Great micro 4/3 camera with full manual controls
    5 Stars
Great micro 4/3 camera with full manual controls
This was my first mirrorless camera (micro 4/3), and I'd surprised how well it compares to my older 550d and my newer 7dm2. The lens quality on this camera is top notch. It easily beats my older 550d with 18-55 kit lens, and seems as good as as my EF-S 17-55 f2.8. It also has as good if not better low light noise performance compared to the 550d, but not the 7dm2.It's not pocketable in anything other than a jacket, but I think it's one of the smallest cameras with the micro 4/3 sensor. The lack of a pop-up flash was a concern, but I found I rarely need it. I do not think there is flash exposure compensation, or at least I haven't found a way to access it from the Q menu; the setting is blacked out and inaccessible in M, S, or A modes. Also the exposure compensation dial does nothing in manual mode. You have to be in shutter or aperture priority, or P mode for it to work (or i auto mode I think, I've not used this mode yet).Auto ISO in manual mode works fine however. I usually shoot in manual with auto ISO so this wasn't a problem. However since I can't adjust exposure compensation, I've found it easier to just shoot in shutter priority or aperture priority as the need warrants. Some have said the i Auto button is easy to hit by accident; I haven't done so yet and it's hard to see how you would do so without being clumsy. The focus on this camera is QUICK! However it misses, focus on macro a lot, but manual focus with peaking works wonders. I can't seem to find a way to recenter the single point and single area focus points/areas, so I mostly keep those points/areas center by default. I hate having off center focus points/areas by default when I turn the camera on, so I focus and recompose leaving the points/areas centered. The multi-area focus mode doesn't always focus on what I want, so I don't use it often. Image stabilization lets me shoot 1/15 at full zoom, you still have to do your part, but it works well.I've used the GPS logging function that comes with the Android app and it was easy to sync my phones GPS data with the photos taken. The camera did not want to pair with the app using the QR code. I had to manually connect the phone to the camera WiFi SSID. Once paired, viewing pictures was fairly quick, and remote view and operation worked very well. Although I admit I haven't used it since the initial testing. The camera is build very solid and is easy to use one handed. It feels like an expensive camera should. The electronic view finder is fast, doesn't skip when panning, and overall looks pretty good. I haven't noticed any color splitting (Each RGB color supposedly refreshes sequentially in the EVF). Battery life is great, for me at least. I think I'm easily getting around 400 - 500 pictures on a single charge while using a combination of LCD and EVF.Unfortunately my first copy of this camera had about 5 stuck "hot" pixels that appeared in the RAW files and were visible through the electronic view finder, although to be fair you had to look for them somewhat, but once you found them your eye would see them again them each time. However after loading the RAW file in LR5 they would be removed. I'm guessing the map out data is included in the RAW file? My second copy seemed good, however I still found a stuck pixel several weeks after owning the camera. Again, these do not show up in the final picture and are mapped out in the RAW file.It shoots 4K video at 30fps. I don't have a 4K monitor, so to me 4K video looks the same as 1080p video :) But it's nice to have. This camera does not have a mic input, but I've used an external mic in the past so I'm ok with that. Finally I wish it had more megapixels. You can't really crop well when you have 12 megapixels. And at farther distances you lose a lot of detail. This camera could easily replace my DSLRs as my walk around camera for distances 15 feet or less, and it's a great indoor camera.

    First comments - Sept 19th.
Why I bought it: My Canon G12 got ruined in a drink spill. I needed a light second camera to my Canon 7D.

Had the camera a few days so these are very preliminary observations:
Use case - Superb choice as a second camera to a DSLR. There are smaller cameras out there, but this camera has the DSLR type controls that will make you accept the larger size.

With this feature rich of a camera, anyone, and especially beginners, will need to spend time with the manual first. However, with the dedicated aperture and shutter speed controls, and others, experienced photographers will quickly adapt.

Physical size - fits in cargo type shorts or looser long pants without a problem. Uncomfortable in dress or khakki pants. Like any compact camera, controls are set close together, meaning it's really easy to accidentally and maybe unknowingly, change a setting. Still, ergonomics are good.

    Weight - not a factor.

Overall fit and finish - very, very good.

LCD - Decently bright outside, with adequate resolution. But, it does not move or articulate, so it is exposed (to scratches) all the time. Either install a protector, or be careful not to scratch it.

