Product Description
This dual-purpose freezer and fridge thermometer monitors internal “room” temperature of the inside of your fridge or freezer and sends it a wireless remote temperature sensor gauge! Two wireless, remote thermometer sensors communicate to the door- or wall-mounted digital display gauge, which provides alerts when freezer or refrigerator temperatures are out of your customized, preferred range. This perfect-for-a-restaurant thermometer helps you store foods at safe temperatures to prevent food spoilage and avoid related foodborne illnesses. The wireless thermometers provide data to the digital thermometer display to show refrigerator and freezer temperatures and record highs and lows for each environment, as recorded by each remote temperature sensor. The programmable alarm notifies you audibly and visually when temperatures rise above or fall below your set minimum or maximum. The digital thermometer display has an integrated magnet and keyhole for easy mounting, and it requires 2 AAA batteries (not included). Each remote temperature sensor requires 2 AA alkaline or lithium batteries (not included). Lithium batteries are recommended for use in sensors for temperatures below 4 degrees Fahrenheit (-20 degrees Celsius). By using this combination of temperature gauge and freezer monitor, you will rest assured that your family or restaurant’s food is stored safely and appropriately. A perfect gift idea for Father’s Day, Christmas, or birthdays, this digital refrigerator and freezer thermometer comes with a one-year limited warranty.

This product is designed to monitor both a refrigerator and freezer simultaneously, although with the wide temperature range available, I suppose it could monitor any two locations. You get two monitors, white in color. Each monitor has a suction cup, and a powerful clip at the rear, suitable for attaching to wire shelving. In addition, there is a monitoring unit, also white, which has powerful magnets, allowing attachment to a ferrous metal surface, such as a refrigerator door, a built in, fold out desk stand, and a fitting for a wall mounting. I choose the wall mounting at a distance of 25 feet from the refrigerator. Everything worked perfectly.
The remote units each require two AA batteries; the monitor 2 AAA batteries. The manufacturer's recommendation is NIMH batteries for the freezer monitor, if the temperature will get extremely cold. I used IKEA alkaline batteries for all units and have not had any problems in a month, although my freezer temperature gets as low as -20F. Battery life for all units appears very good. Battery compartment is easy to access and insert batteries.
The main unit can handle both F and C temperatures at the flick of a switch in the rear. In addition, it is possible to optionally set a customized max/min alarm for each monitor to notify you audibly of a problem with your freezer and/or refrigerator compartment. The main unit logs both high and low cumulative temperatures for each unit, until readings are cleared. There is a clear button to clear the max/min readings. The alarm was easy to set and very loud when triggered. There is also a visual indicator for each monitor when an alarm has been triggered.
I have had absolutely no problems. The temperatures recorded appear very accurate when compared with both a mechanical thermometer and an electronic LCD thermometer.
The LCD numbers were large and easy to read with the maxmin readings somewhat smaller.
The only issue I can see creating an issue, is if you mount one of these remote units near a cool air duct, readings will likely be very off. With careful placement this device should give very good service.
The only feature I would like added to the product is the ability of the main unit to access wifi to allow for retrieve readings and notifications remotely allowing the device to alert you of a problem when you are not at home. You could cobble together this feature using an Arduino, for example, with a sound sensor or other IoT device.
All in all a nifty piece of kit at a very economical price. Fully worth having, and likely to earn its keep the first time you have a refrigerator failure or forget to completely close the refrigerator or freezer door properly.
The Chaney Refrigerator / Freezer Thermometer is a brilliant way to keep an eye on how your food is doing. Here is how it works. You get one thermometer which you put into the back of your refrigerator. A second thermometer goes into the back of your freezer. Both of these send signals *wirelessly* to a display unit. The display unit is magnetic and can stick easily to the front of your refrigerator.
You can walk by your fridge and see at a glance exactly what temperature your fridge and freezer are currently at. The system also displays the highest and lowest temperature each area has reached since you last reset the values. So if you set your fridge normally to 34F and you see that it has been swinging between 20F and 50F, it's time to call a repair person! That would definitely cause serious damage to your food.
In addition, you can set alarm values, both high and low, for both sensors. So you can set the freezer to start beeping an alarm if it drops below -50F, or if it goes up above 0F. Of course the chance of your freezer suddenly going insane and becoming "way too cold" is probably slim - but I know a number of people who had electrical problems with their fridges and who lost cooling ability without realizing it at first. Having a beeping alarm go off before your freezer's contents all thaw is a very good thing!
The wireless unit says that it can transmit a fair distance, but this of course would depend on all sorts of things - if there are concrete walls between the source and destination, if there are other interfering signals around, and so on. For me, I know it works with the display on the outside of the fridge it is monitoring. So I can say with great certainty that that works very well.
I know for sure the alarm works wonderfully - only a few weeks after buying the unit, we had a thunderstorm take out the power. It was only a short while later when the fridge half of our unit began beeping.
Is there a downside to this? Well, when we first got the set, the display LEDs simply would not light up well. We tried at least 8 different sets of batteries in it to ensure it wasn't a bad set of batteries. Some of the number pieces would light up, while others would stay completely unlit. We called up Chaney and they were extremely prompt and helpful. Only a few days later we had a fully functional display unit in our hands, and it worked beautifully. Electronic devices will never be 100% foolproof so I don't ding them much for having that glitch, and offer praise for them resolving it so readily.
All in all, I love this device. I can glance at my fridge every time I use it and know exactly what its temperature is and what the recent ranges of temperature have been. I can optimize the fridge and freezer to have the optimal temperatures to keep my food and wine fresh for as long as possible. That means milk lasts longer, salad fixings last longer, everything lasts longer. That stretches my food dollar as well as it can be stretched, and easily pays for the price of the thermometer within a month or two.
Highly recommended. I'm even looking into getting another one for my wine fridges. The only question then would be if the wireless transmitters interfere with each other!

The alarm sounds persistently but not nerve-wrackingly when it does go off. We discovered this when we first set up the alarm, as we set the minimum/maximum temperatures while still at room temperature. You only have to press "reset" once the remote sensors have cooled down to the freezers' temperatures.
Having an alarm to warn us about the rising temperatures gives peace of mind. The thought of losing a freezer full of food is something that you just don't want to deal with, if avoidable. $50 isn't much to pay to save several hundred dollars worth of groceries.
Units operate using AA batteries (not included.) The display unit sticks onto the freezer with magnets, but also has a fold-out hanger with keyholes for screwing it to the wall, if desired. The remotes easily clip onto the hanging baskets inside the freezers, but they also have suction cups, if you prefer. ( However, I've never trusted suction cups to remain secure. )
All in all a very good purchase that I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.
UPDATE: Aug 2017 - they went on sale (half price) so I got another set for my frig/freezer in the kitchen. :D
UPDATE: Nov 2022 - they continue to work, with no problems. VERY happy. :)
I have a double door refrigertaor and a deep freezer.
Makes me feel safe to be able to monitor the temperature in both.
I actually turned down the freezing control to lowest setting in my deep freezer, when I realised that temperature was always showing as lower than -18 celsius. Also helped me realise that freezer in my samsung double door has very wide variation between -5 to -18 on daily basis. Made me realise that it would the reason why ice cream are kind of soft , in the freezer of my double door, compared to deep freezer.
I guess that is the reason consumer product companies, don't put temperature displays on the common refrigerator.
