Pros:
1. Easy to use. Since it was used, it didn't include any direction booklet, but the directions were written on top of the machine, and I had no difficulty getting it to work.
2. Air tight! During carbonation I couldn't hear or see any signs of leaking between the bottle and the machine. I didn't see any water leaking or hear any hissing, so it looks like all the CO2 is going directly in the bottle. The next step would be a soap bubble test to verify this.
3. You control the amount of carbonation based on how long you push down on the machine. If you let go at the first LED, it's low carbonation, 2nd LED gives you medium carbonation, and the 3rd LED gives you high carbonation. I tried at all 3 LEDs and got the expected level of carbonation all 3 times.
CONs
1. New ones are expensive and you can read up on the cost/benefit analysis in some of the other reviews. If you want to make soda cheaper, then you may not want to invest in this product. If you want to have carbonated water available at your convenience, then this is perfect. I fall in the latter category, so it's worth it for me. I like to make my own fruity flavorings :).
To mitigate some of the cost of the proprietary CO2 canisters, I took advantage of my homebrewing equipment. Standard kegging equipment includes a 5lb CO2 canister, which is A LOT bigger than the tiny proprietary canisters that SodaStream wants you to buy. I can't quanitfy how much larger because my CO2 is measured in weight, and SodaStream measures in volume. Anyway, these are expensive up front (around $80), but refills are about $15-20 at the local welding shop (yes, this is food safe. It's meant for beer kegs). Then, I went on eBay and found someone selling a hose with the right connectors on it (this was about $60). This set up also worked like a champ! Pictures are attached. You could probably put the hose and connectors together for a cheaper price (the proprietary side is about $20-50 depending on where you buy), but I wanted to go with something I knew would work.
Buying a used Soda Stream and the connectors put me out about $100. It'll take me about a year to get my money back, but considering how frequently I use it, and the convenience, I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

SodaStream helped me break the soft-drink habit in with surprising ease. I discovered, to my surprise, that carbonated tap water was more than sufficient to quench whatever desire I had for soft-drinks. Not only did I kick the soft-drink habit with amazing ease, but my daily water consumption went up like a rocket.
When we go out now for dinner, I carry a bottle of my SodaStream carbonated water with me.
Laugh if you will, but my a1c level dropped like a rock since I started using SodaStream and following a low-carb diet.
This model is one of SodaStream’s most strikingly designed. The carbonator bottle slides in from the bottom and attaches to a brass fitting. There are no valves or screws to fiddle with. Just screw the bottle into its fitting and you’re done. There is a penalty to be paid for this simplicity: there is no visual warning of when the CO2 bottle is almost empty. You literally have to guess a bit to determine if the cartridge is empty.
Two plastic bottles are packed with the unit. We fill them with ordinary tap water and put them in the refrigerator until we want carbonated water. You simply place the bottle into a minimalist frame underneath the carbonator nozzle and press it back toward the unit.
You then press down on the front top of the unit and the CO2 is released into the bottle. Three diodes indicate the level of carbonation. When the desired level of carbonation is reached, let go of the top and remove the bottle. You can use flavorings. We’ve used their diet cola and like it.
No plumbing or electrical connections are required. No maintenance either, other than wiping it down from time to time. The one thing I am not clear on is what happens when the internal battery powering the diodes goes out. I hate to think of this as yert another “disposable” appliance.
Overall, I love this machine. Drinking carbonated water is surprisingly refreshing and making that carbonated water couldn’t be easier.

Now, WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE, is bought a paintball tank adapter on Amazon for like $20 and a NEW 12oz paintball tank for another $20. Yes, it would have to refill the tank more frequently but this would have clearly been the cheapest option upfront and barely more expensive when it comes to long term refilling of the tank.
As far as the SodaStream itself goes, my wife loves it and uses it all the time. Would highly recommend it as a purchase if you drink a lot of carbonated water or other beverages (although we've only done water). This would be a 5-star item if they didn't require purchase of their proprietary CO2 bottles.

Only complaint (which really isn’t one) is that this was a gift for my husband. It was delivered 5 minutes before he got home and just in it’s regular box, so very clearly marked what it was.