Dedicated Controls - shutter speed dial on the body, and f/stop ring on lens as you would expect.

Zoom - Can be adjusted by a lens ring and by a lever. Both are adequate.

Viewfinder - Electronic, sufficient resolution, good information, good overall performance. For eyeglass wearers like myself, I found the diopter adjustment sufficient to read the EV very well.

Exposure Priorities - different than all other P&S. THERE IS NO PASM DIAL. Aperture and shutter's dedicated dials EACH have "A" for auto positions, which you leave, or change to a value, to control respective exposure. I like this now.

ISO control - There is a multifunction wheel to control ISO. You can set it, or the camera can do it automatically.

Autofocus - seems very, very good, have not spent a lot of time exploring it yet.

jpeg and raw - I shoot in raw in raw only (no raw+jpeg). Edit in Lightroom. So far, the raw images have been very good. I did experiment with pure jpeg which seem "ok" as is. A major criticism seems to be the jpeg quality of this camera, but for me, they seem ok.

Storage - get the fastest SD card you can get if you want to shoot 4k video, or it won't work. The Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-3 10 64GB works ok for me. It's 95MB/sec. Slower, cheaper cards will work but they won't record 4k video reliably. Trust me.

Lens cap - get the aftermarket auto lens cap. Works well.

Lens - zoom range is 24-75mm or so, but within its range, it seems a great performer. Lens is fast enough for me.

Image Quality - Very good! Noise is often a problem with small sensor cameras, but this one is performing well.

Will update as I have time.

    Update at Mid January 2016:
Camera continues to perform well, with no failures or unexpected problems. Battery retains a decent charge. If there is any comment possible, it does seem like the camera overexposes slightly, but that is easily corrected. Shoot raw.

    Report
Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2014
    Style: DMC-LX100KSet: Camera OnlyVerified Purchase
The LX100 is the first compact camera I have had that I can bring with me and not second-guess leaving my dslr at home, due to it's low light abilities and image quality. I'll go over what I see as pro's and con's.

    Pro's:
    1. Fast and Good lens. The lens is a 24-75 equivalent, that works for most purposes, though there are times when further reach would have been nice. In order to do that, Panasonic would have had to compromise on speed and/or size though. On the wide-end, the camera requires very low light due to the 1.7 f-stop. This, combined with a large chip (for a compact) and optical image stabilizer, means you can take pictures that come out sharp, even in very low light situations. The lens is also very sharp in center, and good (but not fantastic) on corners/along edges. Some people think extreme corner-to-corner sharpness is vital, but if you are interested in taking pictures of your family, you will likely only care about center sharpness. Even if you plan to do more pro type work, good photographers know that in most situations, you actually try to focus in the center and have the edges contain very little of interest, as it draws your attention away from what you want to show in the picture. If you like to shoot test-charts or are very into landscape photography, the only compact I can think of which would be good enough, is the Sony RX1, but it costs 2.5 times more, is slower at focusing, and does not have a zoom lens, Another note is that the out of focus areas, where you can often see bokeh "balls" (think lights in the background that are out of focus), will show very nicely. This is an area where it is much nicer looking than the RX100, plus it can also do a shallower DoF than the RX100.

    2. Sensor - this is what captures the image from the lens and it is very large for a compact. It utilizes the same sensor used in micro four thirds cameras from Panasonic and Olympus, however it does not use the entire sensor. Instead, they have opted for a cropped picture that changes which portion of the sensor you use, depending on the format you shoot in (16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 1:1). The resolution in all modes are roughly 12.8MP. Yes, this is lower than some other cameras, but you can do pretty large prints without issue, and each pixel is in essence more precise, since you have less MP per square inch. In conclusion, between the lens and sensor, this camera produces very impressive quality pictures (and video).

    3. 4K video in 24p. You might think - 4K video is stupid as very few even have tv's that can handle this, but keep in mind that if you are willing to work with the files it produces, downsizing 4k to 1080p yields sharper 1080p than virtually any other camera costing less than $3-5000. You can also use the extra resolution to zoom in, in essence increase your focal length, or utilize it to re-frame your video.

    4. Macro. On it's widest focal length, you can focus down to about 1 inch, which is quite good for macro, and better than any other compacts out there.

    5. Controls. If you like manual controls, this camera is GREAT. You can control pretty much everything with dials or rings on the lens.

