubts about it but man is it stiff. Not so stiff that you can't get it out of your pocket but stiff enough to give you peace of mind. With the black wire clip it also disappears into your pocket leaving people none the wiser. Also with the flat design of the knife it's so comfortable in the pocket I've forgotten I've had it on me multiple times.

Steel: CPM S30V is a hardened, powder-made, wear, and corrosion resistant stainless steel. Fun fact, it was also the first steel designed specifically for knives. It came hair shaving sharp out of box. This was my first time using this steel and let me tell you, I was blown away. On my other knives I'd have to sharpen them 3-4 times a week with moderate use. I can get away with sharpening this blade once every 4 weeks with heavy use. The only down side and what you're going to have to deal with since it is a harder steel is it's going to take a longer time to put that nice razor edge back on it. It takes me about an hour to get that perfect edge. That's something I'm willing to deal with for amazing edge retention.

Overall: This was the first "nice" knife I've ever bought. before this I've only had Kershaw and SOG. I was so amazed with this knife, the twill-woven Carbon Fiber looks fantastic and the open construction allows for easy cleaning without taking it apart. I am so happy with this knife. I use it for everything, EDC, Food prep around the kitchen, heck one time I made steak and sat down at the table and forgot my steak knife and just used my Sage that was in my pocket. When I first got it all I wanted to do was baby it but now it has scratches on the blade, I've dropped it and it's seen some use. I don't baby my tools. Plus I think knives that look really nice look even better with wear on them, like a museum piece. I paid $90 for this knife a couple months ago and at that price for everything I listed here that is a STEAL. One more thing before I stop typing this review is if you plan on taking your knife apart I recommend getting some blue locktite for the pivot screws, I noticed recently that the blade centering and retention comes a little loose over time, even faster if you flick it. Like I said it takes 10 seconds with a T8 bit to get it back to normal but it's just nice to have it locked down. With all that said, I'd buy this knife again in a heart beat if something were to ever happen to it.
