I have continued to use this as my personal item for flights, most recently on a budget Frontier flight. No problems putting it under the seat in front of me. Still love the unique phone pocket and can't figure out why other companies aren't doing this. Can't figure why this company isn't putting phone pockets on their backpacks, either.
Still wish the company would come out with a similar, slightly larger bag, that would meet personal item dimensions for budget flights, but better accommodate a laptop. I still have had no rips, tears, or other issues with the bag and consider it a good investment. If you don't need to carry around a laptop, I recommend this. It would fit a good size tablet very nicely though.
I would also like to see a company manufacture a very thin, perhaps compressible, packing cube that would fit inside this to hold just a shirt and underthings as backups, in case luggage is lost. Maybe something that's about 10x8x1 inch compressed.
October 2018 update:
I used this while traveling to Las Vegas for a trade show and was generally pleased, although I would love to see the manufacturer come out with a deluxe version that's about 1" wider, about an inch deeper, and with a thin, water-resistant lining, especially for the main compartment and for the phone pocket on the strap (preferably in a bright, contrasting color to make it easier to see the contents).
I used this bag the entire week-- on the plane, on the monorail and at the show. It sat on the floor in my hotel or hung on hooks, and even though I was toting around my laptop and a notebook the entire time, I had no problems with the seams giving out.
With that said, my laptop is relatively small -- it measures 12.75 x 9 x 0.5 inches, and it took some finessing to fit it in this sling bag, so I'm not confident that it won't rip out at some point. I would not change my rating because of this, because I am aware of the bag's size and have chosen to push it to the limits.
It fit very comfortably under my plane seat so I had room for my feet. With my other business backpack, I have to embark before the passenger in front of me if I want the backpack to fit under the seat, and even then I'm not sure that backpack isn't encroaching on that passenger's space. I much prefer flying with this bag than my nicer business backpack. If there was a deluxe version of this that was slightly wider and deeper, I could still fit it under the seat and have a little room to spare for some extra clothes, in case my luggage is lost. Just sayin'.
Also, although the bag is water-resistant, I wish it had just a little more lining to keep the contents dry, especially my phone. During a soaking rain (after I landed here in the north), I realized that my new phone had water all over the screen when I unzipped the phone pocket. So a deluxe version with a thin waterproof lining would be great. On the other hand, it was very dry and hot in Las Vegas and that phone pocket on the strap proved perfect for toting around my phone and my room key car in a slim wallet.
Still very happy with this sling bag for the 30 bucks I paid, but again, I'd like to see a deluxe version priced at around 40. I still recommend this bag, as long as you're not pushing it to the limits or using it in a downpour.
Original review:
I rarely review an item this quickly, but I gave this sling bag a good workout yesterday at our ROBO-CON Michigan festival, enough that I can give it a fair review.
I loaded it up with many water bottles, many times, to distribute to hard-working volunteers--it held probably at least 10-11 full-size water bottles on each trip, plus many of the smaller water bottles. It was pretty comfortable for being so heavy, and I had absolutely no issues with it ripping out. I wore the pack around instead of carrying a purse, and each time I'd load up the water bottles, I turned it around and wore the main compartment on front so I could easily get to the water.
I plan to use it instead of a full-sized tech backpack for an upcoming trade show to tote around my Mac laptop, which measures 12.75 x 9 x 0.5 inches. It just barely fits in the sling bag, but I think it should work fine. My other bag is just a little large to fit comfortably under a plane seat--I either have to irritate the passenger ahead of me or deal with it taking up my valuable foot room--I think this will be much better. I also love the pouch on the strap for my phone--it's much easier to get to your phone instead of trying to fish it out of one of the main zipper pockets. The sling bag is also much easier to wear than my tech backpack, (my tech backpack is always difficult to get over my second shoulder if I have the straps adjusted to a comfortable length). I also like that I don't have long webbing straps hanging down--on my tech backpack, I'm always grabbing at the extra webbing straps on escalators, as a friend was once injured when a pantleg was caught on an escalator.
I like that the strap is cushioned, and that it can be worn on the opposite side--I generally wore the phone pouch strap on front, slung over my right shoulder so the strap attached on my left side, which made the zipper easy to access. I also like the padded portion in the center that goes against your back. The second zipper (the one behind the slash zipper you can see in the picture when the bag is turned at an angle) worked out very well to put my small wallet, keys, and a couple pens, since there is a smallish pocket that holds them in place when you unzip this compartment. Later I noticed there is also a leash for your keys.
I had intially considered a very cheap sling bag but I'm glad I found this one. I also like that there's not some obnoxious company brand plastered on the bag--you can see the white lettering against the light heathery gray material, but it doesn't look ignorant like some of the cheap bags. This is a deal compared to my tech bag and after this weekend's good experience with the sling bag, I'm really looking forward to being able to count on it as a work travel bag.
My one suggestion would be to included an elasticized pocket inside the phone pouch on the strap. This would alleviate any concerns about your phone falling out when you unzip the pocket, and make it easier to store another small item there, such as a room key card. Overall, though, I'm extremely happy with this sling bag. It's obviously well thought out to be a functional tool for people who are trying to accomplish a lot in an efficient manner. Looks nice too.
The main compartment fits my Samsung Galaxy 10.6 Tablet, with keyboard, in it's case (like a small laptop), my smaller, kindle-size tablet, journal, 24 pack of art pens, a pencil case, and a small zippered bag that I use to hold my various cords/cables and charging blocks.
The smaller, middle compartment holds needed quick-access items like meds, a small makeup bag, pens and my keys (with the attached key clip inside), with room left over. The front pocket fits my sunglasses and a few random smaller things.
The cell-phone pocket on the strap looks small, but expands to hold my Samsung J6 with a double case, so would likely fit larger phones like the bigger Iphones.
The side mesh pocket holds my full-size coffee mug or water bottle, with adjustable locking cord (?) (like the little thing on the ends of sweatshirts or drawstring bags to tighten the cord).
The very back slot is perfect for holding my wallet, and has the RFID security. The location keeps it secure, but easily accessible.
Very thick, durable canvas, not a cheap nylon.
Straps are adjustable to wear over the left or right shoulder, and the straps are very comfortably padded.
If you register the product on their website, you also get free life-time warranty on the bag, should anything happen to it!
I am VERY pleased! I spent hours searching different bags, brands and reading comparison charts and reviews, and decided on the NeatPack.
I bought this shopping for something with RFID protection for a trip. Only the smallest compartment is RFID, it will fit passports and a little more, however there are no pockets within the compartment to separate/organize items. I would have preferred an additional RFID compartment. I expected more information describing the rfid protection materials used, with the shipment. There is only a small tag sewn on the bag that says "stop rfid," but I did not find any description about how they designed the rfid protection on the merchandise description tag. Despite it was lacking in what I most wanted, I found this bag was great to have on my trip, The size was just right to stow under the front seat of the plane. The size/weight with items I put in it was just right to carry everywhere I went: passports, documents, camera, tablet, keys, and water or sun glasses in the side pouch. I kept a smaller RFID purse within it for cash/cards. The cellphone pocket on the strap was very useful. The bag is lightweight and sturdy and well designed, many of it's features were useful to me- though when unzipping it to take something out, I had to be careful that nothing else fell out. I zipped it back right away as I traveled with many distractions and demands on me. A zipper on each end might be helpful. If this bag had been any larger it would have been like a backpack, which is not what I was looking for. I am glad I purchased this bag, and plan to use it daily to replace my purse.
