Readers of Kate Atkinson will delight in this suspenseful debut novel about a woman haunted by nightmares and her grandmother's role in a doomed love triangle almost seventy years before.

What if the past is never buried?

Death, accidental and early, has always been Abby Walters's preoccupation. Now thirty-three and eager to settle down with her commitment-shy boyfriend, a recurring dream from her past returns: a paralyzing nightmare of being buried alive, the taste of dirt in her mouth cloying and real. But this time the dream reveals a name from her family's past. Looking for answers, Abby returns home to small-town Minnesota for the first time in fourteen years, where she reconnects with her high school crush, now a police detective on the trail of a violent criminal. When Abby tries on her grandmother's mesmerizing diamond ring, a ring she always dreamed would be hers, she discovers a cryptic note long hidden beneath the box's velvet lining. What secret was her grandmother hiding? And could this be the key to what's haunting Abby? As she begins to uncover the traces of a love triangle gone shockingly wrong nearly seventy years before, we, too, see that the layers of our lives may echo a past we’ve never known. With mesmerizing twists and a long-buried secret that may finally rise to light,
You Were Here weaves together two worlds separated by decades, asking if the mistakes made in past lives can ever be corrected in the future, and if some souls are meant to find one another time and time again.

Review

"Artfully weaving the past and present together, You Were Here is a stunning tapestry of a novel full of dreams, nightmares, horrific crimes and long-buried secrets. Gian Sardar shows us the ways in which the past can reach out and take hold of the present; that places and objects hold memories and time is not the linear thing we think it to be." —Jennifer McMahon, New York Times bestselling author of The Night Sister

"Sardar's characters are well-developed and her prose is dreamlike, at times reading very much like poetry. . . . [T]his deftly executed study of the dark that lies in the human heart is artfully drawn. An impressive . . . debut with a touch of the otherworldly."
Kirkus Reviews

"[B]eautifully written . . . this first novel will appeal to readers of Christina Schwarz and Diane Chamberlain."
—Library Journal

"[An] intricately plotted first novel . . . Sardar keeps the tension high to the very end."
 —Publishers Weekly

"Prepare to be dazzled by hauntingly masterful storytelling! Packed with delicious prose and page-turning intrigue,
You Were Here is a remarkable and unforgettable debut." —Susan Meissner, author of Secrets of a Charmed Life

"You Were Here
is a beautiful puzzle box of a booka page-turner that manages to also be strikingly poetic. I was gripped from the very first page, and moved by the time I made it to the last." —Janelle Brown, bestselling author of All We Ever Wanted Was Everything

"Sardar creates a suspenseful tale sure to keep readers entertained … The characters are intriguing; Sardar does well at developing them and unfolding them at the right time to reveal just enough to hold readers attention.
You Were Here is a unique read that does not disappoint." RT Book Review

“A nail-biting thriller, a tragic love story from the past, a very contemporary romance, a genuinely scary ghost story with a full-out gothic finale that would make Edgar Allen Poe sit up and applaud—Gian Sardar has confidently and seamlessly woven all these genres into a novel that is completely original and relentlessly engaging.
You Were Here is a bravura, genre-busting performance.” —Valerie Martin, award-winning author of Mary Reilly and Property

"What if love is so powerful that it gives us access to mysterious unseen worlds? This question is at the heart of Gian Sardar’s dizzying and seductive debut novel. As I was reading You Were Here, I kept wondering about  the nature—and value—of love, marriage, and the complex space between. Modern and timeless, part thrilling detective story, part ghost story, part love story, Sardar’s debut is an evocative literary cocktail. I couldn’t put it down!" —Sari Wilson, author of Girl Through Glass

You Were Here is a terrific debut that beautifully spins the tale of two love stories—one set in the past and the other in the present—coiled together by longing, betrayal, and rage that unravel to a stunning and deeply satisfying conclusion. Gian Sardar is a writer to watch.” —Carla Buckley, author of The Good Goodbye and The Things That Keep Us Here

I loved this book. The writing is beautiful, very poetic, and the characters are all well-developed and amazingly I found myself siding with all of them at different points. At first you don't see the full connections between the "Then" story and the "Now" story...but believe me, they're intricately connected....Ultimately this is a book about past lives, though it's only mentioned in the description of the book and is not spelled out within the story, which I love, because too many books hit you over the head with their intent. With this, the reader has to see it and put it together, and once you do you see so much and it adds so much to the experience of this book. I got so into the characters that I truly missed them when I was done, and there's a ton of suspense (I flew through the last half of the book). The pay-off is incredibly worth it. I definitely recommend this book.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
Although the word is never mentioned, this is a story about reincarnation and star-crossed lovers finding each other in another life…or not.

