These 22 digitally remastered shorts from 1952-1954 were made during a tumultuous time for The Three Stooges. First, in 1952 Curly succumbed to the illness brought on by his stroke six years earlier; he was only forty-eight when he died. Shemp had really hit his stride by this time and he is at the top of his game in the new shorts from this period, but budget cutbacks at Columbia forced director Jules White to recycle some old footage, so although the work in this collection is first-rate, one can't help but wonder what could have been done if they'd had the opportunity to develop more new material. Fortunately, this era did leave us with such classics as the Stooges' first 3-D short, SPOOKS! (1953) and PARDON MY BACKFIRE (1953); SHOT IN THE FRONTIER (1954) a parody of the classic film High Noon; and Larry's hilarious spook of Brando in CUCKOO ON A CHOO CHOO (1952). These shorts are all presented as they were projected in the theatres; some in widescreen for the first time since their

What chills, what thrills! While the Three Stooges' best days were behind them, these 22 slaphappy shorts produced between 1952 and 1954 demonstrate that the enduring comedy team still had a lot of hair-pulling, eye-gouging, and head-banging life in them yet. You can be forgiven a certain amount of déjà vu when watching some of the shorts. Studio budget cuts necessitated the use of recycled footage. "Booty and the Beast," for one, contains Curly's now-poignant cameo in "Hold That Lion." Still other shorts recycled plots from the team's Curly days ("A Missed Fortune" is a remake of "Healthy, Wealthy and Dumb"). While none of these shorts rank in the Stooges pantheon or are likely to change anyone's anti-Shemp bias (can't we all just get along?), they are knockabout fun for die-hard fans. The highlights of this set are "Spooks!" and "Pardon My Backfire," the team's pioneering forays into 3-D. An engagement anniversary cake, water, fire, and hypodermic needle comin' at ya are crude but effective. Other shorts offer sublimely surreal silliness. In "Cuckoo on a Choo Choo," a T-shirted Larry storms around like a Marlon Brando wannabe, while a soused Shemp hallucinates a giant canary. The vaudeville tradition lives on in "Tricky Dicks," with god-awful gags (the old "wooden leg named Smith" bit) and bizarre dialogue ("How dare you look like someone I hate," a woman greets Larry). The political satire "Three Dark Horses" is a fine example of the classic Stooges formula, in which villains seek three patsies "who are too dumb to think and will do what we tell them. Now where do we find such guys?" Enter the Stooges. But others, like "He Cooked His Goose," break convention by presenting Moe, Larry, and Shemp as individuals rather than a team. While the Stooges themselves may be showing their ages, the slapstick, expertly timed and exquisitely choreographed, never gets old. --Donald Liebenson

The fantastic Three Stooges shorts found in Volume 7 are finally being presented on DVD as they were originally shown in Movie theaters; some in widescreen for the first time since their original release and as a fan I'm happy the widescreen shorts were included in this set. Sony Pictures has also done something wonderful by including 2-D versions of "Spooks" and "Pardon my Backfire" in this set as well as the 3-D versions and the 3-D glasses to view them with.
Sony Studios have to be commended once again for finally listening to the fans after all the years of inferior shorts and devoting precious time and meticulous care into the restoration of the 22 incredible stooge shorts found in Volume 7 and the entire remastered "Stooges" collection to date. The 22 digitally remastered & restored video transfers found in volume seven are simply amazing to say the least.
No longer do these magnificent shorts look like they were made over 50 years ago. Sony Pictures has given fans exactly what we've always wanted; the best picture & sound possible. The newly restored picture is pristine & the remastered soundtrack is perfect. All 22 shorts from 1952-1954 are presented on two single sided discs and packaged in slim cases. The disc artwork and packaging is fantastic to say the least, making this set even more attractive and highly collectible for any Stooge fan to own. The 22 newly restored & remastered shorts from Sony Pictures are once again presented in chronological order completely uncut, politically incorrect and presented in Beautiful Black & White. Hip Hip Hooray!

I'm something of a CHAMPION of SHEMPS cause; he simply should be appreciated more for his own brand of classic humor and not panned and berated merely because he's NOT Curly!
In CORNY CASANOVAS, when SHEMP looks at MOE apologetically after accidentally yanking him off the top rung of a ladder, landing his head in a bucket of filthy mop water, then nearly decapitating him while trying to remove the bucket and then utters this CLASSIC: "Gee Moe, I'm sorry Moe, What mo' can a fella say? That's all there is; there ain't no mo'!", only to be beaten senseless by Moe, after which Moe chuckles and utters this gem: "take it easy, kid, you're only nervous" - proving that he doesn't get the humor in SHEMP'S little ditty, I drop to the ground screaming with laughter!!!!
No matter how many times I see these episodes, I always enjoy the boys' antics in these classic comedy routines!
As always, the video and audio qualities are superb, and this volume features two "firsts" in the series: first, the appearance of some shorts in anamorphic widescreen format, in order to replicate the original theatrical showing. I've read a few somewhat negative reviews about this, which I can understand to a point, since most fans are accustomed to viewing the shorts in the usual full-frame format. But I viewed these with an open mind as I did with the short-lived colorized series (that I was very opposed to initially), and I actually enjoyed seeing them in widescreen. Granted, it will take a little getting used to, but once you do, I think you'll enjoy them as well.
Second, there's the appearance of the Stooges' two and only 3-D shorts, "Spooks!" and "Pardon My Backfire", both of which are presented in standard and 3-D versions and come with 3-D glasses. The 3-D effect is decent when viewed on an older TV, but an 1080p HDTV with at least a 42-inch screen is preferred to get the best effect. In either instance, it also helps to sit about 6 to 8 feet away and directly in line with the screen; the effect is blurred and choppy if you sit closer and/or out of sight.
Again, Sony deserves major kudos for listening to the fans and putting obvious time and care into the entire collection. I'm eagerly anticipating the final volume featuring the remainder of the Shemp shorts, as well as the remaining 16 features with Joe Besser.
