    I see a lot of reviews here saying "i don't play the flute but it looks nice and the person i bought it for who also doesn't play likes it, so its great!" I do play the flute. I played for 5 years, then unfortunately had to sell my flute due to life. I was looking for a cheap flute to get me started again.

    First things first, this is a student flute. They're made with cheaper parts and lower quality, and therefore have a lower price, but it comes at the cost of sound quality. Some student flutes sound better than others, but you'll never find a high what student flute. Want high quality? Pay for a professional flute. That said, for being a student flute, this flute has great sound.

    Secondly, and more irritatingly, it cane damaged. Several keys were bent, 2 pads needed replaced, and one of the rods was bent. I spent 80$ fixing it before i ever played it.

    Overall, I like this flute a lot, though ill probably end up replacing it with an intermediate closed-hold flute in the near future because I find myself missing mine greatly.

    My 8 year old grandson decided he wanted to play the flute, and I offered to buy him one (he is not touching my Haynes or Powell instruments). This flute was inexpensive, and, surprisingly, has a split E mechanism, which makes the high E, normally the most difficult note on a flute, VERY much easier to play. Just adding that mechanism to the order for a new flute cost over $600 on a Powell, the last time I looked. It's probably more now. When the flute got here, one of the keys was sticking closed. It looked like a problem with rough finishing of the ends of the rods on which the keys are mounted, so I took it apart and smoothed the ends of the rods. The keys work fine now.

    The flute is light-weight, which is important for a child, and it plays very easily in all three octaves, which is also important. The sound is fine. It doesn't measure up to a Powell, but it costs more than 100 times less. For a beginner, who might not stick with the instrument, that's an important consideration. If he sticks with it, and becomes good enough, I'll give him one of my good flutes when he is 18 or so.

    Anyone buying a flute should be aware that they have to be serviced periodically. In my case that's roughly every two years. Service will cost more than the purchase price of this flute. A complete overhaul for a Haynes or Powell is currently about $1200, but the cost for a beginner's instrument is a lot less. My instruments go to Sherrie Lee in Grand Junction, CO, but there are many other good repair shops, all over the country. I had very bad luck the two times I took an instrument to a local music shore for repair. Find a good flute specialist and send it there; playing on a poorly adjusted instrument is difficult and very discouraging.

As a result of that experience, despite Guitar Center's best efforts, I went with this flute for the next kid in line for school lessons. It again seems to be perfect for at least a beginner. I helped unpack and assemble it. It seemed quite sturdy, and from what I gather it plays as expected.

    I learned flute 4 years ago and haven't ever had one of my own. I bought this one so I could just mess around on it. Some of the higher notes from a high G and up are not very clear if you can produce a sound at all. I don't use those notes very often and I'm not performing so I like it. It is a really good student flute.

    Ok, bought this thing in September 2012. By December, my child complained about his flute not working properly. The 4th pad from the end of the flute does not close all the way. The reason I am angry about this is that this is the 2nd flute I purchased (Hisonic) and BOTH of them have the same failure. We sent the flute out for repair only to have the repair shop (who specializes in flutes) refuse to work on it. Their reasoning was that no parts or support are available. We ended up buying a used name brand flute at a pawn store for $70 cash. BEWARE ALL!