The story switches back and forth from the present era to 1948. The chapters are labeled “then” and “now” although it took me several confused chapters to notice this.

“now”…Abby has a strange scar/birthmark which looks like a knife wound and she has a recurring nightmare of being buried alive. She is in a blah relationship which is going nowhere. When she goes back to her hometown she has an instant connection with an old high-school crush. Aiden is now a detective working on a serial murder case. I could have survived without the graphic description of his case but maybe that was supposed to add excitement to the story.

“then”…Eva is having an affair with a married man who promises to leave his wife for her. Nothing original about that until the wife throws a monkey-wrench into the situation. Just an aside here: a young man, who might be possible marriage material, comes in to the restaurant where Eva works and tells her about Marlene Dietrich coming to the hospital while he was asleep and leaves a note for him. I’ll explain that to you later.

“now”….Aiden tries to help Abby unravel the 70 year mystery of her grandmother and her disappeared friend. Who is in the nursing home is pretty predictable but nothing is really resolved and I didn’t have a clue what the message in the ring box meant. Abby goes back to California to settle things with the boyfriend and he tells her of a dream of being in a hospital and Marlene Dietrich comes while he is asleep and leaves a note for him. (insert “the twilight zone” theme music here).

That’s it, review over.

I just got the chance to read You Were Here and I plowed through it in 36 hours. I literally couldn't put it down, I was walking around the house with it. It is a great mystery with two powerful storylines that intertwine. The characters are so engaging and empathetic. When I finished it last night, I woke up missing them this morning. Gian's gift for description and setting the scene is remarkable, you truly feel like you are there and you know these people. There are many characters with many different back stories but somehow you feel connected to all of them and their history which is quite a feat and talent on the author's part. I highly recommend!

This is the second book I’ve read from Gian Sardar. It’s been a long time since I’ve come across someone with such an amazing talent with words. I was drawn in from the first sentence. I hope to read everything she produces!

Abby is plagued with nightmares that seem to be a revelation of her grandmother's past. She returns home to attend her high school reunion and to investigate the connections. She reunites with a high school crush, Aiden, who is a detective investigating a string of brutal sexual assaults on young women in the area. While Abby and her neighbors are understandably frightened by the threat of a serial rapist in their midst, she and Aiden seem to uncover a love triangle involving a neighbor of Abby's grandmother. Could a crime involving the couple living next door to her grandmother decades ago be the reason why Abby is having nightmares?

You Were Here started out a bit slow but became more interesting as the story progressed. Towards the middle of the book, the suspense still built slowly but the story became much more exciting and a little bit horrifying. The end did have some twists that I didn't see coming. The characters are fascinating. Eva needs William so much but turns out to be much less mature than she believes herself to be. Claire is more emotional than she is given credit for, at first. The writing wasn't bad but it won't pull the reader along in a way that makes the reading faster and easier, either. I really enjoyed this book and I hope that Sardar continues to write thriller fiction as I would love to read more from her in the future. This book would be great for any reader who enjoys mysteries and thrillers. This book would also be good for readers of women's fiction or historical fiction that want to add a bit of a mystery or thriller dynamic to the story.

I received an advanced copy of this book in order to write an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This book is not only beautifully written, but full of mystery, intrigue, and dare I say a touch of morbidity?
If you like authors who pay attention to detail and are poetic, yet keep the pacing on track w twists, turns, -a modern day narrative meets mystery w a veil of that Victorian goth u know u love.I couldn't put it down. Gian Sardar is my new fave

I love how Gian Sardar weaves together two stories from different decades. One is a tragic love triangle. The other a thrilling mystery. The two stories work well together and the end of each section makes it difficult to stop reading.

The characters feel so real and are so dynamic.

I love each aspect of this book.

It was hard to believe this book was written by the same author of "Take what you can carry" as it failed to convey the same depth of emotion.
