My favorite hiking companion

My favorite hiking companion
I purchased the Aura 50 in 2012, so I have the older purple model, but it's the same basic setup. I've used it for small backpacking trips, as well as my 5.5 month thruhike of the AT this year. The 50-liter size is perfect for not letting you carry too much weight, although to fit all my winter gear I did have to use some compression sacks to get everything to fit. After resupply days, I sometimes just had to leave the top somewhat uncinched to hold everything, but that was no big deal.I put my sleeping bags (winter, then summer) in a compression sack in the bottom of my pack, and secured my sleeping pad on the bottom external straps. This was handy as it made my pack a kind of chairback when I took breaks. The straps and hip belt were as comfortable as a pack can be, but with long, sweaty distances, you will always have rubbing. I got packrash on my hips and back, but not the worse case I saw on trail. The side stretchy pockets are nice, but they get REALLY tight when your pack is full, so it can be hard to put stuff in them while it's strapped to your back. The reservoir holder in the back is nice because it fits Camelbak, MSR, etc without issue. The improvement I would request is having an external bladder section like many of my male friends' packs so that I don't have to unpack everything when I go to fill the bladder. The hip pockets were handy for fitting my SPOT GPS, pocket knife, watch face, etc. I do wish they were a bit bigger. As with any long-distance hike over many months, the pack (especially straps) were SERIOUSLY funky after a while. After multiple washings, it still smells, but all packs will do that.I got a lot of compliments on my pack through my hikes, and I'll be buying the same pack when it's time to retire my current one.

This pack absolutely lives up to the hype. The interior and exterior organization is helpful, not in the way. You'll find a logical place for everything, but plenty of flexibility. The size is big enough to get a full load, but not too much extra space that feels like a waste. The real star of this pack is the suspension system, so let's talk about that.

I loaded up my new pack, slung it on and expected to spend a long time tweaking and adjusting it for a comfortable fit. It took me 5 minutes. A couple pulls on the shoulder straps, the load lifters and adjusting the hip belt and I was done. I lugged 25lbs for about 10 miles on it's maiden voyage and it felt like nothing. My first trip was in muggy, sometimes rainy conditions and the way the pack sits away from your back with the mesh foam gives you great ventilation. I can't wait to take this pack on a longer haul trip.

This is the second Osprey pack my family has bought and we've all been super impressed with the quality of the materials and the smart design. I can't say enough good things.

I've officially taken my Osprey Aura AG 50 Backpack on its madden voyage and am very pleased with its performance. For this first hike, I packed about 20 lbs of gear and trekked over six miles. This short distance allowed me to work out all the details of where to store bedding, clothing, smaller items and food. After adjusting the backpack to fit my 5'8" frame correctly, I found the pack and cargo to be practically weightless. I love the new Anti-Gravity suspension system; the lightweight mesh back panel is extremely comfortable. The other feature I found most beneficial was the hip belt with its easy accessible cargo pockets. This feature allowed me to store smaller items, like my iPhone, gum, etc., without taking off my pack for retrieval. There were also additional benefits I found while packing my gear, like the whistle and pockets in the main body of the pack to secure smaller items.

My husband purchased the men’s version of the backpack (which he loves), so we compared features. The biggest difference we saw was a few extra external pockets which would have been very nice on the women’s pack. Otherwise, they were quite similar. My only other suggestion for improvement would be the color selection. You know women, we like choices. Great job to the designers and manufactures of this equipment. Truly top notch!

I could go on about this backpack for quite a bit, but I won't. I'll keep it short and sweet. Somehow I manage to fit SO much into this pack and no matter how heavy it is (60+lbs), it has such a great harness system and sits so well on my hips, that my back feels perfectly fine after hiking (even in sand for 11 miles in a day).

I took this on the Lost Coast Trail with me for a week and it was fabulous. It has a super handy pouch on top for easy access if you have things strapped to the outside of your pack and don't want to be bothered with unstrapping it all to access something. There are not one, but TWO zipper pouches on top, so that can be super useful when "trying" to organize things. Great bottom zipper pouch for a sleeping bag and what have you (shoes in my case). Honestly, the best thing I would say is the amazing fit. It might not work out that well for someone who had narrow hips though.

Osprey products are great, but there's started to be a squeaky noise coming from the pack

Injury waiting to happen. This pack fixes your hips in place. When unhindered, human hips rock in their natural state rock while walking. Especially women's hips. This problem will be magnified exponentially with weight in the pack: you cannot walk safely with your hips locked down.
It's so risky for the back and joints, I removed this pack immediately.
Furthermore, with the scoop in the back, this pack puts weight far from the torso. This pulls people backwards since most people (pretty much all women) don't have the upper body strength to counteract the backward pull. This too, risks back injury.
