FINAL DECISION: Immensely likeable characters and a story filled with depth and surprises makes MY AMERICAN DUCHESS a keeper for me.
THE STORY: The Duke of Trent is as proper as one might expect from an English peer of the realm and is expected to marry a well-bred English miss. One conversation with the exuberant Miss Merry Pelford, an American heiress, and Trent is thinking something different might do for him. Merry is completely inappropriate to be a duchess. She keeps making social mistakes. She is too friendly with servants. She doesn't have proper respect for the social hierarchy. She has also been engaged twice in America and jilted the men both times. What makes her completely unsuitable, however, is that on the night Trent and Merry meet, she has just become betrothed to Trent's twin brother.
OPINION: Merry is a woman who has cried "love" so many times that she cannot be trusted when she says "love" for real. Full of life, emotion and joy, Merry has been searching for the kind of love that her deceased parents had. Instead, she has fallen into a series of infatuations which threaten her reputation because of her string of broken engagements. I loved how Merry is. In less talented hands, her character might seem superficial, but instead her character just seems full of life and willing to risk all for love. Clever, funny, caring and filled with joy, Merry is one of my favorite heroines. She always errs on the side of caring for others even to her own detriment.
Trent is just adorable. On the outside, he seems the stereotypical duke but has a soft gooey center. From the beginning, he wants Merry and only his loyalty to her brother stops him from pursuing her. This is a book where I thought the blurb was a bit misleading. Trent expects that he will find a proper English lady but from the absolute beginning, he accepts and is attracted to Merry's joy and unconventional nature.
There is a turn and surprise in this book which involves how Merry ends up not engaged to Trent's brother. I don't want to give away the story, but readers might suspect that ultimately Trent and Merry end up together. James masterfully takes these characters deeper into relationship. Their relationship begins as attraction and seems to develop into a satisfying relationship but then they find there relationship can be deeper and it does. Infatuation, attraction, lust, friendship, companionship and deep love. This book explores those emotions through these characters. Complex and multi-faceted, these characters made me cheer for them.
This book is funny and clever and ultimately just made me feel good because both Trent and Merry are so likeable. As an American, I also must say that I just loved how Merry turns English society upside down and changes Trent's world in ways he never imagined.
WORTH MENTIONING: Who knew that there were such things as rented pineapples?
CONNECTED BOOKS: MY AMERICAN DUCHESS is a standalone book although it exists in the same world as James' other novels.
STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.
Though the Duke of Trent and Merry Pelford were resolved to not fall in love with each other, their story was quite emotional and passionate. When the duke meets Merry in a dark balcony at a ball, he doesn't know she had gotten engaged to his younger twin brother, Lord Cedric, earlier that evening. He's fascinated by the funny, smart, opinionated, fact-gathering, democratic American, who disregards aristocratic titles. He's also taken by her statuesque, voluptuous beauty, unlike Cedric who doesn't think her looks are exceptional and only wants to marry her inheritance. Whether it's a twin thing, Trent decides on the spot that he wants Merry to be his duchess.
Merry has vowed to make it to the altar with her third fiancé. She's come to England with her aunt and uncle to evade the scandal in Boston after she jilted both of her former fiancés. Cedric is a flatterer--charming, sophisticated, elegant, and beautiful. He's a fashionable dresser, whereas the duke is always wearing black and loose coats that he can put on and take off without a valet. He's burly and muscular from the outdoors, somewhat remote in society, and his expression is rather severe. But Merry makes him smile and laugh. Merry challenges him intellectually, and their verbal spars are clever, engaging, and cute. She's also the only person he feels he can be himself with, and vice versa.
Merry's stubbornness and outspokenness however can be both weaknesses and strengths as her spirited nature gets her into scandalous situations in society, both funny but potentially disastrous. I liked how Merry stood up for herself, her family, and her beliefs. Because her parents had passed away, she lived with her aunt and uncle, and she was only twenty, I could understand why she was insecure and confident at the same time, why she wanted to please Cedric and not break up another engagement.
But when Merry figured out that she didn't want to marry Cedric after all and felt pressured into marrying him, the plot became very suspenseful and stressful. Trent also felt the pressure from ladies who wanted to marry his title and wealth. I couldn't wait until Merry and Trent were free to be together. Yet, when they're finally together, there are more complications because Trent views Merry's inability to commit and falling in and out of love as flighty. They agree to base their relationship on their strong friendship and not the illusion of love.
But this is a romance, so of course they're going to fall in love. It's agonizing how far apart they become when they realize they're not on the same page anymore, and it's infinitely rewarding when they finally return their love for each other. Merry and Trent are both complex individuals, flawed and human. Their affection and compatibility are quite clear, yet they're reluctant to put their feelings into words and damage the fragile bond, trust, and friendship that has defined their relationship. Although they both aren't sure if they know how to love, it's clear that they love their families. So, it takes a little bit of drama and lots of action to reunite their stubborn, loving selves. I wasn't a big fan of the longer sex scenes, but I liked how Trent took charge in bed... and the greenhouse... and I liked how Merry asked for what she wanted and took the initiative as well.
I liked how Merry had a powerful effect on Trent by causing him to become self-aware. MY AMERICAN DUCHESS takes place twenty years after the American Revolution and shows how one woman can achieve a revolution of her own in her personal life and relationships, bringing an entrenched way of thinking into a new light.
The epilogue contains a brief glimpse of a reformed Lord Cedric. I'm very much interested in his story as well.
*ARC received from Edelweiss
I will not get into the storyline as others already have but suffice it to say that Merry's Americanism is indeed both charming and unappreciated in England. Trent takes to her because she gives him cut directs and doesn't treat him as a Duke is expected to be treated. Trent needs that and is drawn to her unusually frank candor. This is a lovely story with great sensuality and charm that takes a great deal of time layering in "love" and other emotions. The dialogue is, as usual with Ms James, stunning, witty, and emotionally fulfilling. I felt the conflict of personalities and cultures, the past hurts and healing with every page I turned. I loved Merry. She goes down into history as a fave Heroine for me. I truly enjoyed reading the differences and how they played out. It kept me reading until all hours of the morning.... Stopping at the HEA is usually the norm in romances but this one takes us further into how Trent and Merry adjust, and that is so good. This is a great read. It is a real keeper, and a re read for years to come.
Top reviews from other countries
The first half is just riveting as Merry's honest style clashes with stuffy aristocrats. The second half based in the country is a bit slower and more about evolving emotions. This book is not as wonderfully fluid as 'four nights with the duke' or 'the duke of her own' but it's still Eloisa James at her best- funny, heartbreaking and believable.
