Awesome. Superb recording and sensational performances.

I'll start with stating that I normally only review discs with which I am very familiar with either the music being performed, the performers, or, ideally, both. In this case, I unhesitatingly proclaim upfront to be an expert on neither! However, I am very familiar with most of Prokofiev's symphonies, and have certainly heard the 3rd several times before. However, this original version of the 4th is new to me.
Starting with it, I found it slightly smaller-scaled and more balletic than the more familiar revised version. And, indeed, the liner notes reveal this symphony has thematic origins drawn from Prokofiev's ballet L'enfant prodigue. It often reminds one very much of his ballet music, including Romeo and Juliet. The 3rd Symphony also has origins from a stage work, that of Prokofiev's lesser-known opera: L'Enge de feu. It can be a rather angry-sounding work in other hands, but here it is both imminently musical and powerful - sheer genius. I have never before enjoyed the 3rd Symphony as much as I did listening to this performance.
Without going into extensive details about the compositions themselves, I can confidently tell you that the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra is sensational - at least with this conductor on the podium. James Gaffigan seems to have a thorough understanding and love for Prokofiev and he is the most persuasive advocate for these works. These performances cry out with the utmost passion, ardor, and orchestral color. And yet there is a clarity to them which allows one to hear so much inner detail. It really is quite a revelation.
Challenge Classics' recording quality certainly has much to do with the above described excellence. And I want to make clear that this is absolutely, without doubt, one of the very best-sounding SACDs I have yet heard. (Incidentally, I listen in 2-channel, stereo SACD on a very high quality system - not surround sound). Not only are the qualities praised above portrayed with the utmost realism (namely warm, colorful and detailed orchestral textures), but the power of this orchestra, as it fills the rich acoustic with absolute clarity and dynamic ease, is awesome. As is the bass drum contribution. Anyone who thinks of Reference Recordings when mentioning the bass drum should listen to this disc to hear what a recording of the bass drum should sound like when done correctly. It is magnificent. Nowhere in evidence are the overblown, close-mic'd, unnaturally boomie bass blasts which Reference Recordings regularly imposes upon the listener. Indeed, I encourage Professor Keith Johnson (recording engineer for Reference Recordings) to listen to this disc to learn how it's done.
I unhesitatingly recommend this disc, not just for the sonics (which really will knock your socks off), but for the most enjoyable Prokofiev performances I've heard in years. James Gaffigan and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic are magnificent. This easily surpasses the ongoing SACD series for BIS from Andrew Litton in all areas - interpretation, recorded sound and the quality of the orchestral playing. I have just ordered this team's follow-up disc, that of Prokofiev's 6th and 7th Symphonies, and cannot wait to listen to it.

Sym 3 and 4 or 5????

Tell you what is confusing, is when I rip FLAC files from this disc to play in my DAP and the metadata says that these are Symphonies 3 and 5, NOT 4!!! And how is a poor, ignorant boy like me to know?
Anyway, the recording is great here, the sound is wonderful, but I am not finding an affinity in my heart to Prokofiev.

SUPERB & THRILLING PROKOFIEV IN SPECTACULAR SACD SOUND.
2017年2月27日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
These are great performances, as fine as the old Leinsdorf/BSO ones, but in addition, they are in SPECTACULAR SACD sound which reveal the magnificently detailed dramatic scores Prokofiev wrote, realized by conductor James Gaffigan and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. They are part of what appears will be eventually a complete series of all the symphonies, BUT DO NOT WAIT.
I urge all lovers of Prokofiev's music not to hesitate and get this now. These are thrilling performances and not be missed.

Excellent performances in excellent sound

Excellent performances of these Prokofiev symphonies in excellent recorded sound. I have other recordings of these symphonies, but none in multi-channel sound that come close to matching these performances.