    6. Build Quality - very good for a compact.

    7. Responsiveness. It is very fast at focusing, and has an impressive frames per second (which varies depending on how you focus etc).

    8. Features; Nice standard Hotshoe if you want flash, and it does come with a small one you can use in a pinch (I don't like to use built in or small add-on flashes personally). It has focus peaking and zebra readout which is useful for manual focusing and helping with exposure. 4K photo mode where you can shoot a clip and then pick out good quality frames from it and save as photos. Nice if you shoot a group picture and want to find a frame where nobody is blinking, or you want to get an action shot at the right time. I really like the multi aspect ratio/format. If you want to shoot more like a landscape, you can use 16:9, or for other types, pick the format that suits you best. Uses a leaf shutter which is very quiet, and allows for flash sync'ing at far faster shutter speeds than most professional cameras (either 1/2000 or 1/4000 if I recall, vs many pro dsl's that are limited to anywhere from 1/200 to 1/500). Built in viewfinder, which is great to have. It shows you exactly what you are taking photos of, and you don't have to worry about sun, plus putting the camera up to your eye, adds another contact point which stabilizes your camera. That leads me to a good Optical image stabilizer, that works very well. Remote shooting can be done using either an apple or android phone or tablet.

    Cons:
    1. No built in ND filters, but this is partially compensated for as there is also an electronic shutter that goes all the way up to 1/16000. This is great for pictures in fairly strong light where you still want to get a shallow area in focus. However, for video, where you tend to want to keep shutter speeds low to avoid jerkiness, you would probably rather need to use the 43mm filter ring on the lens and get an nd filter.

    2. No touch screen. This would have been nice to have, mainly for moving focus points around. The rest of the controls are so nice on this camera anyway.

    3. Touch screen doesn't tilt, which would be good occasionally, but on the upside, the wifi remote app for apple and android works really well.

    4. For video, there is no mic in, and the audio that is recorded internally is only passable. There are ways around that like external recorders or if you shoot with multiple cameras, have another camera record the audio, but that is not always how you shoot video of course..

    5. A tad big, but considering the lens they put in here as well as the sensor, that is forgiven. Don't try to stick it in your pants pockets though. It will likely fit in your coat-pocket however.

All in all, a magnificent camera that while relatively pricey, really could replace a dslr and video camera for many people. It's main competitor is probably the RX100 mk3, so a quick comparison:
    1. Low Light Shooting - the LX100 wins, but not by a huge margin
    2. Scenery/Pictures with almost everything needs to be in focus: RX100-3
    3. Portraits/Family shots - LX100 as the out of focus areas look nicer, plus you can have a shallower focus area.
    4. Video Quality - LX100 as it can shoot great 4K, and even when downscaled to 1080p it looks better than the Sony.
    5. Responsiveness - LX100 has a higher burst rate and faster focusing.
    6. Size: RX100-3 as it is a bit smaller and can fit in some pants pockets at least.
    7. Controls: This one is probably rather subjective. I prefer manual controls of the LX100 (it does by the way have a very nice auto mode as well), but the RX100-3 has other strengths. In the end, FOR ME, the LX100 is better.
    8. Still Features: Probably a tie overall
9: Video Features: RX100-3, since it has nd filters, tiltable screen

5.0 out of 5 stars The photographer's camera

This is a true photographer's camera. It's ease of use echoes the vintage setup found in the Fuji x series.
Frankly, it's a joy to use. It makes you want to shoot, and rewards that desire with lovely bokeh, a useful lens range, nice image quality, close focusing and a host of built in features.
It also does video. Rather poorly in terms of professional usage, but the 4k quality is almost bizarrely crisp, routinely beats my g7 I would argue.

All in all, a fantastic camera that I loved so dearly that after selling it years ago, I purchased one this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are looking for a very powerful small camera, not too expensive, this camera is for you.

If you are an advanced amateur photography and you want to have the total manual control on your photos this camera is for you.
You can chose the shutter speed to stop the movement or to create a movement illusion on your photos.
You can chose the aperture to decide your depth of field.
You can do manual focus exactly where you want.
With this camera, you can take very good photos in a dark place using only the existing lights. The wide angle zoom is a 24mm at 1.7, an ideal lens for existing lights photography.
You can also use it to do HD or 4k video.
    I highly recommend this camera.
