I loved this movie when I was a kid. It was one of the movies I had in heavy rotation on a Saturday afternoon. I probably watched it fifty times over the years but haven’t seen it in age and now rewatched and I think I appreciated it even more. It is such an incredibly fun and silly movie. It isn’t perfect, a Canon films budget with 80s technology they did a pretty decent job with what they had. It leans hard into Star Wars with black armoured stromtroopers and with candy colored laser blasts. Yes they had guns in the original He-Man toys so I give them a pass on that. The creatures all look so cool from Gwildor to Beast Man. Again no budget ensured the more creative He-Man characters were replaced but again you need mega bucks to make them all. What the movie lacks in creature effects and a lot of Eternia it makes up for in absolute buckets of energy. I doubt anyone in this movie had a bad time making it. Nobody took the movie seriously for a second and just had fun playing along. Frank Langella, Billy Barty, James Tolkan and Meg Foster really tucked into their roles with a knife and fork. Frank Langella has the same high energy Raul Julia had for M Bison in the Street Fighter Movie and it really gives extra power to his character. There will never be another actor who can play a live action He-Man beside Dolph Lungren. It was the role he was destined to play. Crazy to think Courtney Cox is in this, when you think of her you think big time celebrity but they all gotta start somewhere. The only thing this movie is really missing to make it one of the all time great 80s action/sci-fi/cheese movies is a big power ballad. They couldn’t get Stan Bush on the phone to rock out a serious power ballad? Call it I Have the Power and the song writes itself.
If you have reasonable expectations you will really enjoy this movie. You can tell that it's a wee bit dated some thirty years later, and obviously there weren't unlimited resources for fight choreography, lighting, and effects. But it's comparable to other movies of the time and it's a very compelling premise, a final showdown. The story maybe lacked a little but was tied together neatly. Of course an action movie has characters repeating to each other to hurry up, you can't hold it against this movie and let it slide in a big budget production. Not all the cast was as into it as they could have been.
I couldn't help thinking how good the creature make-up was as I watched, ironic that should be what brought me out of the story was the realism of the make-up. I saw the credits - Westmore. Of course! What skill. And as for Gwildor, I see reviews raving about Skeletor, but the real star was Gwildor. What voice inflection, and mannerisms in that mask, how he managed to be so expressive is amazing honestly. Sort of nice that although he was in essence the comic relief the character was also the smart one who was solving the problem and guiding the group.
There are a lot of higher budget more modern movies that are much more boring and unpleasant to watch. Definitely lighthearted fun if you're not spoiled by modern cgi and thrills.
When's the second installment coming?

So bad that I loved every seconds of it.
It's much more fun and enjoyable than anything modern Hollywood is making. Plus it is so refreshing to see a movie using only practical effects rather than CGI garbage.
Come on, buy that movie and treat yourself with some AUTHENTIC fun!
