This is a pretty long review
This is a pretty long review, but is based on several months' use. If you're just window shopping, your time may well be better spent elsewhere. But if you're thinking of investing almost $600 for this item, read on, you will learn a lot!I bought this several months ago, and purposely waited before making any kind of evaluation on it. It's heavy, and you will need help to move it from place to place. But it is so SOLID, a very good feel. Even if you never use the height adjustors, this thing will never vibrate or rattle and is completely noiseless except for moving air in the fan. I don't like the look of the casing around it, so I simply removed it and have had no problems, it looks great now. There is a slight risk of something getting caught in the belts, but I have two dogs and they always stay clear of this thing. Some folks have had issues with the saddle, but it is very durable and it's comfortable for me. You do have to really tighten the seat nuts and bolts A LOT - with a ratchet, not just a wrench. Otherwise the seat will feel unstable and you might feel like you're falling forward or backwards. Short people have problems reaching the handlebars, but this is no problem for me. My wife is short, but she doesn't like bicycles and she just uses our treadmill. The best feature for me is the ability to exercise arms AND/OR legs, in contrast to older exercise bikes which only worked out the lower body. This is a major advantage in this type of bike, and should be carefully considered. I actually exercise my lower body on the treadmill, and then use just the handlebars of this unit for upper body. There is a good place to rest your feet if you just want to work your arms. The wind created by this bike is a major plus for me. I have to use a fan with the treadmill but no fans at all with this. You do have to pedal backwards to feel the wind. If you don't like the wind, just pedal forwards. The pedals, which I don't usually use, are topnotch construction and there are foot covers attached to each pedal and they are very comfortable when I do use them. There is a place to put a water bottle, which is a nice touch for bottled water advocates. One nice touch that I DO use is an optional reading tray which attaches to the frame of the bike. When attached as recommended, it is annoying and will obstruct your view. What I did was a workaround and moved the tray downward on the frame. I had to move the computer console down as well, but was easy enough by moving the console down so that it attaches with two bolts instead of four (please see the attached photos). But now I can see over the top. I use the tray for writing down the calories expended and other values reported on the console. Also I work out in intervals, with 90 seconds of a normal, relaxed pace and then 30 seconds of very high intensity, then repeating this cycle for 20-30 minutes. The times to start the high intensity work is up on that tray, so I know when to relax a bit and when to ramp up the effort, based on the time elapsed, which is noted on the console. Those are the things I like, and there is a lot to like about this equipment. There are also shortcomings, which make a 5-star rating impossible. The console itself has somewhat faint numbers and the numbers are very thin. If you have very good lighting though, this will not be an issue, but in dimmer lighting it's a shortcoming. The next downfall is the inability to enter your body weight. Without that input, the machine cannot possibly compute an accurate calorie count. This is a big issue for me, especially since the last model of this bike, the so-called "Evolution Comp," it was possible to input a weight and get a better calorie count. Why they decided to downgrade in this way I can't say, doesn't seem like cost would have been that much. Also the Evolution Comp had big fat characters that were very easy to read. On the other hand, it was necessary to push lots of buttons to see all the parameters (pulse, calories, watts of power, time elapsed, distance covered, speed) which are all visible ay one time with the AD6 and not with the Evolution Comp.On balance, I would say this: if you can find an Evolution Comp, I would go with that before the AD6. I see them (used Evolution Comps) every so often on Craigslist at attractive prices. If you're there at the right time and the right place, grab one! You can also find them on eBay, but the shipping cost would be considerable, as these bikes are very heavy. There is also another consideration. How accurate are the calorie counts even with ability to input weight? I have an exercise watch, made by a Finnish company (Polar, and Polar is pretty much an industry standard). You can input your weight, height, age and several variables. Many times you will see the phrase "Polar Compatible" on various pieces of exercise equipment you can see in a gym. I contacted Polar and asked them what percentage error there was in their calorie counts on the pulse watch. The first response I got was a few words about something I didn't even ask for, and no error estimate, which I specifically requested. A few days later I got a request from Polar asking me about how my experience was on their website. I complained loudly and profusely that that the guy must not have even read my request. When I rated their website poorly, they were able to detect that right away and asked me why (on the form). Well I told them! After that I was contacted and I could see they were interested in consumer satisfaction if you push hard enough. What they told me then was it was "hard" to come up with an exact error figure because "everybody's different" and other such platitudes. From that I concluded the real error % must be pretty high (not 1-3 %). And yet, without any body weight input and age and height, the error would have to be even worse. Still, it's nice to have these calorie estimates and other parameters as a way to compare one exercise session to any other, to see if progress is being made, etc.In other words, I downrated t he AD6 pretty severely because they had the technology to get a better estimate, and chose not to use it with this newer machine. I certainly hope someone at Schwinn / Nautilus will read this some day. I really like Schwinn, generally speaking.
